    Experience of a four-year exploitation of the large control system of the CERN PS accelerator complex is presented with special emphasis on the parameters which are very sensitive to the exploitation team productivity. The software tools suite used in this daily maintenance is described and a particular analysis of the power and benefits of advance software technology used for the architecture of this suite is explained. The integration of this suite in the Control System is presented, as well as its use in the Control System development phase. Some considerations of the potential benefit of an Object Oriented equipment access are outlined

    Remarks on endomorphisms and rational points

    Let X be a variety over a number field and let f: X --> X be an "interesting" rational self-map with a fixed point q. We make some general remarks concerning the possibility of using the behaviour of f near q to produce many rational points on X.     Main Theorem: Spaces of r-branch point 3-cycle covers, degree n or Galois of degree n!/2 have one (resp. two) component(s) if r=n-1 (resp. r\ge n). Improves Fried-Serre on deciding when sphere covers with odd-order branching lift to unramified Spin covers. We produce Hurwitz-Torelli automorphic functions on Hurwitz spaces, and draw Inverse Galois conclusions. Example: Absolute spaces of 3-cycle covers with +1 (resp. -1) lift invariant carry canonical even (resp. odd) theta functions when r is even (resp. odd). For inner spaces the result is independent of r. Another use appears in, http://www.math.uci.edu/~mfried/paplist-mt/twoorbit.html, "Connectedness of families of sphere covers of A_n-Type." This shows the M(odular) T(ower)s for the prime p=2 lying over Hurwitz spaces first studied by, http://www.math.uci.edu/~mfried/othlist-cov/hurwitzLiu-Oss.pdf, Liu and Osserman have 2-cusps. That is sufficient to establish the Main Conjecture: (*) High tower levels are general-type varieties and have no rational points.For infinitely many of those MTs, the tree of cusps contains a subtree -- a spire -- isomorphic to the tree of cusps on a modular curve tower. This makes plausible a version of Serre's O(pen) I(mage) T(heorem) on such MTs. Establishing these modular curve-like properties opens, to MTs, modular curve-like thinking where modular curves have never gone before.     Defect mediated melting and the breaking of quantum double symmetries

    In this paper, we apply the method of breaking quantum double symmetries to some cases of defect mediated melting. The formalism allows for a systematic classification of possible defect condensates and the subsequent confinement and/or liberation of other degrees of freedom. We also show that the breaking of a double symmetry may well involve a (partial) restoration of an original symmetry. A detailed analysis of a number of simple but representative examples is given, where we focus on systems with global internal and external (space) symmetries. We start by rephrasing some of the well known cases involving an Abelian defect condensate, such as the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and one-dimensional melting, in our language. Then we proceed to the non-Abelian case of a hexagonal crystal, where the hexatic phase is realized if translational defects condense in a particular rotationally invariant state.     Rank one discrete valuations of power series fields

    In this paper we study the rank one discrete valuations of the field k((X1,...,Xn))k((X_1,..., X_n)) whose center in k\lcor\X\rcor is the maximal ideal. In sections 2 to 6 we give a construction of a system of parametric equations describing such valuations. This amounts to finding a parameter and a field of coefficients. We devote section 2 to finding an element of value 1, that is, a parameter. The field of coefficients is the residue field of the valuation, and it is given in section 5. The constructions given in these sections are not effective in the general case, because we need either to use the Zorn's lemma or to know explicitly a section σ\sigma of the natural homomorphism R_v\to\d between the ring and the residue field of the valuation vv. However, as a consequence of this construction, in section 7, we prove that k((\X)) can be embedded into a field L((\Y)), where LL is an algebraic extension of kk and the {\em ``extended valuation'' is as close as possible to the usual order function}

    A Novel Hybrid CNN-AIS Visual Pattern Recognition Engine

    Machine learning methods are used today for most recognition problems. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have time and again proved successful for many image processing tasks primarily for their architecture. In this paper we propose to apply CNN to small data sets like for example, personal albums or other similar environs where the size of training dataset is a limitation, within the framework of a proposed hybrid CNN-AIS model. We use Artificial Immune System Principles to enhance small size of training data set. A layer of Clonal Selection is added to the local filtering and max pooling of CNN Architecture. The proposed Architecture is evaluated using the standard MNIST dataset by limiting the data size and also with a small personal data sample belonging to two different classes. Experimental results show that the proposed hybrid CNN-AIS based recognition engine works well when the size of training data is limited in siz

    L'étude de la croissance en diamètre du pin d'Alep, couplée à une étude de la croissance en longueur des pousses et des aiguilles de ce même pin au cours de trois années consécutives a permis de définir le calendrier de ces différentes manifestations de la croissance. La relation de chacune des étapes distinguées dans la mise en place du cerne avec les précipitations et les températures contemporaines de ces différentes étapes et antérieures à elles a permis d'établir que le pin d'Alep est particulièrement sensible aux températures hivernales (janvier et surtout février) et aux précipitations de toute la période qui précède la sécheresse estivale

    Construction of Self-Dual Integral Normal Bases in Abelian Extensions of Finite and Local Fields

    Let F/EF/E be a finite Galois extension of fields with abelian Galois group Γ\Gamma. A self-dual normal basis for F/EF/E is a normal basis with the additional property that TrF/E(g(x),h(x))=δg,hTr_{F/E}(g(x),h(x))=\delta_{g,h} for g,hΓg,h\in\Gamma. Bayer-Fluckiger and Lenstra have shown that when char(E)2char(E)\neq 2, then FF admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if [F:E][F:E] is odd. If F/EF/E is an extension of finite fields and char(E)=2char(E)=2, then FF admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if the exponent of Γ\Gamma is not divisible by 44. In this paper we construct self-dual normal basis generators for finite extensions of finite fields whenever they exist. Now let KK be a finite extension of \Q_p, let L/KL/K be a finite abelian Galois extension of odd degree and let \bo_L be the valuation ring of LL. We define AL/KA_{L/K} to be the unique fractional \bo_L-ideal with square equal to the inverse different of L/KL/K. It is known that a self-dual integral normal basis exists for AL/KA_{L/K} if and only if L/KL/K is weakly ramified. Assuming p2p\neq 2, we construct such bases whenever they exist

    Normal origamis of Mumford curves

    An origami (also known as square-tiled surface) is a Riemann surface covering a torus with at most one branch point. Lifting two generators of the fundamental group of the punctured torus decomposes the surface into finitely many unit squares. By varying the complex structure of the torus one obtains easily accessible examples of Teichm\"uller curves in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. The p-adic analogues of Riemann surfaces are Mumford curves. A p-adic origami is defined as a covering of Mumford curves with at most one branch point, where the bottom curve has genus one. A classification of all normal non-trivial p-adic origamis is presented and used to calculate some invariants.
