    Triple correlation for detection of damage-related nonlinearities in composite structures

    Nonlinear effects in vibration responses are investigated for the undamaged composite plate and the composite plate with a delamination. The analysis is focused on higher harmonic generation in vibration responses for various excitation amplitude levels. This effect is investigated using the triple correlation technique. The dynamics of composite plate was modelled using two-dimensional finite elements and the classical lamination theory. The doubled-node approach was used to model delamination area. Mode shapes and natural frequencies were estimated based on numerical models. Next, the delamination divergence analysis was used to obtain relative displacements for delaminated plies. Experimental modal analysis test was carried out to verify the numerical models. The two strongest vibration modes as well as two vibration modes with the smallest and largest motion level of delaminated plies were selected for nonlinear vibration test. The Fisher criterion was employed to verify the effectiveness and confidence level of the proposed technique. The results show that the method can be used not only to reveal nonlinearities, but also to reliably detect impact damage in composites. These results are confirmed using the statistical analysis

    Interaction of the ionic liquid [BMP][TFSA] with rutile TiO2(110) and coadsorbed lithium

    Aiming at a fundamental understanding of the processes at the electrode|ionic liquid interface in Li ion batteries, we investigated the interaction of the ionic liquid n-butyl-n-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BMP][TFSA] and of Li with a reduced rutile TiO2(110) (1 × 1) surface as well as the interaction between [BMP][TFSA] and Li on the TiO2(110) surface under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy. Between 80 K and 340 K [BMP][TFSA] adsorbs molecularly on the surface and at higher temperatures decomposition is observed, resulting in products such as Sad, Fad and TiNx. The decomposition pattern is compared to proposals based on theory. Small amounts of Li intercalate even at 80 K into TiO2(110), forming Li+ and Ti3+ species. The stoichiometry in the near surface region corresponds to Li7Ti5O12. For higher coverages in the range of several monolayers part of the Li remains on the surface, forming a Li2O cover layer. At 300 K, Ti3+ species become sufficiently mobile to diffuse into the bulk. Li post-deposition on a [BMP][TFSA] covered TiO2(110) surface at 80 K results in two competing reactions, Li intercalation and reaction with the IL, resulting in the decomposition of the IL. Upon warming up, the Ti3+ formed at low T is consumed by reaction with the IL adlayer and intermediate decomposition products. Post-deposition of [BMP][TFSA] (300 K) on a surface pre-covered with a Li2O/Li7Ti5O12 layer results in the partial reaction of [BMP][TFSA] with the Li+ and Ti3+ species, which gets completed at higher temperatures

    A recent Michigan case, Stone v. Stone, presents problems of complexity and far-reaching importance. The plaintiffs, husband and wife, each owned a one-half interest in a family business partnership, and each apparently reported a proportionate share of the partnership earnings for federal income tax purposes. For the purpose of further reducing taxes on the income of the family unit, each parent transferred a one-quarter interest in the partnership to one of their two minor children, and thereafter each parent and child filed separate income tax returns reporting one-fourth of the partnership earnings as individual income. Each parent, under a probate court appointment, acted as guardian for one of the children in accepting the transferred business interests. The United States Supreme Court then announced its decision in Commissioner v. Tower, and the Commissioner of Internal Revenue accordingly refunded the income taxes paid by the wife and children and ruled that since the father managed and controlled the business without any contribution of services by the wife and children, the entire partnership income for the year was taxable to the father. Because the total business income was then returnable by one person instead of four, the income came within a higher surtax bracket and greatly, increased the total tax, all payable by the father, who as an individual received only one-fourth of the total partnership income taxed to him. Conceding the correctness of the. commissioner\u27s determination, the plaintiffs brought action to set aside the gifts to the children. In the alternative, the father sought to recover from each guardianship estate the amount of the taxes refunded for the year, plus its pro rata share of the total increased tax. The guardian ad litem, who was a neutral guardian appointed in the instant proceeding, admitted the desirability of relief by way of rescission. The Supreme Court of Michigan affirmed a decree granting rescission of the transfers to the children, basing its decision on the premise that the plaintiffs had made the gifts under a mistake as to their antecedent and existing private legal rights

    Non-collinear magnetism in Al-Mn topologically disordered systems

    We have performed the first ab-initio calculations of a possible complex non-collinear magnetic structure in aluminium-rich Al-Mn liquids within the real-space tight-binding LMTO method. In our previous work we predicted the existence of large magnetic moments in Al-Mn liquids [A.M. Bratkovsky, A.V. Smirnov, D. N. Manh, and A. Pasturel, \prb {\bf 52}, 3056 (1995)] which has been very recently confirmed experimentally. Our present calculations show that there is a strong tendency for the moments on Mn to have a non-collinear (random) order retaining their large value of about 3~μB\mu_B. The d-electrons on Mn demonstrate a pronounced non-rigid band behaviour which cannot be reproduced within a simple Stoner picture.     Exchange interactions and Curie temperature in (GaMn)As

    We use supercell and frozen-magnon approaches to study the dependence of the magnetic interactions in (Ga,Mn)As on the Mn concentration. We report the parameters of the exchange interaction between Mn spins and the estimates of the Curie temperature within the mean-field and random-phase approximations. In agreement with experiment we obtain a nonmonotonous dependence of the Curie temperature on the Mn concentration. We estimate the dependence of the Curie temperature on the concentration of the carries in the system and show that the decrease of the number of holes in the valence band leads to fast decrease of the Curie temperature. We show that the hole states of the valence band are more efficient in mediating the exchange interaction between Mn spins than the electron states of the conduction band

    The lncRNA landscape of breast cancer reveals a role for DSCAM-AS1 in breast cancer progression.

    Molecular classification of cancers into subtypes has resulted in an advance in our understanding of tumour biology and treatment response across multiple tumour types. However, to date, cancer profiling has largely focused on protein-coding genes, which comprise <1% of the genome. Here we leverage a compendium of 58,648 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) to subtype 947 breast cancer samples. We show that lncRNA-based profiling categorizes breast tumours by their known molecular subtypes in breast cancer. We identify a cohort of breast cancer-associated and oestrogen-regulated lncRNAs, and investigate the role of the top prioritized oestrogen receptor (ER)-regulated lncRNA, DSCAM-AS1. We demonstrate that DSCAM-AS1 mediates tumour progression and tamoxifen resistance and identify hnRNPL as an interacting protein involved in the mechanism of DSCAM-AS1 action. By highlighting the role of DSCAM-AS1 in breast cancer biology and treatment resistance, this study provides insight into the potential clinical implications of lncRNAs in breast cancer
