A quantum-kinetic theory of direct and phonon mediated indirect optical transitions is developed within the framework of the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. After validation against the standard Fermi-Golden-Rule approach in the bulk case, it is used in the simulation of photocurrent generation in ultra-thin crystalline silicon p-i-n-junction devices.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

One dimensional chain of quantum molecule motors as a mathematical physics model for muscle fibre

A quantum chain model of many molecule motors is proposed as a mathematical physics theory on the microscopic modeling of classical force-velocity relation and tension transients of muscle fibre. We proposed quantum many-particle Hamiltonian to predict the force-velocity relation for the slow release of muscle fibre which has no empirical relation yet, it is much more complicate than hyperbolic relation. Using the same Hamiltonian, we predicted the mathematical force-velocity relation when the muscle is stimulated by alternative electric current. The discrepancy between input electric frequency and the muscle oscillation frequency has a physical understanding by Doppler effect in this quantum chain model. Further more, we apply quantum physics phenomena to explore the tension time course of cardiac muscle and insect flight muscle. Most of the experimental tension transients curves found their correspondence in the theoretical output of quantum two-level and three-level model. Mathematically modeling electric stimulus as photons exciting a quantum three-level particle reproduced most tension transient curves of water bug Lethocerus Maximus.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, Arguments are adde

A Unified Picture of the FIP and Inverse FIP Effects

We discuss models for coronal abundance anomalies observed in the coronae of the sun and other late-type stars following a scenario first introduced by Schwadron, Fisk & Zurbuchen of the interaction of waves at loop footpoints with the partially neutral gas. Instead of considering wave heating of ions in this location, we explore the effects on the upper chromospheric plasma of the wave ponderomotive forces. These can arise as upward propagating waves from the chromosphere transmit or reflect upon reaching the chromosphere-corona boundary, and are in large part determined by the properties of the coronal loop above. Our scenario has the advantage that for realistic wave energy densities, both positive and negative changes in the abundance of ionized species compared to neutrals can result, allowing both FIP and Inverse FIP effects to come out of the model. We discuss how variations in model parameters can account for essentially all of the abundance anomalies observed in solar spectra. Expected variations with stellar spectral type are also qualitatively consistent with observations of the FIP effect in stellar coronae.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Ap

Is radiographic measurement of distal femoral torsion reliable?

BACKGROUND: Distal femur torsion (DFT) is a crucial parameter in knee replacement surgery. The reference standard for measuring DFT is posterior condylar angle (PCA) measurement using computed tomography (CT). The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility and reliability of a radiographic PCA measurement method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 125 osteoarthritic knees in 79 patients (42 women and 37 men) with a mean age of 71.6 ± 8.8 years (range 47 to 86 years); 32 knees were aligned, 85 in varus, and eight in valgus. DFT was measured on an antero-posterior (AP) radiograph of the knee in 90° of flexion (known as the seated AP view). The PCA was defined as the angle subtended by the tangent to the posterior condyles and the transepicondylar axis (anatomic PCA [aPCA]) or the line connecting the lateral epicondyle to the medial sulcus (surgical PCA [sPCA]). The PCA was conventionally recorded as positive in the event of external torsion and negative in the event of internal torsion. PCA measurements were performed three times by each of five observers to allow assessments of inter-observer and test-retest reliabilities. RESULTS: aPCA was consistently negative (mean, -6.1 ± 1.6°) (range, 0 to -10°); inter-observer and test-retest reliability were satisfactory (0.54 CONCLUSION: Radiographic measurement of DFT is simple and non-invasive. Measurement reproducibility was satisfactory for aPCA but not for sPCA. aPCA showed marked inter-individual variability and tended to increase when the knee was in valgus. Mean aPCA values were comparable to those reported using CT. In contrast to CT, radiographic DFT measurement can easily be incorporated into the pre- and postoperative work-ups for knee replacement surgery, provided the patient can achieve 90° of knee flexion. INTRODUCTION: Cuboid fractures are very rare. Hence, their treatment has not been standardized. Advances in imaging techniques, particularly three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT), and the introduction of cuboid-specific plates has improved the care of these injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the radiological and clinical outcomes of anatomical reconstruction of comminuted cuboid fractures with a locking plate. HYPOTHESIS: Fixation of comminuted cuboid fractures with a cuboid-specific locking plate leads to stable anatomical reduction and good functional outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 9 consecutive cases of comminuted cuboid fracture treated at a single hospital between January 2009 and December 2015. A 3D CT scan was performed preoperatively with subtraction of the posterior tarsal bone to allow the articular facets to be viewed and analyzed. Fracture fixation was done with a Locking Cuboid Plate (DePuy Synthes™). Associated lesions in the foot were treated during the same procedure. The patients were reviewed by an independent observer who performed a clinical examination, and determined the AOFAS and Maryland Foot Score. The success of the reconstruction was determined by comparing the parameters on weight-bearing X-rays views between the fixed and non-operated cuboid. RESULTS: The mean follow-up was 4.1 years (range 1-6). The Maryland Foot Score was 93.1 [86-100] and the AOFAS was 91.9 [82-100]. The reconstruction was anatomical and long lasting in all 9 cases. There was no foot misalignment in the frontal plane, based on the radiographs (hindfoot axis 5.5° [0-9]). The mean Djian-Annonier angle was 123.9° [108-130]. CONCLUSION: Cuboid fractures can be treated effectively through appropriate imaging and with a cuboid-specific locking plate as evidenced by very good midterm clinical and radiological outcomes in this study. Cryogenic silicon detectors with implanted contacts for the detection of visible photons using the Neganov-Luke Effect

There is a common need in astroparticle experiments such as direct dark matter detection, 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} (double beta decay without emission of neutrinos) and Coherent Neutrino Nucleus Scattering experiments for light detectors with a very low energy threshold. By employing the Neganov-Luke Effect, the thermal signal of particle interactions in a semiconductor absorber operated at cryogenic temperatures, can be amplified by drifting the photogenerated electrons and holes in an electric field. This technology is not used in current experiments, in particular because of a reduction of the signal amplitude with time which is due to trapping of the charges within the absorber. We present here the first results of a novel type of Neganov-Luke Effect detector with an electric field configuration designed to improve the charge collection within the semiconductor.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of Low Temperature Physic

To compare the effectiveness of pulse-lavage brushing followed by hydrogen peroxide-gauze packing with either technique alone or normal-saline irrigation in bone-bed preparation for cemented total hip arthroplasty. 44 fresh-frozen ox femoral canals were prepared for cemented total hip arthroplasty using 4 techniques: normal-saline irrigation, pulse-lavage brushing, hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing, and a combination of the latter 2 techniques. The maximum tensile pull-out force required to separate the prosthesis from the femoral canal was measured as an indicator of the strength of the cement-bone interface. The mean pull-out force to separate the prosthesis from the femoral canal was significantly higher in specimens prepared with pulse-lavage brushing followed by hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing or pulse-lavage brushing alone than those prepared with normal-saline irrigation or hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing alone 300(p<0.001). Pulse-lavage brushing is more effective at cleansing the femoral canal and increasing mechanical strength at the cement-bone interface than preparation with normal-saline irrigation or hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing.<br /
