    The effect of trapping superparamagnetic beads on domain wall motion

    Domain walls may act as localized field sources to trap and move superparamagnetic beads for manipulating biological cells and DNA. The interaction between beads of various diameters and a wall is investigated using a combination of micromagnetic and analytical models. Domain walls can transport beads under applied magnetic fields but the mutual attraction between the bead and wall causes drag forces affecting the bead to couple into the wall motion. Therefore, the interaction with the bead causes a fundamental change in the domain wall dynamics, reducing the wall mobility by five orders of magnitude. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics.     A methodology to compile multi-hazard interrelationships in a data-scarce setting: an application to Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

    This paper introduces a multifaceted methodology to identify and compile single natural hazards and multi-hazard interrelationships within the context of data-scarce urban settings, exemplified by Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. This approach integrates (i) five blended types of evidence to support a more nuanced and holistic understanding of a hazardscape where data are scarce and (ii) a 2-hour stakeholder workshop with seven participants to provide greater context to the hazards, consider their impacts through the co-production of multi-hazard interrelationship scenarios, and how this methodology could support more people-centred disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies. We use blended evidence types, including academic literature, grey literature, media, databases, and social media, to systematically search for exemplars of single hazards and multi-hazard interrelationships that have influenced or could potentially influence Kathmandu Valley. We collated 58 sources of evidence for single hazards and 21 sources of evidence for multi-hazard interrelationships. Using these sources, our study identified 21 single hazard types across six hazard groups (geophysical, hydrological, shallow Earth processes, atmospheric, biophysical, and space/celestial hazards) and 83 multi-hazard interrelationships (12 that have direct case study evidence of previous influence in Kathmandu Valley) that might influence Kathmandu Valley. These exemplars are collated into two databases that accompany this paper. We supplement these exemplars with multi-hazard interrelationship scenarios and multi-hazard impacts developed by stakeholders engaged in DRR research and practice in Kathmandu Valley. The results illustrate the complexity of the hazard landscape, with many single hazards and multi-hazard interrelationships potentially influencing Kathmandu Valley. The research emphasises the importance of inclusive DRR strategies that recognise disaggregated impacts experienced by different social groups. This knowledge can inform the development of dynamic risk scenarios in planning and civil protection, thus strengthening multi-hazard approaches to DRR in “Global South” urban areas such as Kathmandu Valley

    Evaluating the impact of cycle helmet use on severe traumatic brain injury and death in a national cohort of over 11000 pedal cyclists : a retrospective study from the NHS England trauma audit and research network dataset

    Objectives In the last 10 years there has been a significant increase in cycle traffic in the UK, with an associated increase in the overall number of cycling injuries. Despite this, and the significant media, political and public health debate into this issue, there remains an absence of studies from the UK assessing the impact of helmet use on rates of serious injury presenting to the National Health Service (NHS) in cyclists. Setting The NHS England Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) Database was interrogated to identify all adult (≥16 years) patients presenting to hospital with cycling-related major injuries, during a period from 14 March 2012 to 30 September 2017 (the last date for which a validated dataset was available). Participants 11 patients met inclusion criteria. Data on the use of cycling helmets were available in 6621 patients. Outcome measures TARN injury descriptors were used to compare patterns of injury, care and mortality in helmeted versus non-helmeted cohorts. Results Data on cycle helmet use were available for 6621 of the 11 192 cycle-related injuries entered onto the TARN Database in the 66 months of this study (93 excluded as not pedal cyclists). There was a significantly higher crude 30-day mortality in un-helmeted cyclists 5.6% (4.8%–6.6%) versus helmeted cyclists 1.8% (1.4%–2.2%) (p<0.001). Cycle helmet use was also associated with a reduction in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) 19.1% (780, 18.0%–20.4%) versus 47.6% (1211, 45.6%–49.5%) (p<0.001), intensive care unit requirement 19.6% (797, 18.4%–20.8%) versus 27.1% (691, 25.4%–28.9%) (p<0.001) and neurosurgical intervention 2.5% (103, 2.1%–3.1%) versus 8.5% (217, 7.5%–9.7%) (p<0.001). There was a statistically significant increase in chest, spinal, upper and lower limb injury in the helmeted group in comparison to the un-helmeted group (all p<0.001), though in a subsequent analysis of these anatomical injury patterns, those cyclists wearing helmets were still found to have lower rates of TBI. In reviewing TARN injury codes for specific TBI and facial injuries, there was a highly significant decrease in rates of impact injury between cyclists wearing helmets and those not. Conclusions This study suggests that there is a significant correlation between use of cycle helmets and reduction in adjusted mortality and morbidity associated with TBI and facial injury

    Charmonium Hybrid Production in Exclusive B Meson Decays

    Recent data on charmonium production in B-meson decays suggest that charmonium hybrid mesons with mass ~4 GeV may be produced in B-decay via c\bar{c} colour octet operators. Some of these states are likely to be narrow with clean signatures to J/\psi pi^+ pi^- final states.     A gamma- and X-ray detector for cryogenic, high magnetic field applications

