    From the heart of the Cornbelt comes the appearance of an improving horse industry. At one time considered the most important property owned by man, the horse has gone through a stage of decreased popularity and is once again making a bid for proper recognition. According to the 1944 census, Iowa has the greatest number of horses of anyone state, that is, 612,000 head. Texas follows up closely in second place with 588,000. Minnesota, third with 539,000; Missouri, fourth with 519,000, and Wisconsin with 451,000 horses stands fifth in rank

    Niobium superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors

    We investigate the performance of superconducting nanowire photon detectors fabricated from ultra-thin Nb. A direct comparison is made between these detectors and similar nanowire detectors fabricated from NbN. We find that Nb detectors are significantly more susceptible than NbN to thermal instability (latching) at high bias. We show that the devices can be stabilized by reducing the input resistance of the readout. Nb detectors optimized in this way are shown to have approximately 2/3 the reset time of similar large-active-area NbN detectors of the same geometry, with approximately 6% detection efficiency for single photons at 470 nm

    Reset dynamics and latching in niobium superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors

    We study the reset dynamics of niobium (Nb) superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) using experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The numerical simulations of the detection dynamics agree well with experimental measurements, using independently determined parameters in the simulations. We find that if the photon-induced hotspot cools too slowly, the device will latch into a dc resistive state. To avoid latching, the time for the hotspot to cool must be short compared to the inductive time constant that governs the resetting of the current in the device after hotspot formation. From simulations of the energy relaxation process, we find that the hotspot cooling time is determined primarily by the temperature-dependent electron-phonon inelastic time. Latching prevents reset and precludes subsequent photon detection. Fast resetting to the superconducting state is therefore essential, and we demonstrate experimentally how this is achieved

    Development of a novel, windowless, amorphous selenium based photodetector for use in liquid noble detectors

    Detection of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) scintillation light produced by liquid noble elements is a central challenge in order to fully exploit the available timing, topological, and calorimetric information in detectors leveraging these media. In this paper, we characterize a novel, windowless amorphous selenium based photodetector with direct sensitivity to VUV light. We present here the manufacturing and experimental setup used to operate this detector at low transport electric fields (2.7-5.2 V/ÎĽ\mum) and across a wide range of temperatures (77K-290K). This work shows that the first proof-of-principle device windowless amorphous selenium is robust under cryogenic conditions, responsive to VUV light at cryogenic temperatures, and preserves argon purity. These findings motivate a continued exploration of amorphous selenium devices for simultaneous detection of scintillation light and ionization charge in noble element detectors

    Characterisation of algicidal bacterial exometabolites against the lipid-accumulating diatom Skeletonema sp.

    Microalgae are of increasing interest due to their occurrence in the environment as harmful algal blooms and as a source of biomass for the production of fine and bulk chemicals. A method for the low cost disruption of algal biomass for environmental remediation or bioprocessing is desirable. Naturally-occurring algal lytic agents from bacteria could provide a cost-effective and environmentally desirable solution. A screen for algal lytic agents against a range of marine microalgae has identified two strains of algicidal bacteria isolated from the coastal region of the Western English Channel. Both strains (designated EC-1 and EC-2) showed significant algicidal activity against Skeletonema sp. and were identified as members of Alteromonas sp. and Maribacter sp. respectively. Characterisation of the two bioactivities revealed that they are small extracellular metabolites displaying thermal and acid stability. Purification of the EC-1 activity to homogeneity and initial structural analysis has identified it as a putative peptide with a mass of 1266. amu

    Robotic manipulation for the shoe-packaging process

    [EN] This paper presents the integration of a robotic system in a human-centered environment, as it can be found in the shoe manufacturing industry. Fashion footwear is nowadays mainly handcrafted due to the big amount of small production tasks. Therefore, the introduction of intelligent robotic systems in this industry may contribute to automate and improve the manual production steps, such us polishing, cleaning, packaging, and visual inspection. Due to the high complexity of the manual tasks in shoe production, cooperative robotic systems (which can work in collaboration with humans) are required. Thus, the focus of the robot lays on grasping, collision detection, and avoidance, as well as on considering the human intervention to supervise the work being performed. For this research, the robot has been equipped with a Kinect camera and a wrist force/ torque sensor so that it is able to detect human interaction and the dynamic environment in order to modify the robot¿s behavior.     Shapes, contact angles, and line tensions of droplets on cylinders

    Using an interface displacement model we calculate the shapes of nanometer-size liquid droplets on homogeneous cylindrical surfaces. We determine effective contact angles and line tensions, the latter defined as excess free energies per unit length associated with the two contact lines at the ends of the droplet.     Reproducibility in modeling and simulation of the knee:Academic, industry, and regulatory perspectives

    Stakeholders in the modeling and simulation (M&amp;S) community organized a workshop at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) entitled “Reproducibility in Modeling and Simulation of the Knee: Academic, Industry, and Regulatory Perspectives.” The goal was to discuss efforts among these stakeholders to address irreproducibility in M&amp;S focusing on the knee joint. An academic representative from a leading orthopedic hospital in the United States described a multi-institutional, open effort funded by the National Institutes of Health to assess model reproducibility in computational knee biomechanics. A regulatory representative from the United States Food and Drug Administration indicated the necessity of standards for reproducibility to increase utility of M&amp;S in the regulatory setting. An industry representative from a major orthopedic implant company emphasized improving reproducibility by addressing indeterminacy in personalized modeling through sensitivity analyses, thereby enhancing preclinical evaluation of joint replacement technology. Thought leaders in the M&amp;S community stressed the importance of data sharing to minimize duplication of efforts. A survey comprised 103 attendees revealed strong support for the workshop and for increasing emphasis on computational modeling at future ORS meetings. Nearly all survey respondents (97%) considered reproducibility to be an important issue. Almost half of respondents (45%) tried and failed to reproduce the work of others. Two-thirds of respondents (67%) declared that individual laboratories are most responsible for ensuring reproducible research whereas 44% thought that journals are most responsible. Thought leaders and survey respondents emphasized that computational models must be reproducible and credible to advance knee M&amp;S.</p
