    Acquisition of ownership illusion with self-disownership in neurological patients

    The multisensory regions in frontoparietal cortices play a crucial role in the sense of body and self. Disrupting this sense may lead to a feeling of disembodiment, or more generally, a sense of disownership. Experimentally, this altered consciousness disappears during illusory own-body perceptions, increasing the intensity of perceived ownership for an external virtual limb. In many clinical conditions, particularly in individuals with a discontinuous or absent sense of bodily awareness, the brain may effortlessly create a convincing feeling of body ownership over a surrogate body or body part. The immediate visual input dominates the current bodily state and induces rapid plastic adaptation that reconfigures the dynamics of bodily representation, allowing the brain to acquire an alternative sense of body and self. Investigating strategies to deconstruct the lack of a normal sense of bodily ownership, especially after a neurological injury, may aid the selection of appropriate clinical treatment

    Perceived Psychological Restorativeness in Relation to Individual and Environmental Variables: A Study Conducted at Poetto Beach in Sardinia, Italy

    This study examines how objective, social, and perceived environmental conditions in a blue space are associated with the perception of psychological restorativeness. We collected data between April 2021 and February 2022 at Poetto Beach in Sardinia, Italy. The participants (N = 255) completed a survey about perceived environmental quality, stress, weather, and restorativeness during their stay at the beach. We used linear models to evaluate the association between psychological restorativeness and social, environmental, and weather parameters. We also analyzed the nature of the association between temperature and restorativeness by viewing this relation as both linear and non-linear and by evaluating the differences in restorativeness between winter, springtime, and summer. The results suggested that the participants viewed the beach as psychologically restorative, especially during the winter season. We also found that the number of people that participants came with was negatively associated with perceived restorativeness. Finally, the results from the correlation analysis revealed that people are less stressed if they go to the beach more frequently

    Failure of the stem in total hip replacement. A study of aetiology and mechanism of failure in 13 cases.

    Thirteen failed stem of Total Hip Replacement were studied: 9 were Charnley THR from an homogeneous series, which gives an incidence of 2.4% of stem fractures with a follow-up of 9-16 years; 4 were Mueller THR. Fatigue fracture of the stem occurred by defective support of the proximal part of the femur, following resorption of the calcar. In all cases reactive tissue to foreign body particles, metal and polyethylene, was found where bone resorption occurred. In Mueller THR wear of the cup produced the large amount of polyethylene particles; in Charnley THR metal particles prevailed and corrosion of the stem is suggested to be the initiating factor

    Trajectories across the healthy adult lifespan on sense of direction, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring places

    Introduction: Self-evaluations about orientation and navigation in the environment contribute to individual differences in spatial cognition. Evidence suggests that they may change, even slightly, with the progression of adulthood. It is necessary to improve the framing of environment-related subjective self-evaluations in adulthood and aging by examining how they change and the factors related to them. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the developmental trajectories of sense of direction, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring place across the adult lifespan while also considering gender and education. Materials and methods: A sample of 1,946 participants (1,068 women), aged 18–87 years, completed the sense of direction and spatial representation, spatial anxiety, and attitude in exploring scales. Results: The regression models showed a linear increase in sense of direction with age, stable spatial anxiety until age 66 years when anxiety began increasing, and a stable attitude in exploring with a deflection by age 71 years. Gender played a role in all three types of self-evaluations, with men reporting higher ratings in sense of direction and attitude toward exploring (especially in older men), and lower levels of spatial anxiety than women did. Education also played a role, with higher education years associated with lower ratings in spatial anxiety and a higher sense of direction, nullifying gender differences in the latter. Discussion: These results offer, in the spatial cognition framework, a better understanding of how specific environment-related self-evaluations develop with age and related factors, such as education. This underscores the importance of enhancing them, particularly in women and older adults

    The relevance of hydroxyapatite and spongious titanium coatings in fixation of cementless stems. An experimental comparative study in rat femur employing histological and microangiographic techniques.

    Pure titanium rods plasma-spray coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) or porous titanium (Ti) of controlled roughness were implanted bilaterally in the distal femur of Sprague-Dawley rats to compare the extent of bone growth on the two types of coating. The relevance of other factors, like mechanical stability and biological adaptation of the bone to the insertion of a foreign body implant, were investigated in femora which were over-reamed (absence of primary fit) or reamed without insertion of the rod. Continuous tetracycline labeling for the first 30 days and for the last 2 weeks in the 90-day group was performed; histological/histometric, fluorescence and microangiographic studies were carried out on serial sections of the implanted and control femora. In the group of stable implants, HA-coated rods showed 90% integration versus 53% with Ti-coated implants (P < 0.001); in over-reamed implants neither surface bone growth nor endosteal fixation occurred, and both types of rods were surrounded by a thick layer of connective tissue. The study documented early adhesion of osteoblasts and direct deposition of bone matrix on the substrate, while on spongious titanium osteogenesis was observed only in proximity to the surface. Remodeling of the reactive, primary bone to mature, lamellar bone took the form of a capsule surrounding the implants and radial bridges connecting the latter to the endosteal surface. The number, height and thickness of these bridges appeared to be the factors determining implant stability, rather than the extent of the bony capsule on the perimeter of the implant. Integration was a function not only of mechanical conditions and surface geometry, but also of the biological response of the whole bone to changes in the vascularization pattern. The reported phenomena can be seen more easily in experimental models involving small rodents because of their fast bone turnover and revascularization, but it is expected that they take place, even at a lower speed, in clinical situations like cementless stems of total hip replacement

