A discussion of the scaling effect in numerical simulation of the extrusion process
The main objective of the work of this paper is to study the possibility of using a small scale geometrical model in the numerical simulation of aluminium extrusion. The advantages and shortcomings of the application of the
geometrically similar model in FEM simulation are discussed. Thermal – mechanical and metallurgical combined
simulations are performed within two tests using geometrically similar models and assessment is made in terms of mechanical and material properties. It was found that small scale simulation could not reproduce most of the
important forming parameters of the original process, although it could help to bring about significant savings in
computation time
The Behavior of Soluble Salt in Sharkey Clay
Soluble salt problems do exist and are significant in Arkansas. Studies have been conducted on Crowley silt loam (Typic Albaqualfs) which have established the behavior of soluble salt in that soil. The major objective of this study was to quantify the behavior of soluble salt in a second important Mississippi River Delta soil - the Sharkey (Vertic Haplaquepts). To this end, estimation of the downward redistribution of salt and the estimation of various components of the water balance for this soil served as specific objectives. Field studies were designed to monitor the movement of salt in the Sharkey soil and to characterize selected components of the water balance. In total, three tentative conclusions may be drawn from the data. First, the infiltration for the Sharkey soil was approximately three times that of the Crowley silt loam. The average value was 29 cm for the rice season. Second, levee seepage, while significant for small plots, was shown to be small for production-sized fields. Levee seepage remained relatively constant throughout the season and averaged 0.025 nvfym/d. And third, downward redistribution of salt was large and appeared to follow a pattern where a peak occurred at the surface and, possibly, at the lower soil depths
Visual Search for Galaxies near the Northern Crossing of the Supergalactic plane by the Milky Way
We have visually examined twelve Palomar red Plates for galaxies at low
Galactic latitude b, where the Supergalactic Plane (SGP) is crossed by the
Galactic Plane (GP), at Galactic longitude l ~135 degrees. The catalogue
consists of 2575 galaxy candidates, of which 462 have major axis diameters d >=
0.8 arc min (uncorrected for extinction). Galaxy candidates can be identified
down to |b| ~ 0 degrees. One of our galaxy candidates (J24 = Dwingeloo 1) has
recently been discovered independently in 21cm by Kraan-Korteweg et al. (1994)
as a nearby galaxy. Comparisons with the structures seen in the IRAS and UGC
catalogues are made. We compare the success rate of identifying galaxies using
the IRAS Point Source Catalogue under different colour selection criteria. The
criteria that require both the 60 micron and 100 micron fluxes to be of high
quality, have the highest probability of selecting a galaxy (with d >= 0.6 arc
min), but at the expense of selecting a smaller number of galaxies in total.Comment: uuencoded compressed postscript, without figures. The figures are

Strain-stress study of AlxGa1-xN/AlN heterostructures on c-plane sapphire and related optical properties
This work presents a systematic study of stress and strain of AlxGa1-xN/AlN
with composition ranging from GaN to AlN, grown on a c-plane sapphire by
metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, using synchrotron radiation
high-resolution X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space mapping. The c-plane of
the AlxGa1-xN epitaxial layers exhibits compressive strain, while the a-plane
exhibits tensile strain. The biaxial stress and strain are found to increase
with increasing Al composition, although the lattice mismatch between the
AlxGa1-xN and the buffer layer AlN gets smaller. A reduction in the lateral
coherence lengths and an increase in the edge and screw dislocations are seen
as the AlxGa1-xN composition is varied from GaN to AlN, exhibiting a clear
dependence of the crystal properties of AlxGa1-xN on the Al content. The
bandgap of the epitaxial layers is slightly lower than predicted value due to a
larger tensile strain effect on the a-axis compared to the compressive strain
on the c-axis. Raman characteristics of the AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit a shift
in the phonon peaks with the Al composition. The effect of strain is also
discussed on the optical phonon energies of the epitaxial layers. The
techniques discussed here can be used to study other similar materials.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
Tidal Remnants and Intergalactic HII Regions
We report the discovery of two small intergalactic HII regions in the loose
group of galaxies around the field elliptical NGC 1490. The HII regions are
located at least 100 kpc from any optical galaxy but are associated with a
number of large HI clouds that are lying along an arc 500 kpc in length and
that have no optical counterpart on the Digital Sky Survey. The sum of the HI
masses of the clouds is almost 10^10 M_sun and the largest HI cloud is about
100 kpc in size. Deep optical imaging reveals a very low surface brightness
counterpart to this largest HI cloud, making this one of the HI richest optical
galaxies known (M_HI/L_V~200). Spectroscopy of the HII regions indicates that
the abundance in these HII regions is only slightly sub-solar, excluding a
primordial origin of the HI clouds. The HI clouds are perhaps remnants
resulting from the tidal disruption of a reasonably sized galaxy, probably
quite some time ago, by the loose group to which NGC1490 belongs.
Alternatively, they are remnants of the merger that created the field
elliptical NGC1490. The isolated HII regions show that star formation on a very
small scale can occur in intergalactic space in gas drawn from galaxies by
tidal interactions. Many such intergalactic small star formation regions may
