    The tail of the Jurassic fish Leedsichthys problematicus (Osteichthyes: Actinopterygii) collected by Alfred Nicholson Leeds - an example of the importance of historical records in palaeontology

    The specimen of the tail of <i>Leedsichthys problematicus</i>, now in The Natural History Museum, London, was one of the most spectacular fossil vertebrates from the Oxford Clay Formation of Peterborough, but as an isolated find it shares no bones in common with the holotype of the genus and species. However, a letter from Alfred Nicholson Leeds and related documents cast valuable new light on the excavation of the tail, indicating that it was discovered with cranial bones, gill-rakers, and two pectoral fins, thereby including elements that can potentially be compared with those of the holotype. The documents also clearly indicate that The Natural History Museum's specimen is not part of the same individual as any other numbered specimen of <i>Leedsichthys</i> as had been speculated on other occasions. The maximum size of the animal represented by The Natural History Museum's specimen was possibly around 9 metres, considerably less than previous estimates of up to 27.6 metres for <i>Leedsichthys</i>. Historical documentary evidence should therefore be rigorously checked both when studying historical specimens in science, and in preparing text for museum display labels

    Superelastic behavior and elastocaloric effect in a Ni51.5Fe21.5Ga27.0 ferromagnetic shape memory single crystal under compression

    Ni51.5Fe21.5Ga27.0 single crystals have been subjected to different heat treatments resulting in a different degree of L21 ordering. Superelastic response has been measured at different temperatures in compression mode. The mechanical behavior strongly depends on axis orientation. In the [001] direction, perfect superelasticity over a wide range of temperatures is found. For the [110] orientation, the material fails by brittle fracture short above austenite transformation finish temperature, Af. A linear dependence of the critical stress with temperature has been found in agreement with Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The slope does not significantly change with the degree of order, but it is notably affected by the crystal orientation. The microstructure of the samples after mechanical tests has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The superelastic cycling produces dislocations with a Burgers vector that suggests local microplastic deformation of the martensitic phase. Finally, the adiabatic temperature change has been used to chacterize the elastocaloric effect in this alloy. The adiabatic cooling is found to be larger in the [110] than in the [001] orientation at 240 K. However, the brittleness of [110] samples avoid testing the adiabatic temperature change at room temperature. The adiabatic cooling in [001] orientation decreases systematically with temperature, which is related to decrease of the strain and entropy change of transformation

    ResumenObjetivoDeterminar qué porcentaje de una población sin dolor anterior de rodilla tiene un test de Zohlen positivo, además determinar el ángulo Q de esta población y buscar si existe alguna relación entre la positividad del test de Zohlen y alteraciones en el ángulo Q.Material y métodoEstudio descriptivo-prospectivo observacional. Aplicación del test de Zohlen y medición del ángulo Q. La población se dividió en 2 grupos: test de Zohlen positivo y test de Zohlen negativo. Cuantificación y comparación de medias del ángulo Q en los dos grupos.Resultados90 sujetos evaluados, promedio de edad 20,18 años (18-40). Veinte sujetos (22,2%) con test de Zohlen positivo. Ángulo Q promedio en los sujetos con test de Zohlen negativo: 14,95°; ángulo Q promedio en los sujetos con test de Zohlen positivo: 16,9° (p < 0,05).Ángulo Q promedio en hombres con test de Zohlen negativo13,4°; ángulo Q promedio en hombres con test de Zohlen positivo: 16° (p < 0,05). Ángulo Q promedio en mujeres con test de Zohlen negativo: 16,5°; ángulo Q promedio en mujeres con test de Zohlen positivo: 18°, sin diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre ambos grupos.ConclusionesEl test de Zohlen tiene una correlación positiva con el ángulo Q en sujetos de sexo masculino. Dada la correlación entre un ángulo Q alterado y la presencia de dolor anterior de rodilla, en los pacientes que presentan un test de Zohlen positivo sin haber consultado por dolor anterior de rodilla, la prevención primaria de dolor anterior de rodilla puede ser de utilidad.AbstractObjectiveTo determine the percentage of a population without anterior knee pain with a positive Zohlen test, and also to determine the Q angle of this population and to determine if there is any relationship between the Zohlen test and Q angle anomalies.MethodsA prospective observational study was conducted in which Zohleńs test was applied and the Q angle was measured. The population was divided into 2 groups: Zohleńs positive and Zohleńs negative. Q angle was compared in the 2 groups.ResultsThe study included 90 subjects, with a mean age 20.18 years (18-40), of whom 20 subjects (22.2%) had positive Zohleńs test. The mean Q angle in subjects with negative Zohleńs test was 14.95°, and the mean Q angle in subjects with positive Zohleńs test was 16,9° (p<.05). The mean Q angle in men with negative Zohleńs test was 13.4°, and the mean Q angle in men with positive Zohleńs test was 16° (p < .05). The mean Q angle in women with negative Zohleńs test was 16.5°, with a mean Q angle of 18° in women with positive Zohleńs test, with no statistically significant differences found between groups.ConclusionsZohleńs test has a positive correlation with the Q angle in male subjects. Given the correlation between the Q angle and the presence of anterior knee pain in patients who have a positive test without symptoms, primary prevention of anterior knee pain can be achieved

