    Diversity, Dilemmas and Transformation in Post-Compulsory Education: an Introduction to the Special Issue on Work Based Research

    As governments recognize the central place of post-compulsory education in regenerating and modernizing the economic and social fabric of society (BIS 2008), it is appropriate for us as educational researchers to question whether this recognition beckons a different role for research in post-compulsory education. Much of this research is work based, using a broad interpretation of this term, and the majority of articles received by this journal (though the proportion published is a lower one) reflect this balance. Work based research in education poses particular challenges for the researcher and the practitioner, whether the focus is practitioner research, in which case the dilemmas can centre on potential role conflict between practitioner and researcher roles, or whether the work based research is observational – analyzing others’ professional practice, in which case the dilemmas can centre on power relations between researcher and researched, the politics of research, and ethical questions around care for participants and the degree of their involvement or non-involvement in the total research enterprise. This article reviews the prospects for work based research in post-compulsory education and introduces the articles in this special issue

    Mean curvature flow with triple junctions in higher space dimensions

    We consider mean curvature flow of n-dimensional surface clusters. At (n-1)-dimensional triple junctions an angle condition is required which in the symmetric case reduces to the well-known 120 degree angle condition. Using a novel parametrization of evolving surface clusters and a new existence and regularity approach for parabolic equations on surface clusters we show local well-posedness by a contraction argument in parabolic Hoelder spaces.Comment: 31 pages, 2 figure

    Edge magnetization and spin transport in an SU(2)-symmetric Kitaev spin liquid

Rev. Lett. 107, 087205 (2011)] on the honeycomb lattice. In this model, the spin degrees of freedom fractionalize into a Z(2) static gauge field and three species of either gapless (Dirac) or gapped (chiral) Majorana fermionic excitations. We find that, when a magnetic field is applied on a zigzag edge, the Dirac KSL exhibits a nonlocal magnetization associated with the existence of zero-energy edge modes. The application of a spin bias V = mu(up arrow) - mu(down arrow) y at the interface of the spin system with a normal metal produces a spin current into the KSL, which depends as a power law on V, in the zero-temperature limit, for both Dirac and chiral KSLs, but with different exponents. Lastly, we study the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect, in which a spin current is driven by the combined action of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the honeycomb lattice and a thermal gradient at the interface of the KSL with a metal.     Extraction of high value triterpenic acids from eucalyptus globulus biomass using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents

    Triterpenic acids (TTAs), known for their promising biological properties, can be found in different biomass sources and related by-products, such as Eucalyptus globulus bark, and have been extracted using organic volatile solvents such as dichloromethane. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been identified as promising alternatives for the extraction of value-added compounds from biomass. In the present work, several hydrophobic DES were tested for the extraction of TTAs from E. globulus bark. Initial solubility studies revealed that DES based on menthol and thymol as the most promising solvents for these compounds given the highest solubilities obtained for ursolic acid (UA) at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 90 °C. Accordingly, an eutectic mixture of menthol:thymol (1:2) was confirmed as the best candidate for the TTAs extraction from E. globulus outer bark, leading to extraction yields (weight of TTA per weight of biomass) at room temperature of 1.8 wt% for ursolic acid, 0.84 wt% for oleanolic acid and 0.30 wt% for betulinic acid. These values are significantly higher than those obtained with conventional organic solvents under similar conditions. The results obtained using these DES are promising for the recovery of TTAs for nutraceutical and pharmacological applications, while reinforcing the potential of DES as promising solvents to be applied in biorefinery processes.publishe

    Quark-hadron phase transition in a neutron star under strong magnetic fields

    We study the effect of a strong magnetic field on the properties of neutron stars with a quark-hadron phase transition. It is shown that the magnetic field prevents the appearance of a quark phase, enhances the leptonic fraction, decreases the baryonic density extension of the mixed phase and stiffens the total equation of state, including both the stellar matter and the magnetic field contributions. Two parametrisations of a density dependent static magnetic field, increasing, respectively, fast and slowly with the density and reaching 24×10182-4\times 10^{18}G in the center of the star, are considered. The compact stars with strong magnetic fields have maximum mass configurations with larger masses and radius and smaller quark fractions. The parametrisation of the magnetic field with density has a strong influence on the star properties.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in J. Phys.

    Pulsars in Globular Clusters with the SKA

    Globular clusters are highly efficient radio pulsar factories. These pulsars can be used as precision probes of the clusters' structure, gas content, magnetic field, and formation history; some of them are also highly interesting in their own right because they probe exotic stellar evolution scenarios as well as the physics of dense matter, accretion, and gravity. Deep searches with SKA1-MID and SKA1-LOW will plausibly double to triple the known population. Such searches will only require one to a few tied-array beams, and can be done during early commissioning of the telescope - before an all-sky pulsar survey using hundreds to thousands of tied-array beams is feasible. With SKA2 it will be possible to observe most of the active radio pulsars within a large fraction of the Galactic globular clusters, an estimated population of 600 - 3700 observable pulsars (those beamed towards us). This rivals the total population of millisecond pulsars that can be found in the Galactic field; fully characterizing it will provide the best-possible physical laboratories as well as a rich dynamical history of the Galactic globular cluster system.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, to be published in: "Advancing Astrophysics with the Square Kilometre Array", Proceedings of Science, PoS(AASKA14)04

    Semiclassical dynamics of domain walls in the one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet in a transverse field

    We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of domain walls in a spin chain with ferromagnetic Ising interaction and subject to an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy magnetization axis (transverse field Ising model). The analytical results obtained within the continuum approximation and numerical simulations performed for discrete classical model are used to analyze the quantum properties of domain walls using the semiclassical approximation. We show that the domain wall spectrum shows a band structure consisting of 2SS non-intersecting zones.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
