    Probing Lorentz Invariance Violation with Neutrino Factories

    In this article we show the modification in the number of neutrino events (νμ+νˉμ\nu_\mu+\bar\nu_\mu) caused by Lorentz Invariant Violation (LIV), σ=5×1024\sigma=5\times 10^{-24} and 102310^{-23}, in neutrino oscillation for a neutrino factory at a distance of 7500 km. The momentum of the muons can vary from 10-50 GeV and we consider 2×10202\times 10^{20} decays per year. The modifications in the number of events caused by this σ\sigma LIV parameter could be a strong signal of new physics in a future neutrino factory.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures.     Scalar Dark Matter in light of LEP and ILC Experiments

    In this work we study a scalar field dark matter model with mass of the order of 100 MeV. We assume dark matter is produced in the process e+e+ϕ+ϕ+γe^-+e^+\to \phi +\phi^*+\gamma, that, in fact, could be a background for the standard process e+e+ν+νˉ+γe^-+e^+\to \nu +\bar\nu+\gamma extensively studied at LEP. We constrain the chiral couplings, CLC_L and CRC_R, of the dark matter with electrons through an intermediate fermion of mass mF=100m_F=100 GeV and obtain CL=0.1(0.25)C_L=0.1(0.25) and CR=0.25(0.1)C_R=0.25(0.1) for the best fit point of our χ2\chi^2 analysis. We also analyze the potential of ILC to detect this scalar dark matter for two configurations: (i) center of mass energy s=500\sqrt{s}=500 GeV and luminosity L=250\mathcal{L}=250 fb1^{-1}, and (ii) center of mass energy s=1\sqrt{s}=1 TeV and luminosity L=500\mathcal{L}=500 fb1^{-1}.     Quasi-Dirac neutrinos and solar neutrino data

    We present an analysis of the solar neutrino data in the context of a quasi-Dirac neutrino model in which the lepton mixing matrix is given at tree level by the tribimaximal matrix. When radiative corrections are taken into account, new effects in neutrino oscillations, as νeνs\nu_e \to \nu_s, appear. This oscillation is constrained by the solar neutrino data. In our analysis, we have found an allowed region for our two free parameters ϵ\epsilon and m1m_1. The radiative correction, ϵ\epsilon, can vary approximately from 5×1095\times 10^{-9} to 10610^{-6} and the calculated fourth mass eigenstate, m4m_4, 0.01 eV to 0.2 eV at 2σ\sigma level.     Using supernova neutrinos to monitor the collapse, to search for gravity waves and to probe neutrino masses

    We discuss the importance of observing supernova neutrinos. By analyzing the SN1987A observations of Kamiokande-II, IMB and Baksan, we show that they provide a 2.5{\sigma} support to the standard scenario for the explosion. We discuss in this context the use of neutrinos as trigger for the search of the gravity wave impulsive emission. We derive a bound on the neutrino mass using the SN1987A data and argue, using simulated data, that a future galactic supernova could probe the sub-eV region.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure.     Neutrino oscillations within the induced gravitational collapse paradigm of long gamma-ray bursts

    FAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOThe induced gravitational collapse paradigm of long gamma-ray bursts associated with supernovae (SNe) predicts a copious neutrino-antineutrino (nu(nu) over bar) emission owing to the hypercritical accretion process of SN ejecta onto a neutron star (NS) binary companion. The neutrino emission can reach luminosities of up to 10(57) MeV. s(-1), mean neutrino energies of 20 MeV, and neutrino densities of 10(31) cm(-3). Along their path from the vicinity of the NS surface outward, such neutrinos experience flavor transformations dictated by the neutrino-to-electron-density ratio. We determine the neutrino and electron on the accretion zone and use them to compute the neutrino flavor evolution. For normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies and within the two-flavor formalism (nu(e)nu(x)), we estimate the final electronic and nonelectronic neutrino content after two oscillation processes: (1) neutrino collective effects due to neutrino self-interactions where the neutrino density dominates, and (2) the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect, where the electron density dominates. We find that the final neutrino content is composed by similar to 55% (similar to 62%) of electronic neutrinos, i.e., nu(e) + (nu) over bar (e), for the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy.     Size dependence of the magnetic relaxation and specific power absorption in iron oxide nanoparticles

    We report on the magnetic and power absorption properties of a series of iron oxide nanoparticles with average sizes ranging from 3 to 23 nm, prepared by thermal decomposition of Iron(III) acetylacetonate in organic media. From the careful characterization of the magnetic and physicochemical properties of these samples, we were able to reproduce the specific power absorption (SPA) values experimentally found, as well as their dependence with particle size, using a simple model of Brownian and Neel Relaxation at ´ room temperature. SPA experiments in ac magnetic fields (0 = 13 kA/m and f = 250 kHz) indicated that the magnetic and rheological properties played the fundamental rule to determine the heating efficiency at different conditions. A maximum SPA value of 344 W/g was obtained for a sample containing nanoparticles with = 12 nm and dispersion σ = 0.25. The observed SPA dependence with particle diameter and their magnetic parameters indicated that, for the size range and experimental conditions of f and H studied in this work, both Neel and Brown relaxation mechanisms are important to the heat generation observed.Fil: Lima, Enio Junior.     Detection of Leishmania infantum DNA mainly in Rhipicephalus sanguineus male ticks removed from dogs living in endemic areas of canine leishmaniosis

