Introduction. Sports activities play an important role in today’s society. However, as more people become involved in these activities, the number of sports-related injuries also increases. In the Netherlands, 3.5 million sports injuries occur annually. Twenty per cent of these injuries are first seen by a GP. Little is known about the epidemiology of these injuries in general practice. This study has been conducted to determine the incidence and prevalence of sports-related injuries in general practice and to provide information about the nature and treatment of these injuries

Olivine Composition of the Mars Trojan 5261 Eureka: Spitzer IRS Data

The largest Mars trojan, 5261 Eureka, is one of two prototype "Sa" asteroids in the Bus-Demeo taxonomy. Analysis of its visible/near-IR spectrum led to the conclusion that it might represent either an angritic analog or an olivine-rich composition such as an R chondrite. Spitzer IRS data (5-30 micrometers) have enabled us to resolve this ambiguity. The thermal-IR spectrum exhibits strong olivine reststrahlen features consistent with a composition of approximately equals Fo60-70. Laboratory spectra of R chondrites, brachinites, and chassignites are dominated by similar features

First-principles envelope-function theory for lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures

In this paper a multi-band envelope-function Hamiltonian for lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures is derived from first-principles norm-conserving pseudopotentials. The theory is applicable to isovalent or heterovalent heterostructures with macroscopically neutral interfaces and no spontaneous bulk polarization. The key assumption -- proved in earlier numerical studies -- is that the heterostructure can be treated as a weak perturbation with respect to some periodic reference crystal, with the nonlinear response small in comparison to the linear response. Quadratic response theory is then used in conjunction with k.p perturbation theory to develop a multi-band effective-mass Hamiltonian (for slowly varying envelope functions) in which all interface band-mixing effects are determined by the linear response. To within terms of the same order as the position dependence of the effective mass, the quadratic response contributes only a bulk band offset term and an interface dipole term, both of which are diagonal in the effective-mass Hamiltonian. Long-range multipole Coulomb fields arise in quantum wires or dots, but have no qualitative effect in two-dimensional systems beyond a dipole contribution to the band offsets.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, RevTeX4; v3: final published versio

Expression of Semaphorin-3A and its receptors in endochondral ossification: potential role in skeletal development and innervation.

Bone tissue is densely innervated, and there is increasing evidence for a neural control of bone metabolism. Semaphorin-3A is a very important regulator of neuronal targeting in the peripheral nervous system as well as in angiogenesis, and knockout of the Semaphorin-3A gene induces abnormal bone and cartilage development. We analyzed the spatial and temporal expression patterns of Semaphorin-3A signaling molecules during endochondral ossification, in parallel with the establishment of innervation. We show that osteoblasts and chondrocytes differentiated in vitro express most members of the Semaphorin-3A signaling system (Semaphorin-3A, Neuropilin-1, and Plexins-A1 and -A2). In vitro, osteoclasts express most receptor chains but not the ligand. In situ, these molecules are all expressed in the periosteum and by resting, prehypertrophic and hypertrophic chondrocytes in ossification centers before the onset of neurovascular invasion. They are detected later in osteoblasts and also osteoclasts, with differences in intensity and regional distribution. Semaphorin-3A and Neuropilin-1 are also expressed in the bone marrow. Plexin-A3 is not expressed by bone cell lineages in vitro. It is detected early in the periosteum and hypertrophic chondrocytes. After the onset of ossification, this chain is restricted to a network of cell processes in close vicinity to the cells lining the trabeculae, similar to the pattern observed for neural markers at the same stages. After birth, while the density of innervation decreases, Plexin-A3 is strongly expressed by blood vessels on the ossification front. In conclusion, Semaphorin-3A signaling is present in bone and seems to precede or coincide at the temporal but also spatial level with the invasion of bone by blood vessels and nerve fibers. Expression patterns suggest Plexin-A3/Neuropilin-1 as a candidate receptor in target cells for the regulation of bone innervation by Semaphorin-3A

Network organizations of general practitioners: antecedents of formation and consequences of participation