    Many older people, both with and without dementia, eventually move from their familiar home environments into unfamiliar surroundings, such as sheltered housing or care homes. Age-related declines in wayfinding skills can make it difficult to learn to navigate in these new, unfamiliar environments. To facilitate the transition to their new accommodation, it is therefore important to develop retirement complexes and care homes specifically designed to reduce the wayfinding difficulties of older people and those with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Residential complexes that are designed to support spatial orientation and that compensate for impaired navigation abilities would make it easier for people with dementia to adapt to their new living environment. This would improve the independence, quality of life and well-being of residents, and reduce the caregivers' workload. Based on these premises, this opinion paper considers how evidence from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and environmental psychology can contribute to ageing- and dementia-friendly design with a view to minimising spatial disorientation. After an introduction of the cognitive mechanisms and processes involved in spatial navigation, and the changes that occur in typical and atypical ageing, research from the field of environmental psychology is considered, highlighting design factors likely to facilitate (or impair) indoor wayfinding in complex buildings. Finally, psychological theories and design knowledge are combined to suggest ageing- and dementia-friendly design guidelines that aim to minimise spatial disorientation by focusing on residual navigation skills

    Scanning electron microscopy study of bone intracortical vessels using an injection and fractured surfaces technique

    The intracortical canal/vessel systems of long bones are not yet completely understood in terms of their morphology and physiology, mainly because of the difficulty of injecting the small calibre vessels and cutting the calcified matrix. Here, we apply a novel method combining perfusion of the vessels and fracture of the cortical bone to enlighten the architecture of this system. The femurs of ten rabbits were perfused with a water-soluble dye (China ink) or alcoholic glycerol solution, and the fractured cortex specimens were then examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results document: (1) the fibrillar structure of the canal surfaces; (2) the perivascular environment with cellular components in different phases of incorporation within the bone matrix; (3) previously unreported filamentous structures on the outer surface of vessels, which could be interpreted as non-myelinic nerve fibres; (4) the inner organisation of the cutting cones. Although based exclusively on morphology, these observation have some relevance to increasing knowledge of bone circulation physiology in the cortical bone

    Investigating the different domains of environmental knowledge acquired from virtual navigation and their relationship to cognitive factors and wayfinding inclinations

    When learning an environment from virtual navigation people gain knowledge about landmarks, their locations, and the paths that connect them. The present study newly aimed to investigate all these domains of knowledge and how cognitive factors such as visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations might support virtual passive navigation. A total of 270 participants (145 women) were tested online. They: (i) completed visuospatial tasks and answered questionnaires on their wayfinding inclinations; and (ii) learnt a virtual path. The environmental knowledge they gained was assessed on their free recall of landmarks, their egocentric and allocentric pointing accuracy (location knowledge), and their performance in route direction and landmark location tasks (path knowledge). Visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations emerged as two separate factors, and environmental knowledge as a single factor. The SEM model showed that both visuospatial abilities and wayfinding inclinations support the environmental knowledge factor, with similar pattern of relationships in men and women. Overall, factors related to the individual are relevant to the environmental knowledge gained from an online virtual passive navigation

    Volatile Organic Compounds Profile in White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) Caviar at Different Stages of Ripening by Multiple Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction

    Caviar is considered a delicacy by luxury product consumers, but few data are available about its flavour chemistry to date. In this study, a multiple headspace-solid phase microextraction (MHS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approach was developed and employed to identify and quantitatively estimate key volatile organic compounds (VOCs) representative in white sturgeon (A. transmontanus) caviar at five different stages of ripening: raw eggs (t0), after 60 days (t1), 120 days (t2), 180 days (t3), and 240 days (t4) of ripening. The method showed the ability to detect and estimate the quantity of 25 flavour compounds, without any severe alteration of the matrix before the analysis and in a short time. The VOCs detected as representative in caviar samples were primarily aldehydes and alcohols, already well known as responsible of fresh fish and seafood flavours, and mainly deriving from lipid peroxidation processes and microbial activity against lipids and amino acids. We found a significant (p &lt; 0.01) increase in the amount of total aldehydes within t0 (29.64 ng/g) and t4 (121.96 ng/g); moreover, an interesting, great arise of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone at the final stage of storage (48.17 ng/g) was recorded. Alcohols were not detected in raw eggs (t0) and then a decrease from t1 (17.77 ng/g) to t4 (10.18 ng/g) was recorded in their amount, with no statistical significance
