    Observations on drought damage to some native plant species in eucalypt forests and woodlands near Hobart, Tasmania

    A large number of shrub and tree species suffered damage in the Ridgeway and University Reserves near Hobart, Tasmania during a prolonged drought. Damage was largely confined to shallow soils and gully margins on dolerite, there being little or no damage on equivalent sites on sedimentary substrata. Intraspecific damage was inversely related to the heights of individuals for particular sites. Relative drought resistance is presented diagrammatically for 24 small shrub species and 17 tall shrub and tree species. Drought damage does not directly limit the distribution of most species observed in this study, although the patterns of relative drought resistance accord well with species distribution in respect to available water

This conversion was performed to allow assessment of digital technology applications to supersonic cruise aircraft.     Results are presented of the YF-12 Lockalloy Ventral Fin Program which was carried out by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation - Advanced Development Projects for the joint NASA/USAF YF-12 Project. The primary purpose of the program was to redesign and fabricate the ventral fin of the YF-12 research airplane (to reduce flutter) using Lockalloy, and alloy of beryllium and aluminum, as a major structural material. A secondary purpose, was to make a material characterization study (thermodynamic properties, corrosion; fatigue tests, mechanical properties) of Lockalloy to validate the design of the ventral fin and expand the existing data base on this material. All significant information pertinent to the design and fabrication of the ventral fin is covered. Emphasis throughout is given to Lockalloy fabrication and machining techniques and attendant personnel safety precautions. Costs are also examined. Photographs of tested alloy specimens are shown along with the test equipment used

    Health sector decentralization and Indonesia ' s nutrition programs : opportunities and challenges

    This policy concept paper is intended to assist the center in navigating the tension between opportunities and challenges as activities are adapted to the decentralized national nutrition policy, and to help guide districts and provinces in the conduct o f locally appropriate nutrition programs. The paper synthesizes the findings of an extensive study undertaken by the World Bank with a summary of the results, while the conclusions are discussed in detail in the four annexes. It begins with a review of the accomplishments and remaining nutrition challenges for Indonesia. It then turns to look at the regional diversity in Indonesia ' s nutrition challenges and asks which type of nutrition programs are most cost-effective. The paper concludes with an assessment of the existing institutional arrangement for nutrition service delivery, and discusses steps Indonesia can take to further improve population nutrition and health.     The influence of gas expulsion and initial mass-segregation on the stellar mass-function of globular star clusters

    Recently de Marchi, Paresce & Pulone (2007) studied a sample of twenty globular clusters and found that all clusters with high concentrations have steep stellar mass-functions while clusters with low concentration have comparatively shallow mass-functions. No globular clusters were found with a flat mass-function and high concentration. This seems curious since more concentrated star clusters are believed to be dynamically more evolved and should have lost more low-mass stars via evaporation, which would result in a shallower mass-function in the low-mass part. We show that this effect can be explained by residual-gas expulsion from initially mass-segregated star clusters, and is enhanced further through unresolved binaries. If gas expulsion is the correct mechanism to produce the observed trend, then observation of these parameters would allow to constrain cluster starting conditions such as star formation efficiency and the time-scale of gas expulsion.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 6 figure

    Identification of Hemodynamically Optimal Coronary Stent Designs Based on Vessel Caliber

    Coronary stent design influences local patterns of wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal growth, restenosis, and the endothelialization of stent struts. The number of circumferentially repeating crowns NC for a given stent de- sign is often modified depending on the target vessel caliber, but the hemodynamic implications of altering NC have not previously been studied. In this investigation, we analyzed the relationship between vessel diameter and the hemodynamically optimal NC using a derivative-free optimization algorithm coupled with computational fluid dynamics. The algorithm computed the optimal vessel diameter, defined as minimizing the area of stent-induced low WSS, for various configurations (i.e., NC) of a generic slotted-tube design and designs that resemble commercially available stents. Stents were modeled in idealized coronary arteries with a vessel diameter that was allowed to vary between 2 and 5 mm. The results indicate that the optimal vessel diameter increases for stent configurations with greater NC, and the designs of current commercial stents incorporate a greater NC than hemodynamically optimal stent designs. This finding suggests that reducing the NC of current stents may improve the hemodynamic environment within stented arteries and reduce the likelihood of excessive neointimal growth and thrombus formation