    As part of an experiment to measure the spectrum of photons emitted in beta-decay of the free neutron, we developed and operated a detector consisting of 12 bismuth germanate (BGO) crystals coupled to avalanche photodiodes (APDs). The detector was operated near liquid nitrogen temperature in the bore of a superconducting magnet and registered photons with energies from 5 keV to 1000 keV. To enlarge the detection range, we also directly detected soft X-rays with energies between 0.2 keV and 20 keV with three large area APDs. The construction and operation of the detector is presented, as well as information on operation of APDs at cryogenic temperatures

    Radiative β decay of the free neutron

    The theory of quantum electrodynamics predicts that the β decay of the neutron into a proton, electron, and antineutrino is accompanied by a continuous spectrum of emitted photons described as inner bremsstrahlung. While this phenomenon has been observed in nuclear β decay and electron-capture decay for many years, it has only been recently observed in free-neutron decay. We present a detailed discussion of an experiment in which the radiative decay mode of the free neutron was observed. In this experiment, the branching ratio for this rare decay was determined by recording photons that were correlated with both the electron and proton emitted in neutron decay. We determined the branching ratio for photons with energy between 15 and 340 keV to be (3.09±0.32)×10-3 (68% level of confidence), where the uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects. This value for the branching ratio is consistent with theoretical predictions. The characteristic energy spectrum of the radiated photons, which differs from the uncorrelated background spectrum, is also consistent with the theoretical spectrum

    Improved Determination of the Mass of the 1+1^{-+} Light Hybrid Meson From QCD Sum Rules

    We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) αs\alpha_s-corrections to the contributions of the condensates and 2^2 in the current-current correlator of the hybrid current g\barq(x)\gamma_{\nu}iF_{\mu\nu}^aT^aq(x) using the external field method in Feynman gauge. After incorporating these NLO contributions into the Laplace sum-rules, the mass of the JPCJ^{PC}=1+1^{-+} light hybrid meson is recalculated using the QCD sum rule approach. We find that the sum rules exhibit enhanced stability when the NLO αs\alpha_s-corrections are included in the sum rule analysis, resulting in a 1+1^{-+} light hybrid meson mass of approximately 1.6 GeV.Comment: revtex4, 10 pages, 7 eps figures embedded in manuscrip

    The relation between the column density structures and the magnetic field orientation in the Vela C molecular complex

    We statistically evaluated the relative orientation between gas column density structures, inferred from Herschel submillimetre observations, and the magnetic field projected on the plane of sky, inferred from polarized thermal emission of Galactic dust observed by the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Submillimetre Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol) at 250, 350, and 500 μm, towards the Vela C molecular complex. First, we find very good agreement between the polarization orientations in the three wavelength-bands, suggesting that, at the considered common angular resolution of 3.0 that corresponds to a physical scale of approximately 0.61 pc, the inferred magnetic field orientation is not significantly affected by temperature or dust grain alignment effects. Second, we find that the relative orientation between gas column density structures and the magnetic field changes progressively with increasing gas column density, from mostly parallel or having no preferred orientation at low column densities to mostly perpendicular at the highest column densities. This observation is in agreement with previous studies by the Planck collaboration towards more nearby molecular clouds. Finally, we find a correspondence between (a) the trends in relative orientation between the column density structures and the projected magnetic field; and (b) the shape of the column density probability distribution functions (PDFs). In the sub-regions of Vela C dominated by one clear filamentary structure, or "ridges", where the high-column density tails of the PDFs are flatter, we find a sharp transition from preferentially parallel or having no preferred relative orientation at low column densities to preferentially perpendicular at highest column densities. In the sub-regions of Vela C dominated by several filamentary structures with multiple orientations, or "nests", where the maximum values of the column density are smaller than in the ridge-like sub-regions and the high-column density tails of the PDFs are steeper, such a transition is also present, but it is clearly less sharp than in the ridge-like sub-regions. Both of these results suggest that the magnetic field is dynamically important for the formation of density structures in this region

    The masses and decay widths of heavy hybrid mesons

    We first derive the mass sum rules for the heavy hybrid mesons to obtain the binding energy and decay constants in the leading order of HQET. The pionic couplings between the lightest 1+1^{-+} hybrid (Qqˉg)(Q\bar q g) and the lowest three heavy meson doublets are calculated with the light cone QCD sum rules. With SUf(3)SU_f (3) flavor symmetry we calculate the widths for all the possible two-body decay processes with a Goldstone boson in the final state. The total width of the 1+1^{-+} hybrid is estimated to be 300 MeV. We find the dominant decay mode of the 1+1^{-+} hybrid is 1+π+1+1^{-+}\to \pi + 1^+ where the 1+1^+ heavy meson belongs to the (1+,2+)(1^+,2^+) doublet. Its branching ratio is about 80% so this mode can be used for the experimental search of the lowest heavy hybrid meson.Comment: 20 pages + 12 PS figures, introduction revised, Fig 7 updated, to appear in Phys.
