The Inelastic cross-section and Survival Probabilities at LHC in mini-jet models

    Get PDF
Recent results for the total and inelastic hadronic cross-sections from LHC experiments are compared with predictions from a single channel PDF driven eikonal mini-jet model and from an empirical model. The role of soft gluon resummation in the infrared region in taming the rise of mini-jets and their contribution to the increase of the total cross-sections at high energies are discussed. Survival probabilities at LHC, whose theoretical estimates range from circa 10% to a few per mille, will be estimated in this model and compared with results from QCD inspired models and from multichannel eikonal models. We revisit a previous calculation and examine the origin of these discrepancies

Reinforcement learning of normative monitoring intensities

Choosing actions within norm-regulated environments involves balancing achieving one’s goals and coping with any penalties for non-compliant behaviour. This choice becomes more complicated in environments where there is uncertainty. In this paper, we address the question of choosing actions in environments where there is uncertainty regarding both the outcomes of agent actions and the intensity of monitoring for norm violations. Our technique assumes no prior knowledge of probabilities over action outcomes or the likelihood of norm violations being detected by employing reinforcement learning to discover both the dynamics of the environment and the effectiveness of the enforcer. Results indicate agents become aware of greater rewards for violations when enforcement is lax, which gradually become less attractive as the enforcement is increased

ANALYSIS OF A COMBINED BRAYTON/RANKINE CYCLE WITH TWO REGENERATORS IN PARALLEL

This work presents a configuration of two regenerators in parallel for a power generation Brayton/Rankine cycle where the output power is 10 MW. The working fluids considered for the Brayton and Rankine cycles are air and water, respectively. The addition of a regenerator with the previous existing cycle of this kind resulted in the addition of a second-stage turbine in the Rankine cycle of reheat. The objective of this modification is to increase the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In order to examine the efficiency of the new configuration, it is performed a thermodynamic modelling and numerical simulations for both cases: a regular Brayton/Rankine cycle and the one with the proposed changes. At the end of the simulations, the two cycles are compared, and it is seen that the new configuration reaches a 0.9% higher efficiency. In addition, the vapor quality at the exit of the higher turbine is higher, reducing the required mass flow rate in 14%
