Risk assessment of mercury and methyl mercury intake via sardine and swordfish consumption in Algeria
NO ABSTRACT AVAILABLETotal mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the flesh of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) fished in three Algerian coasts were determined by a direct mercury analyzer (DMA). We also assessed the risk to which the consumer was exposed to by calculating the estimated daily intakes (EDIs), target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). The average concentrations of Hg and MeHg in the flesh of sardine were similar (0.04 mg/kg wet weight) and in swordfish were 0.61 mg/kg wet weight; 0.57 mg/kg wet weight, respectively. These concentrations have not surpassed the thresholds set by the Algerian and European regulations. The estimated daily intakes for Hg and MeHg were similar in sardine (0.0064 ÎŒg/kg/day) and were 0.098 ÎŒg/kg/day and 0.092 ÎŒg/kg/day for Hg and MeHg, respectively, in swordfish. These values did not exceed the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). The target hazard quotient (THQ) and the hazard index (HI) calculated were < 1. Consequently, consumption of these fishes does not pose any risk for the adult groups of the Algerian population regarding mercury, and methylmercury studied
Selected nondigestible carbohydrates and prebiotics support the growth of probiotic fish bacteria mono-cultures in vitro
To search for nondigestible but fermentable (NDF) carbohydrates and prebiotics with a potency to promote the growth of selected bacteria in vitro.
The growth of three reference bacteria strains Bacillus subtilis LMG 7135(T), Carnobacterium piscicola LMG 9839, Lactobacillus plantarum LMG 9211 and one candidate probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis was investigated over a minimum period of 48 h in the presence of beta-glucan, xylo-oligosaccharide, arabinoxylo-oligosaccharide, inulin, oligofructose and glucose. Besides the capability to grow on inulin and oligofructose containing media, a distinct high growth in beta-glucan based substrates and a low growth in (arabino)xylooligosaccharide containing media were evident for most bacteria tested. With the exception of B. subtilis and L. plantarum, other bacteria grew equally well or even better on different substrates than on glucose. The fermentation of studied carbohydrates by these micro-organisms was dominated by the production of acetic acid as the main short chain fatty acid.
Selected bacteria are able to ferment and grow on NDF and prebiotic carbohydrates but in a substrate dependent manner.
This study delivers a first screening of which NDF or prebiotic carbohydrates are the most promising for aquaculture feed supplementations
Crucial Role for Ecto-5âČ-Nucleotidase (CD73) in Vascular Leakage during Hypoxia
Extracellular adenosine has been widely implicated in adaptive responses to hypoxia. The generation of extracellular adenosine involves phosphohydrolysis of adenine nucleotide intermediates, and is regulated by the terminal enzymatic step catalyzed by ecto-5âČ-nucleotidase (CD73). Guided by previous work indicating that hypoxia-induced vascular leakage is, at least in part, controlled by adenosine, we generated mice with a targeted disruption of the third coding exon of Cd73 to test the hypothesis that CD73-generated extracellular adenosine functions in an innate protective pathway for hypoxia-induced vascular leakage. Cd73 (â/â) mice bred and gained weight normally, and appeared to have an intact immune system. However, vascular leakage was significantly increased in multiple organs, and after subjection to normobaric hypoxia (8% O(2)), Cd73 (â/â) mice manifested fulminant vascular leakage, particularly prevalent in the lung. Histological examination of lungs from hypoxic Cd73 (â/â) mice revealed perivascular interstitial edema associated with inflammatory infiltrates surrounding larger pulmonary vessels. Vascular leakage secondary to hypoxia was reversed in part by adenosine receptor agonists or reconstitution with soluble 5âČ-nucleotidase. Together, our studies identify CD73 as a critical mediator of vascular leakage in vivo
Applying case based reasoning for prioritizing areas of business management
Determining the importance of different management areas in a company provides guidance about the
needs of increasing the analysis and actions focuses in particular topic. To do it, it is necessary to decompose
the management in a coherent set of specific management areas and provide a way that allows the
company to determine the importance of these areas for them. This paper presents a novel system that
guides companies to obtain a classification of important management areas for them. It is focused on the
use of a case based reasoning system because the variability and the evolution of companies as time
