Quantitative assessment of people-oriented forestry in Bangladesh: A case study in the Tangail forest division

Correlation of non alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients of coronary artery disease
Background: In NAFLD, increase in factor VIII and a reduction of protein C leads to the progression from steatosis to cirrhosi. The aim was to study the correlation of NAFLD with other associated risk factors of CAD.Methods: A total number of 100 patients of coronary artery disease were assessed for presence of NAFLD, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome & diabetes by various laboratory tests.Results: 46% of the CAD patients were found to have NAFLD. 69.6% patients of NAFLD were in the age group of 40-60 years. 21.7% were above 60 years. 91.1% of NAFLD patients were males. Half of the NAFLD patients were diabetic. 21.7% of NAFLD patients were found to have a total cholesterol level >200. Triglyceride level was also high among these patients (58.7%). All the NAFLD patients had LDL <100. 52.2% of them had metabolic syndrome.Conclusions: The study showed a direct correlation between NAFLD & CAD. Metabolic syndrome, diabetes, increased total cholesterol & triglyceride level were also associated with increased risk for CAD. However LDL level was not found to be associated with NAFLD risk
A systematic study on the structural and optical properties of vertically aligned zinc oxide nanorods grown by high pressure assisted pulsed laser deposition technique
In this study, we synthesize high quality vertically aligned ZnO (VAZO) nanorods on silicon, sapphire, and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique at high growth pressure (0.3 Torr). Systematic changes in structural and optical properties of VAZO nanorods are studied by varying the substrate temperature (500–600 °C) and number of pulsed laser shots during the deposition. ZnO nanoparticles deposited at high pressure act as nucleation sites, eliminating requirement of catalyst to fabricate VAZO nanorods. Two sharp ZnO peaks with high intensity correspond to the (0002) and (0004) planes in X-ray diffraction pattern confirm the growth of ZnO nanorods, oriented along the c-axis. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images indicate a regular arrangement of vertically aligned hexagonal closed pack nano-structures of ZnO. The vertical alignment of ZnO nanorods is also supported by the presence of E2 (high) and A1 (LO) modes in Raman spectra. We can tune the diameter of VAZO nanorods by changing growth temperature and annealing environments. Photoluminescence spectroscopy illustrates reduction in defect level peak intensities with increase in diameter of VAZO nanorods. This study signifies that high pressure PLD technique can be used more efficiently for controlled and efficient growth of VAZO nanorods on different substrates
Traditional utilization of wild date palm (Phoenix sylvestris Roxb) in rural Bangladesh: An approach to sustainable biodiversity management
The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com.A study was conducted to explore the traditional utilization pattern and indigenous management practices of wild date palm (Phoenix sylvestris Roxb) in the rural agrarian regions of Bangladesh. A multistage sampling method with 10% intensity and a semi-structured questionnaire were used for the study. The farmers manage the palm mainly for sap production with which sugar based secondary goods are manufactured. The sap is either used fresh as drink or after some sort of processing as molasses and/or alcoholic beverage. Seven diversified sites support the palm as its habitat and most palms (20.40%) occur in orchards. Besides growing naturally, the palm is also established in orchards using the wildings as the staple planting material. Although the medium category farmers own most of the palms (33%), a considerable portion (28.68%) of it is managed by the landless farmers, who earn a substantial livelihood from the palms. The farmers practice their own indigenous wisdom in every stage of the palm’s maintenance from planting through tapping for sap collection to the processing of products. If managed more scientifically on a sustainable basis with the collaboration of farmers’ indigenous knowledge, this familiar palm could be able to support the rural economy of the country to a great extent. Transformational Leadership Style and School Transformation: The Case of Secondary Schools in Kuwait
In education, transformational leadership is an approach to human resource management (HRM) that emphasizes the need to alter an organization's operations to accomplish the desired results. The prosperity of a nation depends in part on the knowledge and education of its citizens, but some countries, such as Kuwait, have inadequate secondary education, resulting in poor outcomes. This document demonstrates the significance of school transformation in Kuwait, where the primary author resides. Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted to determine the most prevalent leadership style in secondary schools in Kuwait, the impact of transformational leadership on the transformation of secondary schools, and the factors that influence transformational leadership roles and practices in secondary schools. This investigation recommended that secondary schools in Kuwait overcome the challenges of transactional leadership and implement democratic, empowering, and non-authoritarian leadership styles so that teachers will be motivated and committed to an effective education process and schools will be transformed positively. This would contribute to realizing the country's Vision 2035 by stimulating the economy through the country's knowledgeable and educated citizens
Community-based fish culture in seasonal floodplains and irrigation systems
The overall objective of the project was to enhance fish production from seasonally
flooding areas and irrigation systems using a collective approach to fish culture. The
project sought to examine the institutions necessary to support community-approaches
to fish culture in a range of social, cultural and economic conditions, in Bangladesh,
Cambodia, China, Vietnam and Mali. Technical designs for fish culture were also tested,
building on successes achieved in earlier trials in Bangladesh, with an emphasis on
adapting the model to develop locally appropriate culture systems. The project showed
that the model is able to generate important benefits for communities in Bangladesh,
China and Mali, and may have the potential to so in other countries. However, it was
found that introducing fish culture into complex and dynamic institutional contexts,
whereby open access waters lie over private property required a range of social,
environmental and economic conditions to be in place for the adoption and continuance
of the fish culture model
