    The XMM-Newton Detection of Diffuse Inverse Compton X-rays from Lobes of the FR-II Radio Galaxy 3C98

    The XMM-Newton observation of the nearby FR-II radio galaxy 3C 98 is reported. In two exposures on the target, faint diffuse X-ray emission associated with the radio lobes was significantly detected, together with a bright X-ray active nucleus, of which the 2 -- 10 keV intrinsic luminosity is (4 -- 8) \times 10^{42} erg s-1. The EPIC spectra of the northern and southern lobes are reproduced by a single power law model modified by the Galactic absorption, with a photon index of 2.2-0.5+0.6 and 1.7-0.6+0.7 respectively. These indices are consistent with that of the radio synchrotron spectrum, 1.73 +- 0.01 The luminosity of the northern and southern lobes are measured to be 8.3-2.6+3.3 \times 10^{40} erg s-1 and 9.2-4.3+5.7 \times 10^{40} erg s-1, respectively, in the 0.7 -- 7 keV range. The diffuse X-ray emission is interpreted as an inverse-Compton emission, produced when the synchrotron-emitting energetic electrons in the lobes scatter off the cosmic microwave background photons. The magnetic field in the lobes is calculated to be about 1.7 \mu G, which is about 2.5 times lower than the value estimated under the minimum energy condition. The energy density of the electrons is inferred to exceed that in the magnetic fields by a factor of 40 -- 50.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Radio Jet-Ambient Medium Interactions on Parsec Scales in the Blazar 1055+018

    As part of our study of the magnetic fields of AGN we have recently observed a large sample of blazars with the Very Long Baseline Array. Here we report the discovery of a striking two-component jet in the source 1055+018, consisting of an inner spine with a transverse magnetic field, and a fragmentary but distinct boundary layer with a longitudinal magnetic field. The polarization distribution in the spine strongly supports shocked-jet models while that in the boundary layer suggests interaction with the surrounding medium.     Direct Distance Measurements to Superluminal Radio Sources

    We present a new technique for directly measuring the distances to superluminal radio sources. By comparing the observed proper motions of components in a parsec scale radio jet to their measured Doppler factors, we can deduce the distance to the radio source independent of the standard rungs in the cosmological distance ladder. This technique requires that the jet angle to the line of sight and the ratio of pattern to flow velocities are sufficiently constrained. We evaluate a number of possibilities for constraining these parameters and demonstrate the technique on a well defined component in the parsec scale jet of the quasar 3C279 (z = 0.536). We find an angular size distance to 3C279 of greater than 1.8 (+0.5,-0.3) n^{1/8} Gpc, where n is the ratio of the energy density in the magnetic field to the energy density in the radiating particles in that jet component. For an Einstein-de Sitter Universe, this measurement would constrain the Hubble constant to be H < 65 n^{-1/8} km/s/Mpc at the two sigma level.     An X-ray and Optical Investigation of the Environments Around Nearby Radio Galaxies

    Investigations of the cluster environment of radio sources have not shown a correlation between radio power and degree of clustering. However, it has been demonstrated that extended X-ray luminosity and galaxy clustering do exhibit a positive correlation. This study investigates a complete sample of 25 nearby (z less than 0.06) radio galaxies which are not cataloged members of Abell clusters. The environment of these radio galaxies is studied in both the X-ray and the optical by means of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), ROSAT pointed observations, and the Palomar optical Digitized Sky Survey (DSS). X-ray luminosities and extents are determined from the RASS, and the DSS is used to quantify the degree of clustering via the spatial two-point correlation coefficient, Bgg. Of the 25 sources, 20 are greater than sigma detections in the X-ray and 11 possessed Bgg's significantly in excess of that expected for an isolated galaxy. Adding the criterion that the X-ray emission be resolved, 10 of the radio galaxies do appear to reside in poor clusters with extended X-ray emission suggestive of the presence of an intracluster medium. Eight of these galaxies also possess high spatial correlation coefficients. Taken together, these data suggest that the radio galaxies reside in a low richness extension of the Abell clusters. The unresolved X-ray emission from the other galaxies is most likely associated with AGN phenomena. Furthermore, although the sample size is small, it appears that the environments of FR I and FR II sources differ. FR I's tend to be more frequently associated with extended X-ray emission (10 of 18), whereas FR II's are typically point sources or non-detections in the X-ray (none of the 7 sources exhibit extended X-ray emission).Comment: 28 page postscript file including figures and tables, plus one landscape table and 5 GIF figure