BACKGROUND: Network forms of organization are increasingly popular in primary care. At the end of the 1990s General Practitioners (GPs) in Italy were given the opportunity to adopt network forms of organization with the aim of improving the quality of their services. However factors affecting GPs' choices to join a network and the consequences of network membership have not been evaluated. METHODS: Administrative data of a Local Health Authority in Central Italy were analyzed using statistical methods at individual and dyadic levels of analysis. RESULTS: Homophily factors seem to influence a GP's choice of network. The consequences of network membership on GP performances seem very limited. CONCLUSIONS: When considering to foster the diffusion of network organizational forms in health care creating a network structure, like that of Italian GPs, is not sufficient. Other features of the implementation phase, work organization and human resource management should also be considered

Excitation-assisted inelastic processes in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We find that inelastic collisional processes in Bose-Einstein condensates induce local variations of the mean-field interparticle interaction and are accompanied by the creation/annihilation of elementary excitation. The physical picture is demonstrated for the case of three body recombination in a trapped condensate. For a high trap barrier the production of high energy trapped single particle excitations results in a strong increase of the loss rate of atoms from the condensate.Comment: 4 pages, no figure

Quantitative trait loci with sex-specific effects for internal organs weights and hematocrit value in a broiler-layer cross.

Abstract Rapid growth in broilers is associated with susceptibility to metabolic disorders such as pulmonary hypertension syndrome (ascites) and sudden death. This study describes a genome search for QTL associated with relative weight of cardio respiratory and metabolically important organs (heart, lungs, liver and gizzard), and hematocrit value in a Brazilian broiler-layer cross. QTL with similar or different effects across sexes were investigated. At 42 days of age after fasted for 6 h, the F2 chickens were weighed and slaughtered. Weights and percentages of the weight relative to BW42 of gizzard, heart, lungs, liver and hematocrit were used in the QTL search. Parental, F1 and F2 individuals were genotyped with 128 genetic markers (127 microsatellites and 1 SNP) covering 22 linkage groups. QTL mapping analyses were carried out using mixed models. A total of 11 genome-wide significant QTL and five suggestive linkages were mapped. Thus, genomewide significant QTL with similar effects across sexes were mapped to GGA2, 4 and 14 for heart weight, and to GGA2, 8 and 12 for gizzard %. Additionally, five genome-wide significant QTL with different effects across sexes were mapped to GGA 8, 19 and 26 for heart weight; GGA26 for heart % and GGA3 for hematocrit value. Five QTL were detected in chromosomal regions where QTL for similar traits were previously mapped in other F2 chicken populations. Seven novel genome-wide significant QTL are reported here, and 21 positional candidate genes in QTL regions were identified

The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis test maintains its diagnostic and prognostic performance in alcohol-related liver disease: a cohort study

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is the main cause of chronic liver disease. The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) test is a serological biomarker for fibrosis staging in chronic liver disease, however its utility in alcohol-related liver disease warrants further validation. We assessed the diagnostic and prognostic performance of ELF in alcohol-related liver disease. METHODS: Observational cohort study assessing paired ELF and histology from 786 tertiary care patients with chronic liver disease due to alcohol (n = 81) and non-alcohol aetiologies (n = 705). Prognostic data were available for 64 alcohol patients for a median of 6.4 years. Multiple ELF cut-offs were assessed to determine diagnostic utility in moderate fibrosis and cirrhosis. Survival data were assessed to determine the ability of ELF to predict liver related events and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: ELF identified cirrhosis and moderate fibrosis in alcohol-related liver disease independently of aminotransferase levels with areas under receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.895 (95% CI 0.823-0.968) and 0.923 (95% CI 0.866-0.981) respectively, which were non-inferior to non-alcohol aetiologies. The overall performance of ELF was assessed using the Obuchowski method: in alcohol = 0.934 (95% CI 0.908-0.960); non-alcohol = 0.907 (95% CI 0.895-0.919). Using ELF < 9.8 to exclude and ≧ 10.5 to diagnose cirrhosis, 87.7% of alcohol cases could have avoided biopsy, with sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 85%. A one-unit increase in ELF was associated with a 2.6 (95% CI 1.55-4.31, p < 0.001) fold greater odds of cirrhosis at baseline and 2.0-fold greater risk of a liver related event within 6 years (95% CI 1.39-2.99, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: ELF accurately stages liver fibrosis independently of transaminase elevations as a marker of inflammation and has superior prognostic performance to biopsy in alcohol-related liver disease
