Increased consumption of fruit and vegetables is related to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease: meta-analysis of cohort studies
Increased consumption of fruit and vegetables has been shown to be associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in many epidemiological studies, however, the extent of the association is uncertain. We quantitatively assessed the relation between fruit and vegetable intake and incidence of CHD by carrying out a meta-analysis of cohort studies. Studies were included if they reported relative risks (RRs) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) of CHD with respect to frequency of fruit and vegetable intake. Twelve studies, consisting of 13 independent cohorts, met the inclusion criteria. There were 278 459 individuals (9143 CHD events) with a median follow-up of 11 years. Compared with individuals who had less than 3 servings/day of fruit and vegetables, the pooled RR of CHD was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.86–1.00, P=0.06) for those with 3–5 servings/day and 0.83 (0.77–0.89, P<0.0001) for those with more than 5 servings/day. Subgroup analyses showed that both fruits and vegetables had a significant protective effect on CHD. Our meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies demonstrates that increased consumption of fruit and vegetables from less than 3 to more than 5 servings/day is related to a 17% reduction in CHD risk, whereas increased intake to 3–5 servings/day is associated with a smaller and borderline significant reduction in CHD risk. These results provide strong support for the recommendations to consume more than 5 servings/day of fruit and vegetables.<br /
On the Three-dimensional Central Moment Lattice Boltzmann Method
A three-dimensional (3D) lattice Boltzmann method based on central moments is
derived. Two main elements are the local attractors in the collision term and
the source terms representing the effect of external and/or self-consistent
internal forces. For suitable choices of the orthogonal moment basis for the
three-dimensional, twenty seven velocity (D3Q27), and, its subset, fifteen
velocity (D3Q15) lattice models, attractors are expressed in terms of
factorization of lower order moments as suggested in an earlier work; the
corresponding source terms are specified to correctly influence lower order
hydrodynamic fields, while avoiding aliasing effects for higher order moments.
These are achieved by successively matching the corresponding continuous and
discrete central moments at various orders, with the final expressions written
in terms of raw moments via a transformation based on the binomial theorem.
Furthermore, to alleviate the discrete effects with the source terms, they are
treated to be temporally semi-implicit and second-order, with the implicitness
subsequently removed by means of a transformation. As a result, the approach is
frame-invariant by construction and its emergent dynamics describing fully 3D
fluid motion in the presence of force fields is Galilean invariant. Numerical
experiments for a set of benchmark problems demonstrate its accuracy.Comment: 55 pages, 8 figure
Finite Temperature Pion Scattering to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory
We present the pion-pion elastic scattering amplitude at finite temperature
to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The thermal scattering amplitude
properly defined allows to generalize the perturbative unitarity relation to
the case. Our result provides a model independent prediction of an
enhanced pion-pion low-energy phase shift with the temperature and it has
physical applications within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Some references and clarifying comments added

Meson and tetra-quark mixing
The mixing between q-qbar meson and qqbar-qqbar tetra-quark states is
examined within an effective QCD Coulomb gauge Hamiltonian model. Mixing matrix
elements of the Hamiltonian are computed and then diagonalized yielding an
improved prediction for the low-lying J^{PC} = 0^{+/- +}, 1^{--} isoscalar
spectra. Mixing effects were found significant for the scalar hadrons but not
for the 1^{--} states, which is consistent with the ideal mixing of vector
mesons. A perturbative assessment of the exact QCD kernel is also reported.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Longitudinal polarization asymmetry of leptons in the pure leptonic B decays
Longitudinal lepton polarization asymmetry in B_q -> l l (q = d, s$ and l =
e, mu, tau) decays is investigated. The analysis is done in a general manner by
using the effective operators approach. It is shown that the longitudinal
lepton polarization asymmetry would provide a direct search for the scalar and
pseudoscalar type interactions, which are induced in all variants of
Higgs-doublet models.Comment: 7 page
Three-dimensional lattice-Boltzmann simulations of critical spinodal decomposition in binary immiscible fluids
We use a modified Shan-Chen, noiseless lattice-BGK model for binary
immiscible, incompressible, athermal fluids in three dimensions to simulate the
coarsening of domains following a deep quench below the spinodal point from a
symmetric and homogeneous mixture into a two-phase configuration. We find the
average domain size growing with time as , where increases
in the range , consistent with a crossover between
diffusive and hydrodynamic viscous, , behaviour. We find
good collapse onto a single scaling function, yet the domain growth exponents
differ from others' works' for similar values of the unique characteristic
length and time that can be constructed out of the fluid's parameters. This
rebuts claims of universality for the dynamical scaling hypothesis. At early
times, we also find a crossover from to in the scaled structure
function, which disappears when the dynamical scaling reasonably improves at
later times. This excludes noise as the cause for a behaviour, as
proposed by others. We also observe exponential temporal growth of the
structure function during the initial stages of the dynamics and for
wavenumbers less than a threshold value.Comment: 45 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in Physical Review
Is Vtb=1 ?
The strongest constraint on Vtb presently comes from the 3 x 3 unitarity of
the CKM matrix, which fixes Vtb to be very close to one. If the unitarity is
relaxed, current information from top production at Tevatron still leaves open
the possibility that Vtb is sizably smaller than one. In minimal extensions of
the standard model with extra heavy quarks, the unitarity constraints are much
weaker and the EW precision parameters entail the strongest bounds on Vtb. We
discuss the experimental perspectives of discovering and identifying such new
physics models at the Tevatron and the LHC, through a precise measurement of
Vtb from the single top cross sections and by the study of processes where the
extra heavy quarks are produced.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Quasinormal modes from potentials surrounding the charged dilaton black hole
We clarify the purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies of a massless scalar
perturbation on the 3D charged-dilaton black holes. This case is quite
interesting because the potential-step appears outside the event horizon
similar to the case of the electromagnetic perturbations on the large
Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. It turns out that the potential-step type
provides the purely imaginary quasinormal frequencies, while the
potential-barrier type gives the complex quasinormal modes.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Analysis of the radiative decays among the charmonium states
In this article, we study the radiative decays among the charmonium states
with the heavy quark effective theory, and make predictions for the ratios
among the radiative decay widths of an special multiplet to another multiplet.
The predictions can be confronted with the experimental data in the future and
put additional constraints in identifying the , , charmonium-like
mesons.Comment: 12 pages, revised revisio
