Resistance or resignation to welfare reform? The activist politics for and against social citizenship
Since 2008, mature welfare states have, to varying degrees, pursued a strategy of welfare reform that has reconfigured the dominant praxis of social citizenship. Drawing on qualitative data from two studies, this paper explores what bearing this has had on the political subjectivity of welfare claimants in the New Zealand context. The findings suggest welfare claimants engage in diverse political struggles for and against social citizenship to resist, reconfigure and resign themselves to the prevailing socio-political settlement. In light of this, conclusions are drawn about the insurgent politics of low-income social security claimants as political agents in the citizenship-making process
Molecular astronomy of cool stars and sub-stellar objects
The optical and infrared spectra of a wide variety of `cool' astronomical
objects including the Sun, sunspots, K-, M- and S-type stars, carbon stars,
brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets are reviewed. The review provides the
necessary astronomical background for chemical physicists to understand and
appreciate the unique molecular environments found in astronomy. The
calculation of molecular opacities needed to simulate the observed spectral
energy distributions is discussed
Evaluation of White Clover Breeding Lines in the Australasian Region
The accuracy of predicting breeding line performance across target environments is a significant criterion in the development of cultivars with broad or specific adaptation. This paper characterises the type and magnitude of genotype-by-environment (GE) interactions estimated from a multi-site white clover (Trifolium repens L.) breeding line evaluation trial conducted across sites in New Zealand and Australia
Scanning probe recognition microscopy investigation of tissue scaffold properties
Scanning probe recognition microscopy is a new scanning probe microscopy technique which enables selective scanning along individual nanofibers within a tissue scaffold. Statistically significant data for multiple properties can be collected by repetitively fine-scanning an identical region of interest. The results of a scanning probe recognition microscopy investigation of the surface roughness and elasticity of a series of tissue scaffolds are presented. Deconvolution and statistical methods were developed and used for data accuracy along curved nanofiber surfaces. Nanofiber features were also independently analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, with results that supported the scanning probe recognition microscopy-based analysis
Animal Defenses against Infectious Agents: Is Damage Control More Important Than Pathogen Control?
The ability of hosts to withstand a given number of pathogens is a critical component of health. Now playing catch-up with plant biologists, animal biologists are starting to formally separate this form of defense from classical resistance

ArgoNeuT and the Neutrino-Argon Charged Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section
ArgoNeuT, a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber in the NuMI beamline at
Fermilab, has recently collected thousands of neutrino and anti-neutrino events
between 0.1 and 10 GeV. The experiment will, among other things, measure the
cross section of the neutrino and anti-neutrino Charged Current Quasi-Elastic
interaction and analyze the vertex activity associated with such events. These
topics are discussed along with ArgoNeuT's automated reconstruction software,
currently capable of fully reconstructing the muon and finding the event vertex
in neutrino interactions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, presented at the International Nuclear Physics

Relação do tempo de uso de anticoncepcionais hormonais orais e tempo para conceber
A total of 565 women was partioned in four groups: the control group with 155 women, who started the sexual life without any contraceptive control; group I, with 162 women who had been taking oral contraceptive during a period of one year, starting at the beginning of their sexual lifes; group II, with 127 women who had "been taking the same oral contraceptive during a period of 2 years starting at the beginning of their sexual lifes; group III, with 121 women who repeated the same procedure during a period of 3 years. All the 565 women had the same social economic status and the same health conditions; were between 19 and 25 years old and used the contraceptive in a same way. The frequency distributions of time required for conception showed a clear difference between groups control and I as compared to groups II and III. The analysis of variance confirmed the difference. Based on these results, it is concluded that oral hormonal contraceptive after the second year of continous use interfer with the reproductive system, this determining a larger time required for conception.