    Integrated quantum photonics is an appealing platform for quantum information processing, quantum communication and quantum metrology. In all these applications it is necessary not only to be able to create and detect Fock states of light but also to program the photonic circuits that implements some desired logical operation. Here we demonstrate a reconfigurable controlled two-qubit operation on a chip using a multiwaveguide interferometer with a tunable phase shifter. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment, with a 0.98 \pm 0.02 average similarity between measured and ideal operations

    Quantifying the anisotropy in the infrared emission of powerful AGN

    We use restframe near- and mid-IR data of an isotropically selected sample of quasars and radio galaxies at 1.0 \leq z \leq 1.4, which have been published previously, to study the wavelength-dependent anisotropy of the IR emission. For that we build average SEDs of the quasar subsample (= type 1 AGN) and radio galaxies (= type 2 AGN) from ~1-17 {\mu}m and plot the ratio of both average samples. From 2 to 8 {\mu}m restframe wavelength the ratio gradually decreases from 20 to 2 with values around 3 in the 10{\mu}m silicate feature. Longward of 12{\mu}m the ratio decreases further and shows some high degree of isotropy at 15 {\mu}m (ratio ~1.4). The results are consistent with upper limits derived from the X-ray/mid-IR correlation of local Seyfert galaxies. We find that the anisotropy in our high-luminosity radio-loud sample is smaller than in radio-quiet lower-luminosity AGN which may be interpreted in the framework of a receding torus model with luminosity-dependent obscuration properties.     The Evolution of the Stellar Hosts of Radio Galaxies

    We present new near-infrared images of z>0.8 radio galaxies from the flux-limited 7C-III sample of radio sources for which we have recently obtained almost complete spectroscopic redshifts. The 7C objects have radio luminosities about 20 times fainter than 3C radio galaxies at a given redshift. The absolute magnitudes of the underlying host galaxies and their scale sizes are only weakly dependent on radio luminosity. Radio galaxy hosts at z~2 are significantly brighter than the hosts of radio-quiet quasars at similar redshifts and the model AGN hosts of Kauffmann & Haehnelt (2000). There is no evidence for strong evolution in scale size, which shows a large scatter at all redshifts. The hosts brighten significantly with redshift, consistent with the passive evolution of a stellar population that formed at z>~3. This scenario is consistent with studies of host galaxy morphology and submillimeter continuum emission, both of which show strong evolution at z>~2.5. The lack of a strong ``redshift cutoff'' in the radio luminosity function to z>4 suggests that the formation epoch of the radio galaxy host population lasts >~1Gyr from z>~5 to z~3. We suggest these facts are best explained by models in which the most massive galaxies and their associated AGN form early due to high baryon densities in the centres of their dark matter haloes.Comment: To appear in A

    Chandra Observations of 3C Radio Sources with z<0.3: Nuclei, Diffuse Emission, Jets and Hotspots

    We report on our Chandra Cycle 9 program to observe half of the 60 (unobserved by Chandra) 3C radio sources at z<0.3 for 8 ksec each. Here we give the basic data: the X-ray intensity of the nuclei and any features associated with radio structures such as hot spots and knots in jets. We have measured fluxes in soft, medium and hard bands and are thus able to isolate sources with significant intrinsic column density. For the stronger nuclei, we have applied the standard spectral analysis which provides the best fit values of X-ray spectral index and column density.