passes requires using techniques with learning capabilities. The proposed system provides an automatic
self-assessment system that provides companies an ordered list of their most important management
areas. This system was implemented a year ago for the evaluation of Spanish companies. Currently, it
is in production providing relevant information about the management areas of these companies
Regge description of two pseudoscalar meson production in antiproton-proton annihilation
A Regge-inspired model is used to discuss the hard exclusive two-body
hadronic reactions (pbar p ----> pi+ pi-, pi0 pi0, K+ K-, Kbar0 K0) for the
FAIR facility project at GSI with the Panda detector. The comparison between
the differential cross sections predictions and the available data is shown to
determine the values of the few parameters of the model.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure
Realtime calibration of the A4 electromagnetic lead fluoride calorimeter
Sufficient energy resolution is the key issue for the calorimetry in particle
and nuclear physics. The calorimeter of the A4 parity violation experiment at
MAMI is a segmented calorimeter where the energy of an event is determined by
summing the signals of neighbouring channels. In this case the precise matching
of the individual modules is crucial to obtain a good energy resolution. We
have developped a calibration procedure for our total absorbing electromagnetic
calorimeter which consists of 1022 lead fluoride (PbF_2) crystals. This
procedure reconstructs the the single-module contributions to the events by
solving a linear system of equations, involving the inversion of a 1022 x
1022-matrix. The system has shown its functionality at beam energies between
300 and 1500 MeV and represents a new and fast method to keep the calorimeter
permanently in a well-calibrated state

FDG uptake, a surrogate of tumour hypoxia?
Introduction Tumour hyperglycolysis is driven by activation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) through tumour hypoxia. Accordingly, the degree of 2-fluro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake by tumours might indirectly reflect the level of hypoxia, obviating the need for more specific radiopharmaceuticals for hypoxia imaging.
Discussion In this paper, available data on the relationship between hypoxia and FDG uptake by tumour tissue in vitro and in vivo are reviewed. In pre-clinical in vitro studies, acute hypoxia was consistently shown to increase FDG uptake by normal and tumour cells within a couple of hours after onset with mobilisation or modification of glucose transporters optimising glucose uptake, followed by a delayed response with increased rates of transcription of GLUT mRNA. In pre-clinical imaging studies on chronic hypoxia that compared FDG uptake by tumours grown in rat or mice to uptake by FMISO, the pattern of normoxic and hypoxic regions within the human tumour xenografts, as imaged by FMISO, largely correlated with glucose metabolism although minor locoregional differences could not be excluded. In the clinical setting, data are limited and discordant.
Conclusion Further evaluation of FDG uptake by various tumour types in relation to intrinsic and bioreductive markers of hypoxia and response to radiotherapy or hypoxia-dependent drugs is needed to fully assess its application as a marker of hypoxia in the clinical setting
Evidence for Strange Quark Contributions to the Nucleon's Form Factors at = 0.108 (GeV/c)
We report on a measurement of the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic
scattering of polarized electrons off unpolarized protons with the A4 apparatus
at MAMI in Mainz at a four momentum transfer value of = \Qsquare
(GeV/c) and at a forward electron scattering angle of 30. The measured asymmetry is = (\Aphys
\Deltastat \Deltasyst) 10. The
expectation from the Standard Model assuming no strangeness contribution to the
vector current is A = (\Azero \DeltaAzero) 10. We
have improved the statistical accuracy by a factor of 3 as compared to our
previous measurements at a higher . We have extracted the strangeness
contribution to the electromagnetic form factors from our data to be +
\FakGMs = \GEsGMs \DeltaGEsGMs at = \Qsquare (GeV/c).
As in our previous measurement at higher momentum transfer for + 0.230
, we again find the value for + \FakGMs to be positive,
this time at an improved significance level of 2 .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A SIGNATURE FOR ISOSCALAR-SPIN TRANSITIONS IN ([d,d) SCATTERING
Three different signatures for isoscalar spin transitions in nuclei have been tested in the 12C(d,d)12C reaction at 400 MeV. These signatures have values close to zero for the natural parity states, and ranging from 0.22 to 0.50 for the ÎS=1 ÎT=0, 12.7 MeV state
