    Headache in people with epilepsy

    Get PDF
Epidemiological estimates indicate that individuals with epilepsy are more likely to experience headaches, including migraine, than individuals without epilepsy. Headaches can be temporally unrelated to seizures, or can occur before, during or after an episode; seizures and migraine attacks are mostly not temporally linked. The pathophysiological links between headaches (including migraine) and epilepsy are complex and have not yet been fully elucidated. Correct diagnoses and appropriate treatment of headaches in individuals with epilepsy is essential, as headaches can contribute substantially to disease burden. Here, we review the insights that have been made into the associations between headache and epilepsy over the past 5 years, including information on the pathophysiological mechanisms and genetic variants that link the two disorders. We also discuss the current best practice for the management of headaches co-occurring with epilepsy and highlight future challenges for this area of research.Paroxysmal Cerebral Disorder

On the inner Double-Resonance Raman scattering process in bilayer graphene

The dispersion of phonons and the electronic structure of graphene systems can be obtained experimentally from the double-resonance (DR) Raman features by varying the excitation laser energy. In a previous resonance Raman investigation of graphene, the electronic structure was analyzed in the framework of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure (SWM) model, considering the outer DR process. In this work we analyze the data considering the inner DR process, and obtain SWM parameters that are in better agreement with those obtained from other experimental techniques. This result possibly shows that there is still a fundamental open question concerning the double resonance process in graphene systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Green manure in coffee systems in the region of Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais: characteristics and kinetics of carbon and nitrogen mineralization.

    Get PDF
The use of green manure may contribute to reduce soil erosion and increase the soil organic matter content and N availability in coffee plantations in the Zona da Mata, State of Minas Gerais, in Southeastern Brazil. The potential of four legumes (A. pintoi, C. mucunoides, S. aterrimum and S. guianensis)to produce above-ground biomass, accumulate nutrients and mineralize N was studied in two coffee plantations of subsistence farmers under different climate conditions. The biomass production of C. mucunoides was influenced by the shade of the coffee plantation.C. mucunoides tended to mineralize more N than the other legumes due to the low polyphenol content and polyphenol/N ratio. In the first year, the crop establishment of A. pintoi in the area took longer than of the other legumes, resulting in lower biomass production and N2 fixation. In the long term, cellulose was the main factor controlling N mineralization. The biochemical characteristics, nutrient accumulation and biomass production of the legumes were greatly influenced by the altitude and position of the area relative to the sun

We report the calculation of the interspecies scattering length for the sodium-rubidium (Na-Rb) system. We present improved hybrid potentials for the singlet X1Σ+X^1\Sigma^+ and triplet a3Σ+a^3\Sigma^+ ground states of the NaRb molecule, and calculate the singlet and triplet scattering lengths asa_{s} and ata_{t} for the isotopomers 23^{23}Na87^{87}Rb and 23^{23}Na85^{85}Rb. Using these values, we assess the prospects for producing a stable two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in the Na-Rb system.Comment: v2: report correct units in Table captions, fix error in conclusions for 23^{23}Na85^{85}Rb TBEC. Ratio between vena contracta width and tricuspid annular diameter: prognostic value in secondary tricuspid regurgitation

    Get PDF
Background: Conventional approaches for the assessment of secondary tricuspid regurgitation (STR) severity do not correct for right heart dimensions. The authors hypothesized that STR severity can be proportional or disproportional to the dilation of the tricuspid annulus (TA) and investigated the prognostic impact of this novel definition. Methods: A total of 334 patients with moderate to severe STR and preserved left ventricular systolic function were included. The ratio between vena contracta (VC) width and tricuspid annular diameter was calculated. The cutoff value for VC/TA ratio associated with increased risk for all-cause death was identified using spline-curve analysis. Results: The cutoff value of VC/TA ratio associated with a mortality excess was 0.24, and 165 patients (49%) had VC/TA ratios >_ 0.24. Compared with those with VC/TA ratios _ 0.24 had a higher prevalence of moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, had higher pulmonary pressures, and were more frequently treated with diuretics. During a median follow-up period of 62 months (interquartile range, 28-101 months), 128 patients (38%) died. The cumulative 5-year survival rate was significantly worse in patients with VC/TA ratios >_ 0.24 (55% vs 71%, P = .001). VC/TA ratio >_ 0.24 was independently associated with poor outcomes on multivariate analysis (hazard ratio, 1.567; 95% CI, 1.044-2.352; P = .030) together with coronary artery disease, renal impairment, right ventricular systolic function (evaluated using either tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion or right ventricular free wall strain), and pulmonary pressures. Conclusions: VC/TA ratio >_ 0.24 is independently associated with poor prognosis in patients with STR. This parameter may be considered as a marker of disproportionate STR and could improve risk stratification and clinical decision-making. (J Am Soc Echocardiogr 2021;34:944-54.)Cardiolog

