    An ultrafast 1 x M all-optical WDM packet-switched router based on the PPM header address

    This paper presents an all-optical 1 x M WDM router architecture for packet routing at multiple wavelengths simultaneously, with no wavelength conversion modules. The packet header address adopted is based on the pulse position modulation (PPM) format, thus enabling the use of only a singlebitwise optical AND gate for fast header address correlation. It offers multicast as well as broadcast capabilities. It is shown that a high speed packet routing at 160 Gb/s can be achieved with a low channel crosstalk (CXT) of ~ -27 dB at a channel spacing of greater than 0.4 THz and a demultiplexer bandwidth of 500 GHz

    Indoor free space optics link under the weak turbulence regime: measurements and model validation

The copy of record is available at IET Digital LibraryIn this study, the authors present the measurements performed on a free space optics (FSO) communications link using an indoor atmospheric chamber. In particular, the authors have generated several different optical turbulence conditions, demonstrating how even the weak turbulence regime can strongly affect the FSO link performance. The authors have carried out an in-depth analysis of the data collected during the measurements, and calculated the turbulence strength (i.e. scintillation index and Rytov variance) and the important performance metrics (i.e. the Q-factor and bit error rate) to evaluate the FSO link quality. Moreover, the authors have tested, for the first time, an appositely developed temporally-correlated gamma-gamma channel model to generate the temporal irradiance fluctuations observed at the receiver. This has been accomplished by using a complete analysis tool that enables the authors to fully simulate the experimental FSO link. Finally, the authors compare the generated time-series with the collected experimental data, showing a good agreement and thus proving the effectiveness of the model.This work was supported by the European Space Agency under grant no. 5401001020.     Expanded Multiband Super-Nyquist CAP Modulation for Highly Bandlimited Organic Visible Light Communications

    In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a novel expanded nonorthogonal multiband super-Nyquist carrier-less amplitude and phase (m-ESCAP) modulation for bandlimited organic visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed scheme has the same bandwidth requirement as the conventional m-CAP while breaking the orthogonality between subcarriers by purposely overlapping them. We compare m-ESCAP with the conventional m-CAP and a compressed nonorthogonal version of m-CAP (m-SCAP) in terms of measured bit error rate (BER) performance, bit rates, and spectral efficiencies. We show that the m-ESCAP system offers improvement in the bit rate of \sim 10% and 20% compared to the m-CAP and m-SCAP, respectively, and in the spectral efficiency of \sim 20% compared to m-CAP. These gains are achieved at the cost of increased BER, which, however, remains below the 7% forward error correction limit

    A 10 Mb/s visible light communication system using a low bandwidth polymer light-emitting diode

    In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a 10 Mb/s error free visible light communications (VLC) system using polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) for the first time. The PLED under test is a blue emitter with ∼600 kHz bandwidth. Having such a low bandwidth means the introduction of an intersymbol interference (ISI) induced penalty at higher transmission speeds and thus the requirement for an equalizer. In this work we improve on previous literature by implementing a decision feedback equalizer, rather than a linear equalizer. Considering 7% and 20% forward error correction codes, transmission speeds up to ∼12 Mb/s can be supported

    10 Mb/s visible light transmission system using a polymer light-emitting diode with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing

    We present a newly designed polymer light-emitting diode with a bandwidth of ∼350 kHz for high-speed visible light communications. Using this new polymer light-emitting diode as a transmitter, we have achieved a record transmission speed of 10 Mb/s for a polymer light-emitting diode-based optical communication system with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique, matching the performance of single carrier formats using multitap equalization. For achieving such a high data-rate, a power pre-emphasis technique was adopted

    Experimental demonstration of staggered cap modulation for low bandwidth red-emitting polymer-LED based visible light communications

    In this paper we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, staggered carrier-less amplitude and phase (sCAP) modulation for visible light communication systems based on polymer light-emitting diodes emitting at ∼639 nm. The key advantage offered by sCAP in comparison to conventional multiband CAP is its full use of the available spectrum. In this work, we compare sCAP, which utilises four orthogonal filters to generate the signal, with a conventional 4-band multi-CAP system and on-off keying (OOK). We transmit each modulation format with equal energy and present a record un-coded transmission speed of ∼6 Mb/s. This represents gains of 25% and 65% over the achievable rate using 4-CAP and OOK, respectively

    The Antnet Routing Algorithm- A Modified Version

    Abstract – Antnet is an agent based routing algorithm that is influenced from the unsophisticated and individual ant’s emergent behaviour. Ants (software agents) are used in antnet to collect information and to update the probabilistic distance vector routing table entries. Modified antnet algorithm has been introduced, which improve the throughput and average delay. Results shows that by detecting and dropping 0.5 % of packets routed through the non-optimal routes the average delay per packet decreased and network throughput can be increased. The effect of the traffic fluctuations has been limited with the boundaries introduced in this paper and the number of ants in the network has been limited with the current throughput of the network at any given time.
