    The Italian Version of the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index IV:Psychometric Properties, Clinical Usefulness, and Possible Diagnostic Implications

    Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has a core embodied in affective and behavioral dysregulations, impulsivity, and relational disturbance. Clinical presentation might be heterogeneous due to a combination of different symptoms listed in the DSM-5. Clinical diagnosis and assessment of the severity of manifestations might be improved through the administration of structured interviews such as the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index, 4th edition (BPDSI-IV). The psychometric properties of the Italian version of the BPDSI-IV were examined for the first time in 248 patients affected by BPD and 113 patients affected by bipolar disorder, proving to be a valid and accurate instrument with good internal consistency and high accuracy. The Italian version also demonstrates significant validity in the discrimination between these clinical groups (p < .001)

    Social marketing and healthy eating : Findings from young people in Greece

This research provides lessons for social marketing to tackle the severe nutrition-related problems in this country by obtaining insight into the eating behaviour of young adults aged 18–23. Also, the main behavioural theories used to inform the research are critically discussed. The research was conducted in Athens. Nine focus groups with young adults from eight educational institutions were conducted and fifty-nine participants’ views towards eating habits, healthy eating and the factors that affect their food choices were explored. The study found that the participants adopted unhealthier nutritional habits after enrolment. Motivations for healthy eating were good health, appearance and psychological consequences, while barriers included lack of time, fast-food availability and taste, peer pressure, lack of knowledge and lack of family support. Participants reported lack of supportive environments when deciding on food choices.     Carbon nanostructures derived through hypergolic reaction of conductive polymers with fuming nitric acid at ambient conditions

    Hypergolic systems rely on organic fuel and a powerful oxidizer that spontaneously ignites upon contact without any external ignition source. Although their main utilization pertains to rocket fuels and propellants, it is only recently that hypergolics has been established from our group as a new general method for the synthesis of different morphologies of carbon nanostructures depending on the hypergolic pair (organic fuel-oxidizer). In search of new pairs, the hypergolic mixture described here contains polyaniline as the organic source of carbon and fuming nitric acid as strong oxidizer. Specifically, the two reagents react rapidly and spontaneously upon contact at ambient conditions to afford carbon nanosheets. Further liquid-phase exfoliation of the nanosheets in dimethylformamide results in dispersed single layers exhibiting strong Tyndall effect. The method can be extended to other conductive polymers, such as polythiophene and polypyrrole, leading to the formation of different type carbon nanostructures (e.g., photolumincent carbon dots). Apart from being a new synthesis pathway towards carbon nanomaterials and a new type of reaction for conductive polymers, the present hypergolic pairs also provide a novel set of rocket bipropellants based on conductive polymers.Web of Science266art. no. 159

    Gastrointestinal Hyperplasia with Altered Expression of DNA Polymerase β

    Background: Altered expression of DNA polymerase β (Pol β) has been documented in a large percentage of human tumors. However, tumor prevalence or predisposition resulting from Pol β over-expression has not yet been evaluated in a mouse model. Methodology/Principal Findings: We have recently developed a novel transgenic mouse model that over-expresses Pol β. These mice present with an elevated incidence of spontaneous histologic lesions, including cataracts, hyperplasia of Brunner's gland and mucosal hyperplasia in the duodenum. In addition, osteogenic tumors in mice tails, such as osteoma and osteosarcoma were detected. This is the first report of elevated tumor incidence in a mouse model of Pol β over-expression. These findings prompted an evaluation of human gastrointestinal tumors with regard to Pol β expression. We observed elevated expression of Pol β in stomach adenomas and thyroid follicular carcinomas, but reduced Pol β expression in esophageal adenocarcinomas and squamous carcinomas. Conclusions/Significance: These data support the hypothesis that balanced and proficient base excision repair protein expression and base excision repair capacity is required for genome stability and protection from hyperplasia and tumor formation

    Effect of vacuum packaging on lipid oxidation of eel ( Anguilla anguilla) flesh during refrigerated storage

    Recent trends towards extending the shelf-life of fresh eel during refrigerated storage have rendered the control of lipid oxidation increasingly important. Eel fat is very sensitive to oxidative deterioration because of its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids. To delay or minimise oxidative deterioration of fresheel fat during refrigerated storage, the use of vacuum packaging was investigated. Lipid oxidation was assessed by monitoring malonaldehyde (MDA) formation in wild (n=10) and farmed (n=10) eel flesh samples at 0, 1, 2, 5 and 8 days of refrigerated storage in atmospheric air or under vacuum packaging, using a selective third-order derivative spectrophotometric method. The results clearly demonstrated the oxidative stability of vacuum packed eelflesh following storage for 8 days at 3±1oC and the significant oxidation of the atmospheric air stored eel flesh even after 1 day of refrigerated storage
