Energy Spread of the Unstable State and Proton Decay Observation
Because of the extreme smallness of the energy spread of the unstable state
describing the decaying proton, due in its turn to the anomalous smallness of
the resonance width expected for the proton decay, the application of the
Heisenberg time-energy relation predicts the measurement times for the proton
decay observation to be so long as to forbid a "continuous" observation of the
decay. This might account for the missing observation of the proton decay
Best Practices in Consent Education: An Analysis
The need for sexual assault prevention work on college campuses is
largely accepted; however, higher education and student affairs professionals
continue to debate the best way to do this work. In this analysis,
I explore sex-neutral, sex-positive, and punitive foci for sexual assault
prevention and consent education. After analyzing the effectiveness of
each of these foci, I suggest that sexual assault prevention and consent
education on college campuses cannot be limited to only reactive strategies.
I provide examples of tactics that different functional areas can utilize
as well as examples from my own work in student affairs. Expanding
the focus of sexual assault prevention and consent education will
require student affairs professionals across functional areas to take on
more responsibility for this important work. I conclude by advocating
for the creation of a specific personnel position to oversee sexual assault
prevention and consent on campus
The Space They Take: Evaluating Historically White Fraternities through Critical Race Theory
Fraternities and sororities are not often thought of as the starting points for social justice education, especially not historically White fraternities and sororities. In this paper, I outline the missions and values of a select group of historically White fraternities to better understand the foundation from which they are starting their organization. I give an overview of Critical Race Theory (CRT) that gives context for how critical race theory can work in higher education. I conclude with recommendations for reworking historically White fraternities with a CRT lens; recommendations are written for national organizations and students, and then for professional staff working with fraternities and sororities, especially historically White fraternities

On the Shape of Things: From holography to elastica
We explore the question of which shape a manifold is compelled to take when
immersed in another one, provided it must be the extremum of some functional.
We consider a family of functionals which depend quadratically on the extrinsic
curvatures and on projections of the ambient curvatures. These functionals
capture a number of physical setups ranging from holography to the study of
membranes and elastica. We present a detailed derivation of the equations of
motion, known as the shape equations, placing particular emphasis on the issue
of gauge freedom in the choice of normal frame. We apply these equations to the
particular case of holographic entanglement entropy for higher curvature three
dimensional gravity and find new classes of entangling curves. In particular,
we discuss the case of New Massive Gravity where we show that non-geodesic
entangling curves have always a smaller on-shell value of the entropy
functional. Then we apply this formalism to the computation of the entanglement
entropy for dual logarithmic CFTs. Nevertheless, the correct value for the
entanglement entropy is provided by geodesics. Then, we discuss the importance
of these equations in the context of classical elastica and comment on terms
that break gauge invariance.Comment: 54 pages, 8 figures. Significantly improved version, accepted for

Spinning probes and helices in AdS
We study extremal curves associated with a functional which is linear in the
curve's torsion. The functional in question is known to capture the properties
of entanglement entropy for two-dimensional conformal field theories with
chiral anomalies and has potential applications in elucidating the equilibrium
shape of elastic linear structures. We derive the equations that determine the
shape of its extremal curves in general ambient spaces in terms of geometric
quantities. We show that the solutions to these shape equations correspond to a
three-dimensional version of Mathisson's helical motions for the centers of
mass of spinning probes. Thereafter, we focus on the case of maximally
symmetric spaces, where solutions correspond to cylindrical helices and find
that the Lancret ratio of these equals the relative speed between the
Mathisson-Pirani and the Tulczyjew-Dixon observers. Finally, we construct all
possible helical motions in three-dimensional manifolds with constant negative
curvature. In particular, we discover a rich space of helices in AdS which
we explore in detail.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figure
Periodic solutions of nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems bifurcating from infinite-dimensional tori
We prove the existence of periodic solutions of some infinite-dimensional nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems, bifurcating from infinite-dimensional tori, by the use of a generalization of the PoincareÌâBirkhoff Theorem
The computational complexity of traditional Lattice-Boltzmann methods for incompressible fluids
It is well-known that in fluid dynamics an alternative to customary direct
solution methods (based on the discretization of the fluid fields) is provided
by so-called \emph{particle simulation methods}. Particle simulation methods
rely typically on appropriate \emph{kinetic models} for the fluid equations
which permit the evaluation of the fluid fields in terms of suitable
expectation values (or \emph{momenta}) of the kinetic distribution function
being respectively and\textbf{\}
the position an velocity of a test particle with probability density
. These kinetic models can be continuous or discrete in
phase space, yielding respectively \emph{continuous} or \emph{discrete kinetic
models} for the fluids. However, also particle simulation methods may be biased
by an undesirable computational complexity. In particular, a fundamental issue
is to estimate the algorithmic complexity of numerical simulations based on
traditional LBM's (Lattice-Boltzmann methods; for review see Succi, 2001
\cite{Succi}). These methods, based on a discrete kinetic approach, represent
currently an interesting alternative to direct solution methods. Here we intend
to prove that for incompressible fluids fluids LBM's may present a high
complexity. The goal of the investigation is to present a detailed account of
the origin of the various complexity sources appearing in customary LBM's. The
result is relevant to establish possible strategies for improving the numerical
efficiency of existing numerical methods.Comment: Contributed paper at RGD26 (Kyoto, Japan, July 2008
