Precision Measurements of the Semileptonic Charm Decays and
We investigate the decays and ,
where is or , using approximately 7 of data
collected with the CLEO III detector. We find . Fits to
the kinematic distributions of the data provide parameters describing the form
factor of each mode. Combining the form factor results and gives

Effective chiral theory of mesons is applied to study the four decay modes of
. Theoretical values of the branching ratios are in
agreement with the data. The theory predicts that the resonance plays a
dominant role in these decays. There is no new parameter in this study.Comment: 12 pages and one figur
Forward dispersion relations and Roy equations in pi-pi scattering
We review results of an analysis of pipi interactions in S, P and D waves for
two-pion effective mass from threshold to about 1.4 GeV. In particular we show
a recent improvement of this analysis above the K anti-K threshold using more
data for phase shifts and including the S0 wave inelasticity from pipi -> K
anti-K. In addition, we have improved the fit to the f2(1270) resonance and
used a more flexible P wave parametrization above the K anti-K threshold and
included an estimation of the D2 wave inelasticity. The better accuracy thus
achieved also required a refinement of the Regge analysis above 1.42 GeV. We
have checked that the pipi scattering amplitudes obtained in this approach
satisfy remarkably well forward dispersion relations and Roy's equations.Comment: 6 pages, invited talk to the IV International Conference on Quarks

Hadronic Contributions to the Photon Vacuum Polarization and their Role in Precision Physics
I review recent evaluations of the hadronic contribution to the shift in the
fine structure constant and to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.
Substantial progress in a precise determination of these important observables
is a consequence of substantially improved total cross section measurement by
the CMD-2 and BES II collaborations and an improved theoretical understanding.

Hadronic Vacuum Polarization and the Lamb Shift
Recent improvements in the determination of the running of the fine-structure
constant also allow an update of the hadronic vacuum-polarization contribution
to the Lamb shift. We find a shift of -3.40(7) kHz to the 1S level of hydrogen.
We also comment on the contribution of this effect to the determination by

Pion pole contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering and muon anomalous magnetic moment
We derive an analytic result for the pion pole contribution to the
light-by-light scattering correction to the anomalous magnetic moment of the
muon, . Using the vector meson dominance model (VMD) for
the pion transition form factor, we obtain .Comment: 4 pages, revte
Muon-Induced Background Study for Underground Laboratories
We provide a comprehensive study of the cosmic-ray muon flux and induced
activity as a function of overburden along with a convenient parameterization
of the salient fluxes and differential distributions for a suite of underground
laboratories ranging in depth from 1 to 8 km.w.e.. Particular attention
is given to the muon-induced fast neutron activity for the underground sites
and we develop a Depth-Sensitivity-Relation to characterize the effect of such
background in experiments searching for WIMP dark matter and neutrinoless

An experiment for the measurement of the bound-beta decay of the free neutron
The hyperfine-state population of hydrogen after the bound-beta decay of the
neutron directly yields the neutrino left-handedness or a possible right-handed
admixture and possible small scalar and tensor contributions to the weak force.
Using the through-going beam tube of a high-flux reactor, a background free
hydrogen rate of ca. 3 s can be obtained. The detection of the neutral
hydrogen atoms and the analysis of the hyperfine states is accomplished by Lamb
shift source type quenching and subsequent ionization. The constraints on the
neutrino helicity and the scalar and tensor coupling constants of weak
interaction can be improved by a factor of ten.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to EPJ
New high order relations between physical observables in perturbative QCD
We exploit the fact that within massless perturbative QCD the same Green's
function determines the hadronic contribution to the decay width and the
moments of the cross section. This allows one to obtain relations
between physical observables in the two processes up to an unprecedented high
order of perturbative QCD. A precision measurement of the decay width
allows one then to predict the first few moments of the spectral density in
annihilations integrated up to with high accuracy.
The proposed tests are in reach of present experimental capabilities.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, no figure
Study of ATLAS sensitivity to FCNC top decays
The ATLAS experiment sensitivity to top quark Flavour Changing Neutral
Current (FCNC) decays was studied at LHC using ttbar events. While one of the
top quarks is expected to follow the dominant Standard Model decay t->bW, the
other decays through a FCNC channel, i.e. t-> Z u(c), t-> gamma u(c) or t-> g
u(c). Different types of analyses, applied to each FCNC decay mode, were
compared. The FCNC branching ratio sensitivity (assuming a 5sigma signal
significance) and 95% confidence level limits on the branching ratios (in the
hypothesis of signal absence) were obtained