Twist Deformations of the Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

The N-extended Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics is deformed via an abelian twist which preserves the super-Hopf algebra structure of its Universal Enveloping Superalgebra. Two constructions are possible. For even N one can identify the 1D N-extended superalgebra with the fermionic Heisenberg algebra. Alternatively, supersymmetry generators can be realized as operators belonging to the Universal Enveloping Superalgebra of one bosonic and several fermionic oscillators. The deformed system is described in terms of twisted operators satisfying twist-deformed (anti)commutators. The main differences between an abelian twist defined in terms of fermionic operators and an abelian twist defined in terms of bosonic operators are discussed.Comment: 18 pages; two references adde

Prognostic implications of a novel algorithm to grade secondary tricuspid regurgitation

OBJECTIVES A novel tricuspid regurgitation (TR) grading system, using vena contracta (VC) width and effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA), was proposed and validated based on its prognostic usefulness.BACKGROUND The clinical need of a new grading system for TR has recently been emphasized to depict the whole spectrum of TR severity, particularly beyond severe TR (massive or torrential).METHODS TR severity was characterized in 1,129 patients with moderate or severe secondary TR (STR). Recently proposed cutoff values of VC width were more effective in differentiating the prognosis of patients with moderate STR, whereas EROA cutoff values performed better in characterizing the risk of patients with more severe STR. Therefore, these 2 parameters were combined into a novel grading system to define moderate (VC = 7 mm and EROA = 7 mm and EROA >= 80 mm(2)) STR.RESULTS A total of 143 patients (13%) showed moderate STR, whereas 536 patients (47%) had severe STR, and 450 (40%) had torrential STR. Patients with torrential STR had larger right ventricular (RV) dimensions, lower RV systolic function, and were more likely to receive diuretics. The cumulative 10-year survival rate was 53% for moderate, 45% for severe, and 35% for torrential STR (p = 0.007). After adjusting for potential confounders, torrential STR retained an association with worse prognosis compared with other STR grades (hazard ratio: 1.245; 95% confidence interval: 1.023 to 1.516; p = 0.029).CONCLUSIONS A novel STR grading system was able to capture the whole range of STR severity and identified patients with torrential STR who were characterized by a worse prognosis. Left-right symmetry in 5D and neutrino mass in TeV scale gravity models

We construct a left-right symmetric model based on the gauge group SU(2)L×SU(2)R×U(1)BLSU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L} in five dimensions where both the gauge bosons and fermions reside in all five dimensions. The orbifold boundary conditions are used not only to break the gauge symmetry down to SU(2)L×U(1)Y×U(1)YSU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)_{Y'} but also to ``project'' the right handed neutrino out of the zero mode part of the spectrum, providing a new way to understand the small neutrino masses without adding (singlet) bulk neutrinos. This formulation of the left-right model has also two new features: (i) it avoids most existing phenomenological bounds on the scale of the right handed WRW_R boson allowing for the possibility that the right handed gauge bosons could have masses under a TeV, and (ii) it predicts a stable lepton with mass of order of the inverse radius of the fifth dimension.Comment: 20 pages; some new materials and references adde

Precise measurements of the eta and the neutral kaon meson masses with the KLOE detector

We present precise measurements of the eta and K0 masses using the processes phi to eta gamma, eta to gamma gamma and phi to Ks Kl, Ks to pi+ pi-. The K0 mass measurement, M_K=497.583 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.020 (syst) MeV, is in acceptable agreement with the previous measurements but is more accurate. We find m(eta) = 547.874 +/- 0.007 (stat) +/- 0.031 (syst) MeV. Our value is the most accurate to date and is in agreement with two recent measurements based on eta decays, but is inconsistent, by about 10 sigma, with a measurement of comparable precision based on eta production at threshold.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures Submitted to Physics Letters

Triticales (x Triticosecale Wittmack) y tricepiros (x Triticosecale Witt. Triticales (x Triticosecale Wittmack) and Tricepiros (x Triticosecale Witt. X x Agrotricum A. Camus) are improved in order to obtain dual-purpose cultivars (forage and grain). In order to use them for human consumption the quality of triticale four is frequently evaluated by measuring the diameter and spread factor of cookies. These indicators are strongly related to the contents of damaged starch, protein and non-starch polysaccharides of four, which determine its water absorption properties. During 2012, twenty-five experimental strains, eight triticale and one tricepiro cultivars were evaluated in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, Argentina by means of simple correlation and cluster analysis. Positive correlations between the values of solvent retention capacity of water, sodium carbonate, lactic acid and sucrose, retention rate of alkaline water, soluble pentosans and damaged starch were observed. The characterization of the tested fours and their differentiation based on their physicochemical properties allowed the selection of genotypes with different functional properties. In the cluster analysis, cluster 1 pooled the materials with the best physicochemical features of four, which increases the possibilities of its use for human consumption.Fil: Castaño, M. N..
