Hazard identification and characterization of welfare aspects during transport of farm animals
Within the EU, free movement of animals from one Member State to another and more uniformity among production animals and production systems has resulted in more long distance transport from farm to farm or from farm to slaughterhouse. Since there is a lot of discussion about transport of farm animals within Europe a workshop on transport of farm animals was organized. The objective of the workshop was to identify research priorities and obtaining commitment with regard to livestock transport through dialogue and debate on issues of welfare, legislation and economic aspects. The second objective of the workshop was to try to set research priorities and to obtain consensus among stakeholders about potential risks and “blank spots” in the transport of livestock, in particular with regard to animals welfare aspect
On the correlation function of the characteristic polynomials of the hermitian Wigner ensemble
We consider the asymptotics of the correlation functions of the
characteristic polynomials of the hermitian Wigner matrices .
We show that for the correlation function of any even order the asymptotic
coincides with this for the GUE up to a factor, depending only on the forth
moment of the common probability law of entries , ,
i.e. that the higher moments of do not contribute to the above limit.Comment: 20
HOUSEHOLDS' EXPERIENCES WITH THE RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT IN SOUTH CAROLINA
The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), abbreviated as RIFA, is believed to have been brought by accident to Mobile, Alabama in the 1930s via ship ballast from South America. The RIFA was first reported in Charleston and Orangeburg counties in South Carolina in 1952 and has since spread to all 46 counties in the state. The RIFA has had adverse impacts on the environments it has infested. In natural environments, the young of ground-nesting insects, reptiles, birds and mammals are subject to RIFA predation. In agriculture, the RIFA damages crops and livestock. The RIFA poses a health threat to humans, as it is aggressive and has a venomous sting. To learn more about the current impacts of the RIFA, a random sample of South Carolina households was conducted between November 1998 and January 1999. This report summarizes the survey results.Environmental Economics and Policy,
Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory for curved spacetime backgrounds
We consider a modified version of four-dimensional electrodynamics, which has
a photonic Chern-Simons-like term with spacelike background vector in the
action. Light propagation in curved spacetime backgrounds is discussed using
the geometrical-optics approximation. The corresponding light path is modified,
which allows for new effects. In a Schwarzschild background, for example, there
now exist stable bounded orbits of light rays and the two polarization modes of
light rays in unbounded orbits can have different gravitational redshifts. An
Erratum with important corrections has been published, which appears as
Appendix E in this arXiv version.Comment: 28 pages with elsart, v6: published version of paper and Erratu
Simulations of the Microwave Sky and of its ``Observations''
Here follows a preliminary report on the construction of fake millimeter and
sub-millimeter skies, as observed by virtual instruments, e.g. the COBRA/SAMBA
mission, using theoretical modeling and data extrapolations. Our goal is to
create maps as realistic as possible of the relevant physical contributions
which may contribute to the detected signals. This astrophysical modeling is
followed by simulations of the measurement process itself by a given
instrumental configuration. This will enable a precise determination of what
can and cannot be achieved with a particular experimental configuration, and
provide a feedback on how to improve the overall design. It is a key step on
the way to define procedures for the separation of the different physical
processes in the future observed maps. Note that this tool will also prove
useful in preparing and analyzing current (\eg\ balloon borne) Microwave
Background experiments. Keywords: Cosmology -- Microwave Background

The Dutch moral foundations stimulus database:A validation of standardized vignettes and images
Moral judgments are shaped by socialization and cultural heritage. Understanding how moral considerations vary across the globe requires the systematic development of moral stimuli for use in different cultures and languages. Focusing on Dutch populations, we adapted and validated two recent instruments for examining moral judgments: 1) the Moral Foundations Vignettes (MFVs) and 2) the Socio-Moral Image Database (SMID). We translated all 120 MFVs from English into Dutch and selected 120 images from SMID that primarily display moral, immoral, or neutral content. 586 crowd-workers from the Netherlands provided over 38,460 individual judgments for both stimuli sets on moral and affective dimensions. For both instruments, we find that moral judgments and relationships between the moral foundations and political orientation are similar to those reported in the US, Australia, and Brazil. We provide the validated MFV and SMID images, along with associated rating data here: https://osf.io/9gnza

Using cascading Bloom filters to improve the memory usage for de Brujin graphs
De Brujin graphs are widely used in bioinformatics for processing
next-generation sequencing data. Due to a very large size of NGS datasets, it
is essential to represent de Bruijn graphs compactly, and several approaches to
this problem have been proposed recently. In this work, we show how to reduce
the memory required by the algorithm of [3] that represents de Brujin graphs
using Bloom filters. Our method requires 30% to 40% less memory with respect to
the method of [3], with insignificant impact to construction time. At the same
time, our experiments showed a better query time compared to [3]. This is, to
our knowledge, the best practical representation for de Bruijn graphs.Comment: 12 pages, submitte