    A Preliminary Study to Understand How Mainstream Accessibility and Digital Assistive Technologies Reaches People in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries

    Accessibility to mainstream digital devices and the use of Digital Assistive Technologies (Digital AT) facilitates participation and improves function and independece of people with disabilities in these regions. However, mainstream access is not fully realised in LMICs and there are multiple barriers in the way for the uptake and use of Digital AT. Through a thematic analysis of interviews with eight expert professionals in the domain of provisioning Digital AT and its related services in LMICs, we discuss five steps or barriers for the uptake and use of Digital AT and have identified three practical strategies that have shown evidence to overcome these barriers. Developers of Digital AT will find these insights useful and the same will provide an understanding of the market to business strategists to deliver pathways to better accessibility services and new Digital AT

    Novel Ligand-Based Approach to Screening of Large Databases for Paramphistomicide Lead Generation

    In this report, non-stochastic and stochastic 2D atom-based linear indices were used to the discrimination of paramphistomicide compounds from inactive ones. Two linear classification-based QSAR models were obtained. These equations, performed considering both non-stochastic and stochastic TOMOCOMD-CARDD descriptors, classify correctly 88.57% of chemicals in database, for a good Mathew’s correlation coefficient of 0.77. A few anthelmintics compounds and other drugs from the Merck Index, Negwer handbook, and Goodman & Gilman were selected/identified by the models as possible paramphistomicide, one of them was found in the recent literature as possessing this activity. The results demonstrate the usefulness of TOMOCOMD-CARDD method for drug discovery of new lead paramphistomicide compounds.En este informe se emplearon índices lineales estocásticos y no estocásticos en 2D, basados en átomos, para discriminar los compuestos de acción paramfistomicida de los inactivos. Se obtuvieron dos modelos lineales QSAR basados en la clasificación. Estas ecuaciones, llevadas a cabo teniendo en cuenta descriptores TOMOCOMD-CARDD tanto estocásticos como no estocásticos, clasifican correctamente el 88,57% de los elementos químicos de la base de datos, arrojando un buen coeficiente de correlación de Mathews del 0,77. Los modelos seleccionaron/identificaron algunos compuestos antihelmínticos y otros fármacos del índice Merck, del manual Negwer y de Goodman & Gilman como posibles paramfistomicidas, y la literatura reciente incluye a uno de ellos como poseedor de esta actividad. Los resultados demuestran la utilidad del método TOMOCOMD-CARDD para el descubrimiento de fármacos y de nuevos compuestos líderes de acción paramfistomicida.Ciencias Experimentale
