    Non-Standard Time Reversal for Particle Multiplets and the Spin-Flavor Structure of Hadrons

    We show that a system of quarks interacting with chiral fields provides a physical representation of a ``non-standard'' time reversal for particle multiplets proposed by Weinberg.     Formation of Quark Phases in compact stars and their connection to Gamma-Ray-Bursts

    We analyse the occurrence of quiescent times in the temporal structure of the Gamma-Ray-Bursts (GRBs) light curves. We show that if a long quiescent time is present, it is possible to divide the total duration of GRBs into three periods: the pre-quiescence emission, the quiescent time and the post-quiescence emission. We then discuss a model of the GRBs inner engine based on the formation of quark phases during the life of an hadronic star. Within this model the pre-quiescence emission is interpreted as due to the deconfinement of quark inside an hadronic star and the formation of 2SC quark matter. The post-quiescence emission is due to the conversion of 2SC into the Color-Flavor-Locking (CFL) phase. The temporal delay between these two processes is connected with the nucleation time of the CFL phase in the 2SC phase and it can be associated with the observed quiescent times in the GRBs light curves.     A 1.2V 10μW NPN-Based Temperature Sensor in 65nm CMOS with an inaccuracy of ±0.2°C (3s) from −70°C to 125°C

    This paper describes a temperature sensor realized in a 65nm CMOS process with a batch-calibrated inaccuracy of ±0.5°C (3σ) and a trimmed inaccuracy of ±0.2°C (3σ) from –70°C to 125°C. This represents a 10-fold improvement in accuracy compared to other deep-submicron temperature sensors [1,2], and is comparable with that of state-of-the-art sensors implemented in larger-featuresize processes [3,4]. The sensor draws 8.3μA from a 1.2V supply and occupies an area of 0.1mm2, which is 45 times less than that of sensors with comparable accuracy [3,4]. These advances are enabled by the use of NPN transistors as sensing elements, the use of dynamic techniques i.e. correlated double sampling (CDS) and dynamic element matching (DEM), and a single room-temperature trim

    A 65 nm CMOS 2.4 GHz wake-up receiver operating with low-accuracy frequency references has been realized. Robustness to frequency inaccuracy is achieved by employing non-coherent energy detection, broadband-IF heterodyne architecture and impulse-radio modulation. The radio dissipates 415 ¿W at 500 kb/s and achieves a sensitivity of -82 dBm with an energy efficiency of 830 pJ/bit.\u

    Law, human capital, and the emergence of free city-states in medieval Italy

    In this paper, we study how the birth of the first universities in Italy affected the emergence of the Italian free cities-states (the commune) in the period 1000-1300 a.d. Exploiting a panel dataset of 121 cities, we show that after the foundation of a new university the distance between each city in the sample and the university negatively predicts the timing of the birth of communal institutions in the city. Our evidence is consistent with the idea that universities in the Middle Ages provided the necessary juridical knowledge and skills to build legal capacity and develop broader-based institutions.This paper considers how the foundation of the first universities in Italy affected the emergence of free city-states (the communes) in the period 1000-1300 CE. Exploiting a panel dataset of 121 cities, we show that the time variant distance of the sample cities to their closest university is inversely correlated with the probability of their transition to communal institutions. Our evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that the medieval universities provided the useful juridical knowledge and skills for building legal capacity and developing communal institutions

    Effectiveness evaluation of STOL transport operations

    A short-takeoff and landing (STOL) systems simulation model has been developed and implemented in a computer code (known as STOL OPS) which permits evaluation of the operation of a STOL aircraft and its avionics in a commercial airline operating environment. STOL OPS concentrated on the avionics functions of navigation, guidance, control, communication, hazard aviodance, and systems management. External world factors influencing the operation of the STOL aircraft include each airport and its geometry, air traffic at each airport, air traffic control equipment and procedures, weather (including winds and visibility), and the flight path between each airport served by the route. The development of the STOL OPS program provides NASA a set of computer programs which can be used for detailed analysis of a STOL aircraft and its avionics and permit establishment of system requirements as a function of airline mission performance goals
