Crystallization of jarosite in the presence of amino acids

    Get PDF
Jarosite was formed in the presence of five amino acids at two pHs, namely 1.75 and 2.9, to determine what impact amino acids have on its formation. It was found that at the lower pH glycine was the most potent in terms of morphological and yield impacts. XRD analysis showed that incorporation of the amino acid occurs at this low pH for glycine and proline. Dynamic light scattering studies showed that glycine impacts significantly on the jarosite nucleation rate while proline and alanine do not. At the higher pH all of the amino acids had much less impact on morphology or yield. At pH 3 the solids were found to be a 3-phase system consisting of goethite, schwertmannite and jarosite. In this case, alanine appeared to stabilise the presence of schwertmannite more than the other amino acids

The functional rehabilitation of the patient is one of the basic requirements in the treatment post-CVA. In this context, the objective of the present study is to examine how certain circumstantial, sociodemographic, familiar and clinical variables, the family functionality and functional independence are associated with the quality of life of these patients. Methods: it was made a cross-sectional, descriptive correlacional, quantitative study, in which participated 75 patients, mostly male (53,33%), with a mean age of 68 years old. For the measurement of the variables, were used measuring instruments of acknowledged reliability, measured and validated to the portuguese population: the Familiar Apgar Scale, the Barthel Scale and the Quality of Life Assessment Questionnaire. It was also used a sociodemographic and clinical data sheet. Results: Analyzing the dimensions of quality of life it was found that female patients have higher scores in all dimensions, and there are significant statistical differences only to Social Isolation. Unmarried participants showed higher average values, resulting in significant statistically differences to Social Isolation. The total and severely dependents participants were those who revealed higher average values in most dimensions, with differing slightly significant statistics, very significant and extremely significant in most dimensions, except in Pain. The variables age, influence of residence, qualifications, employment, housing conditions, type of cerebrovascular accident, time of hospitalization, location of the lesion, influence of rehabilitation programme and family functionality did not show a significant effect on the quality of life. Conclusion: The evidence found in this study provide indicators for a better assistance to patients with cerebrovascular accident, in order to improve their well-being and adjustment, and of his family, contributing to their quality of life. On the other hand, moved us to the importance in adjusting the specific rehabilitation cares of these patients’ expectations and needs. AGN counts at 15um. XMM observations of the ELAIS-S1-5 sample

Context: The counts of galaxies and AGN in the mid infra-red (MIR) bands are important instruments for studying their cosmological evolution. However, the classic spectral line ratios techniques can become misleading when trying to properly separate AGN from starbursts or even from apparently normal galaxies. Aims: We use X-ray band observations to discriminate AGN activity in previously classified MIR-selected starburst galaxies and to derive updated AGN1 and (Compton thin) AGN2 counts at 15 um. Methods: XMM observations of the ELAIS-S1 15um sample down to flux limits ~2x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (2-10 keV band) were used. We classified as AGN all those MIR sources with a unabsorbed 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity higher that ~10^42 erg/s. Results: We find that at least about 13(+/-6) per cent of the previously classified starburst galaxies harbor an AGN. According to these figures, we provide an updated estimate of the counts of AGN1 and (Compton thin) AGN2 at 15 um. It turns out that at least 24% of the extragalactic sources brighter than 0.6 my at 15 um are AGN (~13% contribution to the extragalactic background produced at fluxes brighter than 0.6 mJy).Comment: Accepted for publication on A&

Optical archival spectra of blazar candidates of uncertain type in the 3rd^{rd} Fermi Large Area Telescope Catalog

Despite the fact that blazars constitute the rarest class among active galactic nuclei (AGNs) they are the largest known population of associated γ\gamma-ray sources. Many of the γ\gamma-ray objects listed in the Fermi-Large Area Telescope Third Source catalog (3FGL) are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCUs), either because they show multifrequency behaviour similar to blazars but lacking optical spectra in the literature, or because the quality of such spectra is too low to confirm their nature. Here we select, out of 585 BCUs in the 3FGL, 42 BCUs which we identify as probable blazars by their WISE infrared colors and which also have optical spectra that are available in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and/or Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey Database (6dFGS). We confirm the blazar nature of all of the sources. We furthermore conclude that 28 of them are BL Lacs, 8 are radio-loud quasars with flat radio spectrum and 6 are BL Lac whose emission is dominated by their host galaxy
