    Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Prophet & Martyr

    Get PDF
The decade of the 1920’s for the German people was marked by political, social, and economic turmoil. This trend continued with the rise of Adolph Hitler and his Nazi party to power in Germany. It is with this turmoil in mind that Dietrich Bonhoeffer lived. Most of his adult life would be spent fighting against Hitler and his Nazi party. Seeing the church in his day being hijacked by Hitler and his Nazi party led Bonhoeffer to the belief that a radical break with society similar to the fiery preaching of John the Baptist and John of Patmos would prevent the church from becoming a mere play thing in the hands of secular leaders. True to his Lutheran roots, Bonhoeffer sees the church’s complete separation from the secular government as a way to return to an apostolic model of the church. Through his writings Bonhoeffer sounded the prophet’s call as he criticized the current status quo and to energized the people for a new future. His convictions ran so deep that he endured what many consider to be a martyr’s death

    Saint Basil: Monastic Reformer

Ascetical practices and theological disputes, in particular the Christological controversy initiated by the teaching of Arius, came to divide the ascetic groups of Asia Minor from the orthodox institutional church during the fourth century. Witnessing and experiencing the ascetical conflicts and theological divisions within the church was distressing for St. Basil. In the course of time, Basil would offer himself as an example of harmonizing the ascetic life with an orthodox union with the church. In order to demonstrate Basil as such a worthy example, I will show how Basil domesticated the ascetical currents of his locality by providing a Scriptural foundation for the ascetical life and encouraging ascetics to live in communities separated from the world. The use of Scripture gave Basil a universal alphabet in which to base his teaching. At the same time, separation from the world would lend itself to having a settled mind, the fruit of which would be pure prayer

A Machine-Synesthetic Approach To DDoS Network Attack Detection

In the authors' opinion, anomaly detection systems, or ADS, seem to be the most perspective direction in the subject of attack detection, because these systems can detect, among others, the unknown (zero-day) attacks. To detect anomalies, the authors propose to use machine synesthesia. In this case, machine synesthesia is understood as an interface that allows using image classification algorithms in the problem of detecting network anomalies, making it possible to use non-specialized image detection methods that have recently been widely and actively developed. The proposed approach is that the network traffic data is "projected" into the image. It can be seen from the experimental results that the proposed method for detecting anomalies shows high results in the detection of attacks. On a large sample, the value of the complex efficiency indicator reaches 97%.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 5 tables. Accepted to the Intelligent Systems Conference (IntelliSys) 201

A Balancing Act - Reflections on 37 Years at Regis University: An Interview with Fr. Michael J. Sheeran, S.J., President, Regis University

Father Michael Sheeran, S.J., who became the 23rd president of Regis University on January 1, 1993, will officially retire from this appointment May 31, 2012. Father Sheeran arrived at Regis University in 1975 as assistant professor of history and political science and director of Student Academic Services. He was named academic dean of Regis College in 1977 and in 1982 became academic vice president. Every facet of his tenure as Regis University President underscores and supports a deep belief that the role of a Jesuit, Catholic university is to serve as a catalyst to further the common good of the community at large. Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal (JHE) asked Father Sheeran to reflect on his accomplishments as well as the future of Regis University

    O'NAN MOONSHINE AND ARITHMETIC

Answering a question posed by Conway and Norton in their seminal 1979 paper on moonshine, we prove the existence of a graded infinite-dimensional module for the sporadic simple group of O'Nan, for which the McKay--Thompson series are weight 3/23/2 modular forms. The coefficients of these series may be expressed in terms of class numbers, traces of singular moduli, and central critical values of quadratic twists of weight 2 modular LL-functions. As a consequence, for primes pp dividing the order of the O'Nan group we obtain congruences between O'Nan group character values and class numbers, pp-parts of Selmer groups, and Tate--Shafarevich groups of certain elliptic curves. This work represents the first example of moonshine involving arithmetic invariants of this type

An Early Ethiopic Manuscript Fragment (Twelfth–Thirteenth Century) from the Monastery of St Antony (Egypt)

This article presents a single fragmentary folio that was recently uncovered in excavations at the Monastery of St Antony (Egypt). This folio was discovered in a secondary deposit below the foundations of a church which was in all likelihood constructed in the 1230s. A radiocarbon dating of the folio has returned a date of 1160–1265. Together, these two data make this fragmentary folio the earliest securely datable specimen of an Ethiopic manuscript. This find, thus, provides a new foundation for the analysis of the paleography of the earliest Ethiopic manuscripts, including the gospel manuscripts from Ǝnda Abba Gärima, which contain paleographic features that seem to predate this fragmentary folio. In addition, this find has implications for the regnant periodization of Ethiopic literature and more specifically the history of Ethiopic monastic literature, especially the Zena Abäw. Finally, this folio is among the earliest surviving Aethiopica for the entirety of Egypt and thus provides new information on the relationship between Ethiopic and Coptic Christianity

New Bounds for State Transition Matrices

    Get PDF
International audienceWe address the problem of constructing matrix-valued interval observers for estimating state transition matrices for time-varying systems. We provide less conservative estimators than those in recent literature. We cover continuous-and discrete-time linear systems, under Metzler or nonnegativity conditions on the coefficient matrices. We show how to satisfy our Metzler conditions after simple changes of coordinates. We illustrate our method using a feedback stabilized underwater marine robotic dynamics with unknown control gains

Mr. Michael Conaton has had a long and remarkable association with Xavier University. In this interview, the 1955 Xavier graduate talks about his early days at home and his years at Xavier both as a student and as a football team member. He discusses his personal, family life. Mr. Conaton recounts his professional career spent chiefly at Midland Company where he served as president and vice chairman prior to his retirement. He tells of his long-time participation on the Xavier Board of Trustees over which he was the Chairman for eighteen years. The Interim President of Xavier University during the 1990-91 Academic Year, he reflects on that experience which included his work in the search committee that hired Fr. James Hoff as the next university president. This interview provides an insight into the organizational changes and development of the Xavier Board of Trustees including some important issues handled by the Board. He provides character sketches of various Xavier personalities, including Fr. Paul L. O’Connor, S.J. (Xavier President, 1955-1972), Fr. James E. Hoff, S.J.(Xavier President, 1991-2000) and Mr. John Gilligan (former Xavier English professor and later the Governor of the State of Ohio). Extolling the academic and moral qualities imparted by his Jesuit education Mr. Conaton offers his life’s mission statement: “To be a person for others who doesn’t give in to himself.
