We demonstrate, by construction, that simple renormalizable matrix potentials with S_N, as opposed to O(N), symmetry can exhibit an exponentially large number of inequivalent deep local minima.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, 2 figures. Additional applications and references adde

Thorough investigation on the high-temperature polymorphism of dipentyl-perylenediimide: thermal expansion vs. polymorphic transition

N,N′-Dipentyl-3,4,9,10-perylendiimide (PDI-C5) is an organic semiconducting material which has been extensively investigated as model compound for its optoelectronic properties. It is known to be highly thermally stable, that it exhibits solid-state transitions with temperature and that thermal treatments lead to an improvement in its performance in devices. Here we report a full thermal characterization of PDI-C5 by combination of differential scanning calorimetry, variable temperature X-ray diffraction, hot stage microscopy, and variable temperature Raman spectroscopy. We identified two high temperature polymorphs, form II and form III, which form respectively at 112 °C and at 221 °C and we determined their crystal structure from powder data. Form II is completely reversible upon cooling with low hysteresis, while form III revealed a different thermal behaviour upon cooling depending on the technique and crystal size. The crystal structure features of the different polymorphs are discussed and compared, and we looked into the role of the perylene core and alkyl chains during solid-state transitions. The thermal expansion principal axis of PDI-C5 crystal forms is reported showing that all the reported forms possess negative thermal expansion (X1) and large positive thermal expansion (X3) which are correlated to thermal behaviour observed

Using SAR data for soil temperature regimes classifiction in São Paulo, Brazil.

The climatic variables are used in Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 1999) for soil classification, because it is important to plant germination and growth, soil formation and others soil properties. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry has been shown to be a very cost effective tool for measuring digital topography (Zyl, 2001). The data of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) were the results of an international mission that generate a digital elevation model (DEM) with high resolution (Souza Filho, 2003). The data were generate and provided for South America with 90m spatial resolution. The SRTM was in February, 2000 and produced the most complete terrain map of the world (Foni, Seal, 2004). A radar interferometer images a scene from two slightly different positions. In the case of a single-pass interferometer, such as SRTM, these images are acquired simultaneously. This means that one needs to separate the antenna systems in space, but always know the relative positions of the antennas in order to reconstruct the topography correctly (Zyl, 2001). The SRTM actually flew two interferometers, a C-band system, and a X-band system. The DEM generate by SRTM has a good accuracy, and besides a great advantage in the homogeneous DEM quality. Therefore, it can be used to estimate the air temperature using multiple regression analysis, based on geographic coordinates and altitude as independent variables (Pinto et al., 1972; Pedro Júnior et al., 1991; Marin et al., 2003). The Soil Taxonomy criteria to define soil temperature regimes consider soil temperature at a depth of 50cm from the soil surface, these data are rare in Brasil, and are poor to classify soil temperature regimes in brazilian territory, classifying the major portion of the country in isohyperthermic regime. The objective of this paper is present a new perspective to classify soil temperature regimes based in air temperature estimated from SRTM data, for São Paulo State

A Demonstration of LISA Laser Communication

Over the past few years questions have been raised concerning the use of laser communications links between sciencecraft to transmit phase information crucial to the reduction of laser frequency noise in the LISA science measurement. The concern is that applying medium frequency phase modulations to the laser carrier could compromise the phase stability of the LISA fringe signal. We have modified the table-top interferometer presented in a previous article by applying phase modulations to the laser beams in order to evaluate the effects of such modulations on the LISA science fringe signal. We have demonstrated that the phase resolution of the science signal is not degraded by the presence of medium frequency phase modulations.Comment: minor corrections found in the CQG versio
