The role of diffusion on the interface thickness in a ventilated filling box
We examine the role of diffusivity, whether molecular or turbulent, on the steady-state stratification in a ventilated filling box. The buoyancy-driven displacement ventilation model of Linden et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 212, 1990, p. 309) predicts the formation of a two-layer stratification when a single plume is introduced into an enclosure with vents at the top and bottom. The model assumes that diffusion plays no role in the development of the ambient buoyancy stratification: diffusion is a slow process and the entrainment of ambient fluid into the plume from the diffuse interface will act to thin the interface resulting in a near discontinuity of density between the upper and lower layers. This prediction has been corroborated by small-scale salt bath experiments; however, full-scale measurements in ventilated rooms and complementary numerical simulations suggest an interface that is not sharp but rather smeared out over a finite thickness. For a given plume buoyancy flux, as the cross-sectional area of the enclosure increases the volume of fluid that must be entrained by the plume to maintain a sharp interface also increases. Therefore the balance between the diffusive thickening of the interface and plume-driven thinning favours a thicker interface. Conversely, the interface thickness decreases with increasing source buoyancy flux, although the dependence is relatively weak. Our analysis presents two models for predicting the interface thickness as a function of the enclosure height, base area, composite vent area, plume buoyancy flux and buoyancy diffusivity. Model results are compared with interface thickness measurements based on previously reported data.

fisherfolk. Large numbers suffer from this water-borne parasitic disease; notably along the shores of lakes Albert and Victoria and along the River Nile. Since 2004, a policy has been adopted of providing drugs, free of charge, to all those at risk. The strategy has been reported to be successful, but closer investigation reveals serious problems. This paper draws upon long-term research undertaken at three locations in northwestern and southeastern Uganda. It highlights consequences of not engaging with the day to day realities of fisherfolk
livelihoods; attributable, in part, to the fact that so many fisherfolk live and work in places located at the country’s international borders, and to a related
tendency to treat them as "feckless" and "ungovernable". Endeavours to roll out
treatment end up being haphazard, erratic and location-specific. In some places,
concerted efforts have been made to treat fisherfolk; but there is no effective
monitoring, and it is difficult to gauge what proportion have actually swallowed
the tablets. In other places, fisherfolk are, in practice, largely ignored, or are
actively harassed in ways that make treatment almost impossible. Extending Elliptic Curve Chabauty to higher genus curves
We give a generalization of the method of "Elliptic Curve Chabauty" to higher
genus curves and their Jacobians. This method can sometimes be used in
conjunction with covering techniques and a modified version of the Mordell-Weil
sieve to provide a complete solution to the problem of determining the set of

Simple and accurate modelling of the gravitational potential produced by thick and thin exponential discs
We present accurate models of the gravitational potential produced by a radially exponential disc mass distribution. The models are produced by combining three separate Miyamoto–Nagai discs. Such models have been used previously to model the disc of the Milky Way, but here we extend this framework to allow its application to discs of any mass, scalelength, and a wide range of thickness from infinitely thin to near spherical (ellipticities from 0 to 0.9). The models have the advantage of simplicity of implementation, and we expect faster run speeds over a double exponential disc treatment. The potentials are fully analytical, and differentiable at all points. The mass distribution of our models deviates from the radial mass distribution of a pure exponential disc by <0.4 per cent out to 4 disc scalelengths, and <1.9 per cent out to 10 disc scalelengths. We tabulate fitting parameters which facilitate construction of exponential discs for any scalelength, and a wide range of disc thickness (a user-friendly, web-based interface is also available). Our recipe is well suited for numerical modelling of the tidal effects of a giant disc galaxy on star clusters or dwarf galaxies. decays and twisted boundary conditions
We propose a new method to evaluate the Lellouch-L\"uscher factor which
relates the matrix elements computed on a finite
lattice to the physical (infinite-volume) decay amplitudes. The method relies
on the use of partially twisted boundary conditions, which allow the s-wave
phase shift to be computed as an almost continuous function of the
centre-of-mass relative momentum and hence for its derivative to be evaluated.
We successfully demonstrate the feasibility of the technique in an exploratory

dRail: a novel physical layout methodology for power gated circuits
In this paper we present a physical layout methodology, called dRail, to allow power gated and non-power gated cells to be placed next to each other. This is unlike traditional voltage area layout which separates cells to prevent shorting of power supplies leading to impact on area, routing and power. To implement dRail, a modified standard cell architecture and physical layout is proposed. The methodology is validated by implementing power gating on the data engine in an ARM Cortex-A5 processor using a 65nm library, and shows up to 38% reduction in area cost when compared to traditional voltage area layou
Heavy Baryons in a Quark Model
A quark model is applied to the spectrum of baryons containing heavy quarks.
The model gives masses for the known heavy baryons that are in agreement with
experiment, but for the doubly-charmed baryon Cascade_{cc}, the model
prediction is too heavy. Mixing between the Cascade_Q and Cascade_Q^\prime
states is examined and is found to be small for the lowest lying states. In
contrast with this, mixing between the Cascade_{bc} and Cascade_{bc}^\prime
states is found to be large, and the implication of this mixing for properties
of these states is briefly discussed. We also examine heavy-quark spin-symmetry
multiplets, and find that many states in the model can be placed in such

The effect of the visual exercise environment on the response to psychological stress: a pilot study
Background: Performing physical activity whilst exposed to nature can improve health. However, there is little evidence of its impact on stress outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the visual exercise environment on the response to a psychosocial stressor. Methods: Eighteen participants were randomised to one of three conditions: i. control; ii. Nature or; iii. Built condition. Participants exercised for 30min on a treadmill at 50% of their VO2max whilst viewing a video of either a natural or built environment or a blank screen. Following the exercise, participants completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), a standardised laboratory stressor. Salivary samples were collected before, during and after the TSST to calculate cortisol reactivity and recovery. Results: One-way ANOVA revealed a significant effect of viewing condition on cortisol reactivity [F (2, 11) = 4.686, p = .034; n2p= .460]; with significantly lower reactivity in the built compared to the nature condition (p = .027, d=1.73). There was no effect of condition on cortisol recovery (P>0.05; n2p= .257). Conclusions: In the context of the adverse health impact of lower (i.e. blunted) cortisol responding, these findings could indicate a negative impact of the built environment on stress responses
Relativistic spin precession in the binary PSR J11416545
PSR J11416545 is a precessing binary pulsar that has the rare potential to
reveal the two-dimensional structure of a non-recycled pulsar emission cone. It
has undergone of relativistic spin precession in the
years since its discovery. In this paper, we present a detailed Bayesian
analysis of the precessional evolution of the width of the total intensity
profile, to understand the changes to the line-of-sight impact angle ()
of the pulsar using four different physically motivated prior distribution
models. Although we cannot statistically differentiate between the models with
confidence, the temporal evolution of the linear and circular polarisations
strongly argue that our line-of-sight crossed the magnetic pole around MJD
54000 and that only two models remain viable. For both these models, it appears
likely that the pulsar will precess out of our line-of-sight in the next
years, assuming a simple beam geometry. Marginalising over suggests
that the pulsar is a near-orthogonal rotator and provides the first
polarization-independent estimate of the scale factor () that
relates the pulsar beam opening angle () to its rotational period ()
as : we find it to be at 1.4
GHz with 99\% confidence. If all pulsars emit from opposite poles of a dipolar
magnetic field with comparable brightness, we might expect to see evidence of
an interpulse arising in PSR J11416545, unless the emission is patchy.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letter
