A new stochastic differential equation approach for waves in a random medium
We present a mathematical approach that simplifies the theoretical treatment
of electromagnetic localization in random media and leads to closed form
analytical solutions. Starting with the assumption that the dielectric
permittivity of the medium has delta-correlated spatial fluctuations, and using
the Ito lemma, we derive a linear stochastic differential equation for a one
dimensional random medium. The equation leads to localized wave solutions. The
localized wave solutions have a localization length that scales inversely with
the square of the frequency of the wave in the low frequency regime, whereas in
the high frequency regime, this length varies inversely with the frequency to
the power of two thirds
Ab initio prediction of magnetically dead layers in freestanding -Ce(111)
It is well known that the surface of nonmagnetic -Ce is magnetically
ordered, i.e., -like. One then might conjecture, in agreement with
previous theoretical predictions, that the -Ce may also exhibit at its
surfaces even more strongly enhanced -like magnetic ordering.
Nonetheless, our result shows that the (111)-surfaces of magnetic -Ce
are neither spin nor orbitally polarized, i.e., -like. Therefore, we
predict, in contrast to the nonmagnetic -phase which tends to produce
magnetically ordered -like thin layers at its free surfaces, the
magnetic -phase has a tendency to form -like dead layers. This
study, which explains the suppressed (promoted) surface magnetic moments of
-Ce (-Ce), shows that how nanoscale can reverse physical
properties by going from bulk to the surface in isostructural - and
-phases of cerium. We predict using our freestanding surface results
that a typical unreactive and non-diffusive substrate can dramatically
influence the magnetic surface of cerium thin films in contrast to most of the
uncorrelated thin films and strongly correlated transition metals. Our result
implies that magnetic surface moments of -Ce(111) can be suddenly
disappeared by increasing lattice mismatch at the interface of a typical
unreactive and non-diffusive substrate with cerium overlayers.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Reflections about the sustainability of earth construction
In the last years earth construction has been receiving increasing attention from the scientific community,
which is partially related to the sustainable potential of this kind of construction. Nevertheless, in our own
country earth construction is still being seen as unworthy and perceived with mixed feelings. In a country
which possesses optimal conditions for its use this picture is some what a paradox. This manuscript intent
to focus on the sustainability advantages of earth construction, as a way to convince not only the
professionals of the construction sector as well as society itself about the importance of this kind of
construction
Compressive strength and durability properties of ceramic wastes based concrete
This paper presents an experimental study
on the properties and on the durability of concrete containing ceramic wastes. Several concrete mixes possessing a target mean compressive strength of 30 MPa were prepared with 20% cement replacement
by ceramic powder (W/B = 0.6). A concrete mix with ceramic sand and granite aggregates were also prepared as well as a concrete mix with natural sand and coarse ceramic aggregates (W/B = 0.5). The
mechanical and durability performance of ceramic waste based concrete are assessed by means of mechanical tests, water performance, permeability,
chloride diffusion and also accelerated aging tests. Results show that concrete with partial cement replacement by ceramic powder although it has minor strength loss possess increase durability performance.
Results also shows that concrete mixtures
with ceramic aggregates perform better than the control concrete mixtures concerning compressive strength, capillarity water absorption, oxygen permeability
and chloride diffusion. The replacement of
cement and aggregates in concrete by ceramic wastes will have major environmental benefits
Eco-concretes with sensing ability: state-of-the-art and research needs
Eco-friendly smart concrete combine the sustainable characteristics of waste based concrete and at the
same time possess a sensing ability acting as “intelligent” materials. The smart functions of these new
materials may include strain sensing (for structural vibration control or traffic monitoring), damage
sensing (for structural health monitoring), temperature sensing, electromagnetic interference shielding,
self-heating (by heating to prevent freezing) and cathodic protection in order to avoid reinforcement
corrosion. The current manuscript presents a literature review about these materials. Topics for future
investigations in this field are suggested
Cementitious building materials reinforced with vegetable fibres : a review
The construction industry is responsible for the depletion of large amounts of non renewable resources. This activity generates not only millions of tons of mineral waste but also millions of tons of carbon dioxide gas emissions. Therefore, research about building materials based on renewable resources like vegetable fibres is needed. This paper discusses the use of vegetable fibres as reinforcement in cement based materials. It includes fibre characteristics, properties and the description of the treatments that improve their performance; it covers the compatibility between the fibres and the cement matrix and also how the fibres influence cement properties. It also includes the properties and durability performance of cementitious materials reinforced with vegetable fibres. Furthermore future research trends are also suggested
