Comment on Higgs Inflation and Naturalness
We rebut the recent claim (arXiv:0912.5463) that Einstein-frame scattering in
the Higgs inflation model is unitary above the cut-off energy Lambda ~ Mp/xi.
We show explicitly how unitarity problems arise in both the Einstein and Jordan
frames of the theory. In a covariant gauge they arise from non-minimal Higgs
self-couplings, which cannot be removed by field redefinitions because the
target space is not flat. In unitary gauge, where there is only a single scalar
which can be redefined to achieve canonical kinetic terms, the unitarity
problems arise through non-minimal Higgs-gauge couplings.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure V3: Journal Versio

Nonminimal Couplings in the Early Universe: Multifield Models of Inflation and the Latest Observations
Models of cosmic inflation suggest that our universe underwent an early phase
of accelerated expansion, driven by the dynamics of one or more scalar fields.
Inflationary models make specific, quantitative predictions for several
observable quantities, including particular patterns of temperature anistropies
in the cosmic microwave background radiation. Realistic models of high-energy
physics include many scalar fields at high energies. Moreover, we may expect
these fields to have nonminimal couplings to the spacetime curvature. Such
couplings are quite generic, arising as renormalization counterterms when
quantizing scalar fields in curved spacetime. In this chapter I review recent
research on a general class of multifield inflationary models with nonminimal
couplings. Models in this class exhibit a strong attractor behavior: across a
wide range of couplings and initial conditions, the fields evolve along a
single-field trajectory for most of inflation. Across large regions of phase
space and parameter space, therefore, models in this general class yield robust
predictions for observable quantities that fall squarely within the "sweet
spot" of recent observations.Comment: 17pp, 2 figs. References added to match the published version.

On Inflation with Non-minimal Coupling
A simple realization of inflation consists of adding the following operators
to the Einstein-Hilbert action: (partial phi)^2, lambda phi^4, and xi phi^2 R,
with xi a large non-minimal coupling. Recently there has been much discussion
as to whether such theories make sense quantum mechanically and if the inflaton
phi can also be the Standard Model Higgs. In this note we answer these
questions. Firstly, for a single scalar phi, we show that the quantum field
theory is well behaved in the pure gravity and kinetic sectors, since the
quantum generated corrections are small. However, the theory likely breaks down
at ~ m_pl / xi due to scattering provided by the self-interacting potential
lambda phi^4. Secondly, we show that the theory changes for multiple scalars
phi with non-minimal coupling xi phi dot phi R, since this introduces
qualitatively new interactions which manifestly generate large quantum
corrections even in the gravity and kinetic sectors, spoiling the theory for
energies > m_pl / xi. Since the Higgs doublet of the Standard Model includes
the Higgs boson and 3 Goldstone bosons, it falls into the latter category and
therefore its validity is manifestly spoiled. We show that these conclusions
hold in both the Jordan and Einstein frames and describe an intuitive analogy
in the form of the pion Lagrangian. We also examine the recent claim that
curvature-squared inflation models fail quantum mechanically. Our work appears
to go beyond the recent discussions.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. Version 2: Clarified findings and improved

Design, Synthesis, and Anticancer Activity of a Selenium‐Containing Galectin‐3 and Galectin‐9N Inhibitor
Galectins are soluble β‐D‐galactoside‐binding proteins whose implication in cancer progression and disease outcome makes them prominent targets for therapeutic intervention. In this frame, the development of small inhibitors that block selectively the activity of galectins represents an important strategy for cancer therapy which is, however, still relatively underdeveloped. To this end, we designed here a rationally and efficiently novel diglycosylated compound, characterized by a selenoglycoside bond and the presence of a lipophilic benzyl group at both saccharide residues. The relatively high binding affinity of the new compound to the carbohydrate recognition domain of two galectins, galectin 3 and galectin 9, its good antiproliferative and anti‐migration activity towards melanoma cells, as well as its anti‐angiogenesis properties, pave the way for its further development as an anticancer agent

Rotor profile design and numerical analysis of 2–3 type multiphase twin-screw pumps
Increasing demands for high-performance handling of fluids in oil and gas as well as other applications require improvements of efficiency and reliability of screw pumps. Rotor profile plays the key role in the performance of such machines. This paper analyses difference in performance of 2–3 lobe combination of twin-screw pumps with different rotor profiles. A-type profile formed of involute–cycloid curves and D-type formed of cycloid curves are typical representatives for 2–3 type screw pumps. The investigation is performed by use of a full 3-D computational fluid dynamics analysis based on a single-domain structured moving mesh obtained by novel grid generation procedure. The real-time mass flow rate, rotor torque, pressure distribution and velocity field were obtained from 3D computational fluid dynamics calculations. The performance curves were produced for variable rotation speeds and variable discharge pressures. The computational fluid dynamics model was validated by comparing the simulation results of the A-type pump with the experimental data. In order to get the performance characteristics of D-type profile, two rotors with D-type profile were designed. The first has the same displacement volume as A-type while the second has the same lead and rotor length as A-type but different displacement volume. The comparison of results obtained with two rotor profiles gave an insight on the advantages and disadvantages of each of them
