Probing Split Supersymmetry with Cosmic Rays
A striking aspect of the recently proposed split supersymmetry is the
existence of heavy gluinos which are metastable because of the very heavy
squarks which mediate their decay. In this paper we correlate the expected flux
of these particles with the accompanying neutrino flux produced in inelastic
collisions in distant astrophysical sources. We show that an event rate at
the Pierre Auger Observatory of approximately 1 yr for gluino masses of
about 500 GeV is consistent with existing limits on neutrino fluxes. The
extremely low inelasticity of the gluino-containing hadrons in their collisions
with the air molecules makes possible a distinct characterization of the
showers induced in the atmosphere. Should such anomalous events be observed, we
show that their cosmogenic origin, in concert with the requirement that they
reach the Earth before decay, leads to a lower bound on their proper lifetime
of the order of 100 years, and consequently, to a lower bound on the scale of
supersymmetry breaking, GeV. Obtaining

Vibrational States of Glassy and Crystalline Orthotherphenyl
Low-frequency vibrations of glassy and crystalline orthoterphenyl are studied
by means of neutron scattering. Phonon dispersions are measured along the main
axes of a single crystal, and the corresponding longitudinal and transversal
sound velocities are obtained. For glassy and polycrystalline samples, a
density of vibrational states is determined and cross-checked against other
dynamic observables. In the crystal, low-lying zone-boundary modes lead to an
excess over the Debye density of states. In the glass, the boson peak is
located at even lower frequencies. With increasing temperature, both glass and

Constraining the Cosmic Background Light with four BL Lac TeV spectra
The intrinsic BL Lac spectra above few hundreds GeV can be very different
from the observed ones due to the absorption effects by the diffuse
Extragalactic Background Light (EBL), at present poorly known. With the recent
results, there are now 4 sources with good spectral information: Mkn 421
(z=0.031), Mkn 501 (z=0.034), 1ES 1426+428 (z=0.129) and 1ES 1959+650
(z=0.047). Making simple assumptions on the shape of the intrinsic spectra
(according to the present blazar knowledge), we have considered the effects of
different EBL spectral energy distributions (SED) for the first time on all 4
objects together, deriving constraints for the EBL fluxes. These resulted

Ocean feature recognition using genetic algorithms with fuzzy fitness functions (GA/F3)
A model for genetic algorithms with semantic nets is derived for which the relationships between concepts is depicted as a semantic net. An organism represents the manner in which objects in a scene are attached to concepts in the net. Predicates between object pairs are continuous valued truth functions in the form of an inverse exponential function (e sub beta lxl). 1:n relationships are combined via the fuzzy OR (Max (...)). Finally, predicates between pairs of concepts are resolved by taking the average of the combined predicate values of the objects attached to the concept at the tail of the arc representing the predicate in the semantic net. The method is illustrated by applying it to the identification of oceanic features in the North Atlantic
Effectiveness of the spot-on combination of moxidectin and imidacloprid (Advocate®) in the treatment of ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda in naturally infected cats
Background: The present study evaluated the therapeutic effectiveness of moxidectin 1.0% (w/v) and imidacloprid 10% (w/v) (Advocate® spot-on solution for cats, Bayer Animal Health) against natural infections with the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda in cats. This study was conducted as a GCP, negative-controlled, blinded and randomised field study in privately owned cats living in an area in southern Italy where T. callipaeda is enzootic. Methods: The study was carried out in 30 cats (19 females and 11 males, aged from 8 months to 5 years, weighing 1.2-5.2 kg) of different breeds, naturally infected by T. callipaeda. At study inclusion (Day 0), animals were physically examined and the infection level was assessed by examination of both eyes for clinical score and live adult T. callipaeda count. Each cat was weighed and randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups (G1: Advocate, G2: untreated control). Clinical assessments and T. callipaeda adult counts were performed on Day 14. At the study completion visit on Day 28, clinical assessments and counts of T. callipaeda adults and larvae were performed. All cats were daily observed by their owners and general health conditions were recorded during the entire period of the study. Results: The primary effectiveness variable was the percentage of animals in G1 group (Advocate) showing a complete elimination (parasitological cure) of adult eye worms at Day 14 and Day 28. The effectiveness of the treatment in the G1 group was 93.3 and 100% at Day 14 and Day 28, respectively, when compared to group G2. Total worm count reduction from both eyes for Advocate was 96.3% on Day 14 and 100% on Day 28. Clinical data were confirmed by the examination of conjunctival pouch flushing. An overall reduction in the number of cats with lacrimation and conjunctivitis was observed following treatment despite the fact that in a few cats treated with Advocate clinical signs persisted due to the chronic nature of the disease. Conclusions: Based on the results of the present trial, a single dose of Advocate was found to be safe and highly effective in the treatment of natural T. callipaeda infection in cats

