HI Observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 2146
NGC 2146 is a peculiar spiral galaxy which is currently undergoing a major
burst of star formation and is immersed in a extended HI structure that has
morphological and kinematical resemblence to a strong tidal interaction. This
paper reports aperture synthesis observations carried out in the 21cm line with
the Very Large Array (VLA - The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is
operated by Associated Universities, Inc. under cooperative agreement with the
National Science Foundation.) of two fields positioned to optimally cover the
HI streams to the north and south of the galaxy, along with a 300 ft total
power spectral mapping program to recover the low surface brightness extended
emission. The observations reveal elongated streams of neutral hydrogen towards
both the north and the south of the optical galaxy extending out up to 6
Holmberg radii. The streams are not in the principle plane of rotation of the
galaxy, but instead are suggestive of a tidal interaction between NGC 2146 and
a LSB companion that was destroyed by the encounter and remains undetected at
optical wavelengths. Part of the southern stream is turning back to fall into
the main galaxy, where it will create a long-lived warp in the HI disk of NGC
2146. Analysis of the trajectory of the outlying gas suggests that the closest
encounter took place about 0.8 billion years ago and that infall of debris will
continue for a similar time span.Comment: To be published in A&
An experimental investigation of vortex breakdown on a delta wing
An experimental investigation of vortex breakdown on delta wings at high angles is presented. Thin delta wings having sweep angles of 70, 75, 80 and 85 degrees are being studied. Smoke flow visualization and the laser light sheet technique are being used to obtain cross-sectional views of the leading edge vortices as they break down. At low tunnel speeds (as low as 3 m/s) details of the flow, which are usually imperceptible or blurred at higher speeds, can be clearly seen. A combination of lateral and longitudinal cross-sectional views provides information on the three dimensional nature of the vortex structure before, during and after breakdown. Whereas details of the flow are identified in still photographs, the dynamic characteristics of the breakdown process were recorded using high speed movies. Velocity measurements were obtained using a laser Doppler anemometer with the 70 degree delta wing at 30 degrees angle of attack. The measurements show that when breakdown occurs the core flow transforms from a jet-like flow to a wake-like flow
Breast feeding practices and views among diabetic women: a retrospective cohort study
Objective:
to explore the pattern and experiences of breast-feeding practices among diabetic women.
Design:
retrospective cohort study using maternal records and postal questionnaires in a Baby-Friendly hospital.
Participants:
diabetic mothers including women with gestational diabetes, and type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus.
Findings:
from the total group of respondents, 81.9% intended to breast feed. The actual breast feeding rates were 81.9% at birth, 68.1% at 2 weeks and 28.7% at 6 months postpartum. Major themes that were identified from women's experiences included information and advice, support vs. pressure, classification and labelling, and expectations.
Conclusions:
more than two-thirds of the diabetic women intended to breast feed and actually did breast feed in this study. For both the total study population and the type 1 and 2 diabetics alone, more than half were still breast feeding at 2 weeks postpartum, and approximately one-third were still breast feeding at 6 months postpartum.
Implications for practice:
structured support, provided for women through Baby-Friendly initiatives, was appreciated by the diabetic women in this study. The extent to which this support influenced the highly successful breast feeding practices in this group of women needs focused investigation. The need for a delicate balancing act between pressure and advice in order to prevent coercion was noted.</p
Reiki practitioners’ perceptions of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the experience, practice and future of Reiki
Objectives: This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the experience, practice and future of Reiki in the UK, including the personal impact of the pandemic on practitioners and their work, practitioner perceptions of the future of the profession and Reiki delivery, and practitioner experiences and views of distant Reiki in comparison to hands on or near the body treatments.
Method: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was carried out with 10 Reiki practitioners. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: Three themes were identified: adapting and growing with the challenges of COVID-19, Reiki for individual and community resilience, and moving from the mainstream hands on to lesser known distant Reiki.
Conclusion: While the COVID-19 pandemic personally impacted Reiki practitioners, they focused on turning adversity into opportunity to overcome a sense of disconnectedness and social isolation by providing social support and promoting individual and community resilience. Practitioners focused on self-care, personal development and reaching out to the community. Personal Protective Equipment was perceived as necessary for infection control but a potential barrier to the client’s experience of Reiki. They saw value in adapting their practice as part of the future of the profession by utilising new technology and distant Reiki healing, but were clear this could not replace in person contact
An exploratory study of Hungarian university students’ sexual attitudes and behaviours
Sexual health is the integration of the somatic, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of sexual being that
may positively enrich personality (WHO, 1975). It includes not only the prevention of sexually transmitted
infections (STIs), unwanted and unplanned pregnancy, coercion, violence and discrimination, but also a
positive approach to sexuality (Edwards & Coleman, 2004). Given the apparent inadequacies of the global
approach to sexual health education (SHE) for young people (UNESCO, 2009), it is unsurprising that the
prevalence of STIs have increased worldwide (WHO, 2018). Although Hungary is still among the countries
with low HIV/STISs infection rate, sexually active young people are at higher risk of infection (Goodwin et
al., 2003; Gyarmathy, McNutt, et al., 2002; UnAIDS, 2018).peer-reviewe