    Background: Sand flies are the only biologically adapted vectors of Leishmania parasites, however, a possible role in the transmission of Leishmania has been proposed for other hematophagous ectoparasites such as ticks. In order to evaluate natural infection by Leishmania infantum in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks, taking into account its close association with dogs, 128 adult R. sanguineus ticks removed from 41 dogs living in endemic areas of canine leishmaniosis were studied. Methods: Individual DNA extraction was performed from each tick and whole blood taken from dogs. Dog sera were tested for IgG antibodies to L. infantum antigen by ELISA and L. infantum real-time PCR was performed from canine whole blood samples and ticks. Results: Leishmania infantum PCR was positive in 13 ticks (10.1%) including one female, (2.0%) and 12 males (15.2%), and in only five dogs (12.2%). Male ticks had a significantly higher infection rate when compared to female R. sanguineus. The percentage of L. infantum seroreactive dogs was 19.5%. All but two PCR positive dogs were seroreactive. Leishmania infantum PCR positive ticks were removed from seropositive and seronegative dogs with a variety of PCR results. Conclusions: This study demonstrates high prevalence of L. infantum DNA in R. sanguineus ticks removed from L. infantum seropositive and seronegative dogs. The presence of L. infantum DNA was detected mainly in male ticks possibly due to their ability to move between canine hosts and feed on several canine hosts during the adult life stage. Additional studies are needed to further explore the role of R. sanguineus ticks and in particular, male adults, in both the epidemiology and immunology of L. infantum infection in dogs in endemic areas

    Nutritional valuation of schoolchildren from three Ibero-American countries: A comparative analysis of the references proposed by International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and World Health Organization (WHO)

    Introducción: El índice de masa corporal (IMC) resulta un indicador útil para valorar la condición nutricional en la infancia y adolescencia. Si bien no existe consenso respecto a los valores o puntos de corte de IMC que deben utilizarse para la diagnosis del sobrepeso, la obesidad o la insuficiencia ponderal, las referencias propuestas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y la International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) son las más aceptadas. No obstante, existen discrepancias importantes en los resultados obtenidos en función de una u otra referencia. Objetivo: Analizar y comparar la condición nutricional de una muestra internacional a partir del IMC, mediante la aplicación simultánea de las referencias recomendadas por la IOTF y la OMS. Métodos: Se calculó el IMC de 1289 escolares de 10 a 13 años de México, Venezuela y España. A cada niño le fue atribuida una categoría nutricional (bajo peso, normopeso, sobrepeso y obesidad) utilizando el criterio de la IOTF (puntos de corte equivalentes a 18,5; 25 y 30 en adultos) y OMS (-1 DE: bajo peso + 1 DE: sobrepeso y +2 DE: obesidad). Las prevalencias de estado nutricional obtenidas por cada criterio fueron comparadas mediante la prueba de Chi-Cuadrado. Resultados: El porcentaje de escolares en cada una de las categorías nutricionales varió significativamente en función de la referencia empleada. La prevalencia de malnutrición por exceso o por defecto fue, en ambos sexos y en los tres países, superior al emplear los parámetros OMS. La referencia OMS evidenció un 10,9% menos de niños normonutridos y un 13,1% más de malnutridos que la IOTF. Discusión: Los resultados de esta investigación permiten inferir que la referencia propuesta por la OMS resulta ser más “preventiva” al momento de identificar individuos malnutridos. Se subraya la importancia de especificar los criterios empleados para la determinación del estado nutricional en los estudios de carácter epidemiológico, así como de contrastar las referencias empleadas para el diagnóstico. Conclusiones: Las referencias OMS para IMC sobrestiman la prevalencia de bajo peso, sobrepeso y obesidad en relación a los puntos de corte propuestos por el IOTF para el diagnóstico de la malnutrición.Introduction: Body Mass Index (BMI) is a useful tool for assessing nutritional status in childhood and adolescence. Although there is no consensus on BMI values or cutoffs to be used for the diagnosis of overweight, obesity and underweight references proposed by World Health Organization (WHO) and International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) are the most accepted. However, there are significant discrepancies in the results obtained in terms of either reference. Objective: To analyze and compare the nutritional status of an international sample from IMC, by simultaneous application of IOTF and WHO recommended references. Methods: 1289 schoolchildren’s BMI between 10 and 13 years of Mexico, Venezuela and Spain was estimated. Each child was assigned a nutritional category (underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese) using the IOTF criteria (points cut equivalent to 18,5, 25 and 30 in adults) and WHO (-1 SD: low weight +1 DE: overweight and +2 SD: obesity). The prevalence of nutritional status of each criterion was compared using the Chi-square test. Results: The percentage of students in each of the nutritional categories mottled significantly depending on the reference used. The prevalence of excess or defect malnutrition, in both sexes and in all three countries, was exceeded using the WHO parameters. WHO reference showed 10,9% less than well-nourished children and 13,1 % more malnourished than the IOTF. Discussion: The results of this research allow inferring that the reference proposed by WHO appears to be more “protecting” when identifying malnourished individuals. The importance of specifying the criteria for determination of nutritional status in epidemiologic studies, as well as to contrast the references used for diagnosis, is emphasized. Conclusions: The WHO BMI references overestimate the prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity in relation to the cutoff points proposed by the IOTF for diagnosing malnutrition.Fil: Bergel Sanchís, María Laura.