Upper Limits on the Extragalactic Background Light from the Gamma-Ray Spectra of Blazars
The direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) is
difficult at optical to infrared wavelengths because of the strong foreground
radiation originating in the Solar System. Very high energy (VHE, E100 GeV)
gamma rays interact with EBL photons of these wavelengths through pair
production. In this work, the available VHE spectra from six blazars are used
to place upper limits on the EBL. These blazars have been detected over a range
of redshifts and a steepening of the spectral index is observed with increasing
source distance. This can be interpreted as absorption by the EBL. In general,
knowledge of the intrinsic source spectrum is necessary to determine the
density of the intervening EBL. Motivated by the observed spectral steepening
with redshift, upper limits on the EBL are derived by assuming that the
intrinsic spectra of the six blazars are . Upper limits are
then placed on the EBL flux at discrete energies without assuming a specific
spectral shape for the EBL. This is an advantage over other methods since the

Evidence for Intergalactic Absorption in the TeV Gamma-Ray Spectrum of Mkn 501
The recent HEGRA observations of the blazar Mkn 501 show strong curvature in
the very high energy gamma-ray spectrum. Applying the gamma-ray opacity derived
from an empirically based model of the intergalactic infrared background
radiation field (IIRF), to these observations, we find that the intrinsic
spectrum of this source is consistent with a power-law: dN/dE~ E^-alpha with
alpha=2.00 +/- 0.03 over the range 500 GeV - 20 TeV. Within current synchrotron
self-Compton scenarios, the fact that the TeV spectral energy distribution of
Mkn 501 does not vary with luminosity, combined with the correlated, spectrally
variable emission in X-rays, as observed by the BeppoSAX and RXTE instruments,
also independently implies that the intrinsic spectrum must be close to
alpha=2. Thus, the observed curvature in the spectrum is most easily understood

DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders: recommendations and rationale.
Since DSM-IV was published in 1994, its approach to substance use disorders has come under scrutiny. Strengths were identified (notably, reliability and validity of dependence), but concerns have also arisen. The DSM-5 Substance-Related Disorders Work Group considered these issues and recommended revisions for DSM-5. General concerns included whether to retain the division into two main disorders (dependence and abuse), whether substance use disorder criteria should be added or removed, and whether an appropriate substance use disorder severity indicator could be identified. Specific issues included possible addition of withdrawal syndromes for several substances, alignment of nicotine criteria with those for other substances, addition of biomarkers, and inclusion of nonsubstance, behavioral addictions.This article presents the major issues and evidence considered by the work group, which included literature reviews and extensive new data analyses. The work group recommendations for DSM-5 revisions included combining abuse and dependence criteria into a single substance use disorder based on consistent findings from over 200,000 study participants, dropping legal problems and adding craving as criteria, adding cannabis and caffeine withdrawal syndromes, aligning tobacco use disorder criteria with other substance use disorders, and moving gambling disorders to the chapter formerly reserved for substance-related disorders. The proposed changes overcome many problems, while further studies will be needed to address issues for which less data were available
