    Short Paper: An Exploration of Code Diversity in the Cryptocurrency Landscape

    Interest in cryptocurrencies has skyrocketed since their introduction a decade ago, with hundreds of billions of dollars now invested across a landscape of thousands of different cryptocurrencies. While there is significant diversity, there is also a significant number of scams as people seek to exploit the current popularity. In this paper, we seek to identify the extent of innovation in the cryptocurrency landscape using the open-source repositories associated with each one. Among other findings, we observe that while many cryptocurrencies are largely unchanged copies of Bitcoin, the use of Ethereum as a platform has enabled the deployment of cryptocurrencies with more diverse functionalities

    Analyzing Target-Based Cryptocurrency Pump and Dump Schemes

    As the number of cryptocurrencies has exploded in recent years, so too has the fraud. One popular strategy is when actors promote coordinated purchases of coins in hopes of temporarily driving up prices. Prior work investigating such pump and dump schemes has focused on the immediate impact to prices following pump signals, which were largely interpreted as following the same strategy. The reality, as with most cybercrimes, is that the operators of the schemes try out a much more heterogeneous mix of tactics. From a population of 12,252 pump signals observed between July 2017 and January 2019, we identify and examine 3,683 so-called target-based pump signals that announce promoted coins alongside buy and sell targets, but without a coordinated purchase time. We develop a strategy to measure the success of target pumps over longer time horizons. We find that around half of these pumps reach at least one of their sell targets, and that reaching their peak price often takes days, as opposed to the seconds or minutes required in pumps studied previously. We also examine the various groups promoting coins and present evidence that groups try a variety of distinct strategies and experience varying success. We find that the most successful groups promote many coins and issue many pumps, but not for the same coins. As decentralized finance becomes more popular, a deeper understanding of price manipulation techniques like target pumps is needed to combat fraud

    Las Enfermedades Transmitidas por Alimentos (ETAs) constituyen un problema de Salud Pública, de donde deriva la importancia de conocer la "trazabilidad" de los alimentos para ofrecer productos seguros e inocuos. Entre los casos preocupantes se destaca la Encefalopatía Espongiforme Bovina (EEB), ya que actualmente se conoce que el agente etiológico puede atravesar la barrera de especie y desarrollar su variante humana, la enfermedad de Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vECJ). Es preciso considerar el potencial ingreso del agente infectivo en la cadena alimentaria humana durante la alimentación del ganado empleado para la elaboración de derivados de este origen, debido a que el prin1er brote de la enfermedad, surgió a partir de los piensos contaminados, enfatizándose la necesidad de reforzar los controles desde el inicio de la cadena alin1entaria.     An examination of the cryptocurrency pump-and-dump ecosystem

    The recent introduction of thousands of cryptocurrencies in an unregulated environment has created many opportunities for unscrupulous traders to profit from price manipulation. We quantify the scope of one widespread tactic, the “pump and dump”, in which actors coordinate to bid up the price of coins before selling at a profit. We joined all relevant channels on two popular group-messaging platforms, Telegram and Discord, and identified thousands of different pumps targeting hundreds of coins. We find that pumps are modestly successful in driving short-term price rises, but that this effect has diminished over time. We also find that the most successful pumps are those that are most transparent about their intentions. Combined with evidence of concentration among a small number of channels, we conclude that regulators have an opportunity to effectively crack down on this illicit activity that threatens broader adoption of blockchain technologies

    Diverse voltage-sensitive dyes modulate GABAA receptor function

    Voltage-sensitive dyes (VSDs) are important tools for assessing network and single-cell excitability, but an untested premise in most cases is that the dyes do not interfere with the parameters (membrane potential, excitability) that they are designed to measure. We found that popular members of several different families of voltage-sensitive dyes modulate GABA(A) receptor with maximum efficacy and potency similar to clinically used GABA(A) receptor modulators. Di-4-ANEPPS and DiBAC4(3) potentiated GABA function with micromolar and high nanomolar potency respectively and yielded strong maximum effects similar to barbiturates and neurosteroids. Newer blue oxonols had biphasic effects on GABA(A) receptor function at nanomolar and micromolar concentrations, with maximum potentiation comparable to that of saturating benzodiazepine effects. ANNINE 6 and ANNINE 6plus had no detectable effect on GABA(A) receptor function. Even dyes with no activity on GABA(A) receptors at baseline induced photodynamic enhancement of GABA(A) receptors. The basal effects of dyes were sufficient to prolong IPSCs and to dampen network activity in multielectrode array recordings. Therefore, the dual effects of voltage-sensitive dyes on GABAergic inhibition require caution in dye use for studies of excitability and network activity

    Impurity-induced diffusion bias in epitaxial growth

    We introduce two models for the action of impurities in epitaxial growth. In the first, the interaction between the diffusing adatoms and the impurities is ``barrier''-like and, in the second, it is ``trap''-like. For the barrier model, we find a symmetry breaking effect that leads to an overall down-hill current. As expected, such a current produces Edwards-Wilkinson scaling.     Considerando la ancestral tradición de la manufactura quesera en la Provincia de Corrientes y el acercamiento de pequeños productores zonales a la Universidad ocurrido en 2014. El Grupo BiMIA realizó, en el año 2015, una Jornada Práctica de elaboración de quesos en San Luis del Palmar, enfatizando las Buenas Prácticas de Manufactura y el uso de insumos tradicionales a fin de mantener esta usanza, que genera un producto de características particulares y puede ocasionar una mayor demanda, contribuyendo al desarrollo sustentable y sostenibilidad productiva de la región. Se presenta la experiencia y algunos resultados de importancia.

    Density-functional study of hydrogen chemisorption on vicinal Si(001) surfaces

    Relaxed atomic geometries and chemisorption energies have been calculated for the dissociative adsorption of molecular hydrogen on vicinal Si(001) surfaces. We employ density-functional theory, together with a pseudopotential for Si, and apply the generalized gradient approximation by Perdew and Wang to the exchange-correlation functional. We find the double-atomic-height rebonded D_B step, which is known to be stable on the clean surface, to remain stable on partially hydrogen-covered surfaces. The H atoms preferentially bind to the Si atoms at the rebonded step edge, with a chemisorption energy difference with respect to the terrace sites of >sim 0.1 eV. A surface with rebonded single atomic height S_A and S_B steps gives very similar results. The interaction between H-Si-Si-H mono-hydride units is shown to be unimportant for the calculation of the step-edge hydrogen-occupation. Our results confirm the interpretation and results of the recent H_2 adsorption experiments on vicinal Si surfaces by Raschke and Hoefer described in the preceding paper.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys.
