In vitro evaluation of the inhibitory activity of different selenium chemical forms on the growth of a fusarium proliferatum strain isolated from rice seedlings
In this study, the in vitro effects of different Se concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20, and 100 mg kgâ1) from different Se forms (sodium selenite, sodium selenate, selenomethionine, and selenocystine) on the development of a Fusarium proliferatum strain isolated from rice were investigated. A concentrationâdependent effect was detected. Se reduced fungal growth starting from 10 mg kgâ1 and increasing the concentration (15, 20, and 100 mg kgâ1 ) enhanced the inhibitory effect. Se bioactivity was also chemical form dependent. Selenocystine was found to be the most effective at the lowest concentration (5 mg kgâ1 ). Complete growth inhibition was observed at 20 mg kgâ1 of Se from selenite, selenomethionine, and selenocystine. Se speciation analysis revealed that fungus was able to change the Se speciation when the lowest Se concentration was applied. Scanning Electron Microscopy showed an alteration of the fungal morphology induced by Se. Considering that the inorganic forms have a higher solubility in water and are cheaper than organic forms, 20 mg kgâ1 of Se from selenite can be suggested as the best combination suitable to inhibit F. proliferatum strain. The addition of low concentrations of Se from selenite to conventional fungicides may be a promising alternative approach for the control of Fusarium species
Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector
602siopenJUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. âŒ1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV. The reproducibility and sensitivity of sural nerve morphometry in the assessment of diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy
The nerve fibre loss, atrophy and injury of diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy and their responses to metabolic intervention have been studied by morphometric analysis of sural nerve biopsies. The magnitudes and sources of intra- and inter-individual variation in these morphometric measures have not been investigated previously in a systematic manner. Morphometric parameters of nerve fibre damage were measured in four separate fascicles from bilateral sural nerve specimens obtained post-mortem from 13 diabetic and 13 non-diabetic subjects. Intra- and inter-individual coefficients of variation were computed and compared to the magnitude of the differences between normal and diabetic subjects. Several morphometric variables emerged as highly sensitive and reproducible measures of nerve fibre damage suitable for clinical studies of diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy. These observations provide a rational basis for the design of future clinical trials employing morphometric end-points.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46025/1/125_2004_Article_BF00400485.pd
Sensorless Control of BLDC Motors at Low Speed Based on Differential BEMF Measurement
BLDC drives are widely employed in industry due to their intrinsic robustness and high torque-to-weight ratio. The availability of cheap embedded processing power in recent years paved the way for the widespread use of sensorless control techniques; the removal of speed and position sensors leads to substantial increase of robustness and cost savings. Nevertheless, traditional sensorless BLDC control techniques suffer from low efficiency at low speed due to degraded signal to noise ratio on feedback signals and low dynamic response.
This paper describes a novel sensorless control algorithm based on a differential measurement, which allows higher dynamic performance and lower minimum operating speed with respect to traditional techniques without requiring dedicated hardware solutions or complex calculations
A numerical study of the design of ZnMgO window layer for Cadmium-free thin-film CIGS solar cells
The paper analyzes results of numerical simulation with the aim of providing theoretical indications for Cd-free CIGS solar cell. Thickness, composition and doping of the new-material ZnMgO window layer are taken into account, together with the effects of interface states at the heterojunction ZnMgO/CIGS
Numerical analysis of the effect of grain size and defects on the performance of CIGS solar cells
This work shows two-dimensional numerical simulations aimed at providing indications for the development of optimized thin-film CIGS solar cells. The poly-crystalline nature of CIGS and the presence of defects and Cu-poor regions at the grain boundaries and at the CIGS surface are taken into account, together with the possible displacement of the p-n junction from the CdS/CIGS heterojunction
Modeling of thin-film Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells
We show results of numerical and compact modeling of poly-crystalline CIGS thin-film solar cells. We use numerical simulations as a benchmark to develop a simple, physics-based compact model of the behavior of the cell in the dark. We show that, while the single-crystal cell behavior can be accurately described by a two-diode model, when grain boundaries are present and active a four-diode model is required. Finally, we show results of the application of numerical simulations to the study of the cell degradation under damp heat stress conditions
Simulation of Current Transport in Polycrystalline CdTe Solar Cells
Polycrystalline thin-film CdTe solar cells have demonstrated laboratory efficiency
exceeding 17% and are nowadays a commercial technology (albeit with
somewhat lower efficiencies). The standard process features a poorly understood
recrystallization step, obtained by annealing with a source of chlorine.
This study uses two-dimensional numerical modeling to investigate current
transport inside the polycrystalline CdTe absorber with and without recrystallization
effects [increase of grain size and donor ClTe states at grain
boundaries (GBs)]. Solving the Poisson equation and the driftâdiffusion model
for transport with Fermi statistics, while treating the optical problem by the
one-dimensional transfer matrix method and complex refractive indexes, this
study shows that: (i) in a columnar absorber (i.e., one where only vertical GBs
exist), the presence of ClTe donor traps at GBs results in a dip in the band
profiles that effectively serves as an electron collector, significantly increasing
the short-circuit current and efficiency compared with nondecorated GBs; (ii)
while the same dip acts as a hole barrier and thus can be expected to block
holes from flowing when horizontal GBs are present, under illuminated conditions
electron collection at GBs reduces the dip enough to allow substantial
hole flow, and the cell performance is only moderately affected
Fault tolerant PWM generation with doubleredundant logic
To improve reliability some systems adopt double redundancy; however, some failure conditions may prevent the normal operation of the machine or the machine to reach a safe state. The method proposed in this paper allows the normal operation of the system even in a fault condition of the control unit. The signals resulting from the parallel execution of code are modulated to a higher frequency and decoupled from each control stage using two capacitors; the information is then demodulated to obtain the control signal, either in the case of one or two branches working in the control unit. \uc2\ua9 2014 WIT Press
