Taakgerigte taalkunde-onderrig in die hoërskool binne ʼn kommunikatiewe raamwerk

A general curriculum for languages in South Africa has been developed, with the result that a common approach to grammar teaching is supposedly followed in all schools. An analysis of the curriculum for Afrikaans home language shows that the importance of grammar teaching has shrunk considerably. No official class time is allocated that could be devoted to grammar teaching. Teaching grammar has always been a central and problematic issue for language teachers. “To teach or not to teach grammar” remains the question, along with how much to teach and when to do it. According to the language curriculum, the most desirable teaching approach to follow is a communicative one. A literature study on the communicative approach, with a focus on grammar teaching, is undertaken. The task-based approach, which has been developed from the communicative approach, and ways to implement it are practically explored in the article. Sleutelwoorde: taalkunde-onderrig, grammatika-onderrig, kommunikatiewe benadering, taakgerigte benadering, taalstrukture en –konvensies, sosiale konstruktivismeKeywords: language teaching, grammar teaching, communicative approach, taskbasedapproach, language structures and conventions, social constructivis

Dictionaries as wealth of knowledge? Perceptions of multilingual education students on mobile LSP dictionaries

    Get PDF
Studies in user research with regard to specialised settings have not received much attention in lexicography, as has the use of dictionaries on mobile phones. This study investigated the user perspective by referring to user situations, user needs and user perceptions in a multilingual university setting. The research undertaken was unique in the sense that the author investigated user perceptions of a language for specific purposes (LSP) dictionary on a mobile phone. It presents an empirical study on dictionary use by semi-experts in a multilingual higher education setting. The major aim of the study was to describe usage situations, user needs and user perceptions of education students on the use of a multilingual mobile dictionary. A multilingual university setting is described, where the language of teaching and learning is not necessarily the home language of a student, thus highlighting the need for a specialised multilingual dictionary to be used as a source of knowledge. In accordance with the view of a dictionary as a container of knowledge, students express the need for different types of dictionary information in specialised dictionaries. Findings include the affinity of students for a mobile dictionary. Keywords: Mobile LSP dictionary; user perspective; user needs; user perceptions; dictionary usage; multilingual university settin

Minimally invasive atrioventricular valve surgery – current status and future perspectives

    Get PDF
We are currently witnessing rapid evolution in minimally invasive and catheter-based atrioventricular valve interventions as acceptable alternatives to classic sternotomy access (CSA). Collectively, minimally invasive atrioventricular valve surgery (MIAS) is associated with significant learning curves and its routine application is met with varying degrees of enthusiasm in view of strict quality control, clinical governance and outcome reporting. Whether the reported potential benefits and comparable efficacy across a range of long-term outcome measures reported by experienced MIAS centres can be translated into general international surgical practice, are not well defined. This paper describes the historic evolution of MIAS, the contemporary clinical outcomes of MIAS compared with CSA, and the application of MIAS in “real-life” general practice

CITATION: van der Merwe, M. F. 2022. Teksgebaseerde tesourusgebruik in ’n Afrikaanse taalonderrigkonteks. Lexikos, 32(1):180-199. doi:10.5788/32-1-1714The original publication is available at https://lexikos.journals.ac.za/pubText-based Use of a Thesaurus in an Afrikaans language and teaching context. The topic of the article articulates and explores possibilities for the use of a thesaurus in the language and teaching context of the school classroom. Although the thesaurus is one of the oldest reference works in the history of lexicography, that fact is not reflected in the number of research articles on the topic. A thesaurus does not seem to be a general focus point of lexicographic research, nor be it of pedagogical lexicography. To address the gap in literature, the purpose and lexicographic functions of a thesaurus, especially in a language education context, are foregrounded. The language education context is illuminated with reference to the prescribed use of the thesaurus in school curricula documents, as they dictate the teaching policy in public schools. Text-based use of a thesaurus is recommended and is illustrated against the background of an investigation of a thesaurus and thematic dictionary sections. Recommendations for improvement of lexicographical products are made from a pedagogical lexicographic perspective to ensure optimal use of a thesaurus in a language education setting.

Publisher’s versio
