SAOLIM, a prototype of a low cost System for Adaptive Optics with Lucky Imaging
A prototype of a low cost Adaptive Optics (AO) system has been developed at
the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia (CSIC) and tested at the 2.2m
telescope of the Calar Alto observatory. We present here the status of the
project, which includes the image stabilization system and compensation of high
order wavefront aberrations with a membrane deformable mirror. The image
stabilization system consists of magnet driven tip-tilt mirror. The higher
order compensation system comprises of a Shack-Hartmann sensor, a membrane
deformable mirror with 39 actuators and the control computer that allows
operations up to 420Hz in closed loop mode. We have successfully closed the
high order AO loop on natural guide stars. An improvement of 4 times in terms
of FWHM was achieved. The description and the results obtained on the sky are

The role of excitons and trions on electron spin polarization in quantum wells
We have studied the time evolution of the electron spin polarization under
continuous photoexcitation in remotely n-doped semiconductor quantum wells. The
doped region allows us to get the necessary excess of free electrons to form
trions. We have considered electron resonant photoexcitation at free, exciton
and trion electron energy levels. Also, we have studied the relative effect of
photoexcitation energy density and doping concentration. In order to obtain the
two-dimensional density evolution of the different species, we have performed
dynamic calculations through the matrix density formalism. Our results indicate
that photoexcitation of free electron level leads to a higher spin
polarization. Also, we have found that increasing the photoexcitation energy or
diminishing the doping enhances spin polarization.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures, 1 tabl
Trion dynamics in coupled double quantum wells. Electron density effects
We have studied the coherent dynamics of injected electrons when they are
either free or bounded both in excitons and in trions (charged excitons). We
have considered a remotely doped asymmetric double quantum well where an excess
of free electrons and the direct created excitons generate trions. We have used
the matrix density formalism to analyze the electron dynamics for different
concentration of the three species. Calculations show a significant
modification of the free electron inter-sublevel oscillations cWe have studied
the coherent dynamics of injected electrons when they are aused by electrons
bound in excitons and trions. Based on the present calculations we propose a
method to detect trions through the emitted electromagnetic radiation or the

Negative lateral conductivity of hot electrons in a biased superlattice
Nonequilibrium electron distribution in a superlattice subjected to a
homogeneous electric field (biased superlattice with equipopulated levels) is
studied within the tight-binding approximation, taking into account the
scattering by optical and acoustic phonons and by lateral disorder. It is found
that the distribution versus the in-plane kinetic energy depends essentially on
the ratio between the Bloch energy and the optical phonon energy. The in-plane
conductivity is calculated for low-doped structures at temperatures 4.2 K and
20 K. The negative conductivity is found for bias voltages corresponding to the
Bloch-phonon resonance condition.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

Flipping the Tortilla: Social-ecological innovations and traditional ecological knowledge for more sustainable agri-food systems in Spain
The conventional dominant global agri-food system is a main driver in the Anthropocene: food production entails profound global environmental changes from greenhouse gas emissions to biodiversity loss, and shifting diets further impact planetary and human health. Innovative approaches are needed to shift towards more sustainable, equitable and healthy agri-food systems. Building on the increasing recognition of the relevance of traditional agroecological knowledge (TAeK) in sustainable food systems, this paper aims to describe innovative agri-food initiatives and explore how the use and valorization of TAeK may transform conventional agri-food systems. It employs a case-study approach in Spain, where we conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 representatives of alternative agri-food initiatives. We found that, to promote sustainable agri-food systems, TAeK has to span from farm-to-fork. Innovative agroecological practices and knowledge help to safeguard biocultural diversity, while gastronomic knowledge among consumers on how to process and prepare local varieties and species is crucial for the implementation of shorter value chains. We discuss how TAeK enhances the success of conventional systems of innovation, challenging dominant epistemological frameworks. By scaling deep (changing values), scaling out (dissemination, reproduction) and scaling up (changing institutions), the agri-food initiatives may act on leverage points to enable broader transformation of the Spanish agri-food system
