    Mesoscopic structure conditions the emergence of cooperation on social networks

    We study the evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma on two social networks obtained from actual relational data. We find very different cooperation levels on each of them that can not be easily understood in terms of global statistical properties of both networks. We claim that the result can be understood at the mesoscopic scale, by studying the community structure of the networks. We explain the dependence of the cooperation level on the temptation parameter in terms of the internal structure of the communities and their interconnections. We then test our results on community-structured, specifically designed artificial networks, finding perfect agreement with the observations in the real networks. Our results support the conclusion that studies of evolutionary games on model networks and their interpretation in terms of global properties may not be sufficient to study specific, real social systems. In addition, the community perspective may be helpful to interpret the origin and behavior of existing networks as well as to design structures that show resilient cooperative behavior.Comment: Largely improved version, includes an artificial network model that fully confirms the explanation of the results in terms of inter- and intra-community structur

    π Junction to probe antiphase s-Wave pairing in iron pnictide superconductors

    Josephson junctions between a FeAs-based superconductor with antiphase s-wave pairing and a conventional s-wave superconductor are studied. The translational invariance in a planar junction between a single crystal pnictide and an aluminum metal greatly enhances the relative weight of electron pockets in the pnictide to the critical current. In a wide doping region of the pnictide, a planar and a point contact junction have opposite phases, which can be used to design a trijunction ring with π phase to probe the antiphase pairing. © 2009 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    If players are sparse social dilemmas are too: Importance of percolation for evolution of cooperation

    Spatial reciprocity is a well known tour de force of cooperation promotion. A thorough understanding of the effects of different population densities is therefore crucial. Here we study the evolution of cooperation in social dilemmas on different interaction graphs with a certain fraction of vacant nodes. We find that sparsity may favor the resolution of social dilemmas, especially if the population density is close to the percolation threshold of the underlying graph. Regardless of the type of the governing social dilemma as well as particularities of the interaction graph, we show that under pairwise imitation the percolation threshold is a universal indicator of how dense the occupancy ought to be for cooperation to be optimally promoted. We also demonstrate that myopic updating, due to the lack of efficient spread of information via imitation, renders the reported mechanism dysfunctional, which in turn further strengthens its foundations.Comment: 6 two-column pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in Scientific Reports [related work available at http://arxiv.org/abs/1205.0541

    Rapid identification of mutations in GJC2 in primary lymphoedema using whole exome sequencing combined with linkage analysis with delineation of the phenotype.

    Background: Primary lymphoedema describes a chronic, frequently progressive, failure of lymphatic drainage. This disorder is frequently genetic in origin, and a multigenerational family in which eight individuals developed postnatal lymphoedema of all four limbs was ascertained from the joint Lymphoedema/Genetic clinic at St George's Hospital. Methods: Linkage analysis was used to determine a locus, and exome sequencing was employed to look for causative variants. Results: Linkage analysis revealed cosegregation of a 16.1 Mb haplotype on chromosome 1q42 that contained 173 known or predicted genes. Whole exome sequencing in a single affected individual was undertaken, and the search for the causative variant was focused to within the linkage interval. This approach revealed two novel non-synonymous single nucleotide substitutions within the chromosome 1 locus, in NVL and GJC2. NVL and GJC2 were sequenced in an additional cohort of individuals with a similar phenotype and non-synonymous variants were found in GJC2 in four additional families. Conclusion: This report demonstrates the power of exome sequencing efficiently applied to a traditional positional cloning pipeline in disease gene discovery, and suggests that the phenotype produced by GJC2 mutations is predominantly one of 4 limb lymphoedema

    Directional ordering of fluctuations in a two-dimensional compass model

    A classical realization of directional coupling in two dimension of the effective orbital-orbital interaction in the Mott insulating phase of the transition metal oxides (TMO) was presented. The model exhibited partial orbital ordering in the form of directional ordering of fluctuation at low temperatures stabilized by an entropy gap. The directional ordering was necessarily accompanied by a lattice distortion and the bond length in horizontal and vertical directions became unequal when the couplings of the orbital isosopin to lattice modes were included. Analysis shows that the compass model has a low temperature phase which exhibited long-ranged correlations in the directions of fluctuations in both isospin and lattice spaces.published_or_final_versio

    High volumetric energy density capacitors based on new electrode material lanthanum nitride

The final version is available from the American Chemical Society via the DOI in this recordLaN is synthesized via calcining La2O3 in NH3 and studied as capacitive material for energy storage. A volumetric capacitance of 951.3 F cm-3 was found in 1 mol dm-3 Na2SO4 using a current density of 1 Ag-1, with less than 1% loss of capacitance being experienced after 5000 cycles. In addition, 87.3% of the initial capacitance remained at a current density of 10 A g-1. LaN exhibits high capacitance that is attributed to subsurface space charge accumulation with a possible electric double-layer capacitor component. A reversible electrode process ensures long cycle life and favorable electrical charge transfer.     Evolution of Cooperation and Coordination in a Dynamically Networked Society

    Situations of conflict giving rise to social dilemmas are widespread in society and game theory is one major way in which they can be investigated. Starting from the observation that individuals in society interact through networks of acquaintances, we model the co-evolution of the agents' strategies and of the social network itself using two prototypical games, the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Stag Hunt. Allowing agents to dismiss ties and establish new ones, we find that cooperation and coordination can be achieved through the self-organization of the social network, a result that is non-trivial, especially in the Prisoner's Dilemma case. The evolution and stability of cooperation implies the condensation of agents exploiting particular game strategies into strong and stable clusters which are more densely connected, even in the more difficult case of the Prisoner's Dilemma.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. to appea
