Dynamics of metal clusters in rare gas clusters
We investigate the dynamics of Na clusters embedded in Ar matrices. We use a
hierarchical approach, accounting microscopically for the cluster's degrees of
freedom and more coarsely for the matrix. The dynamical polarizability of the
Ar atoms and the strong Pauli-repulsion exerted by the Ar-electrons are taken
into account. We discuss the impact of the matrix on the cluster gross
properties and on its optical response. We then consider a realistic case of
irradiation by a moderately intense laser and discuss the impact of the matrix
on the hindrance of the explosion, as well as a possible pump probe scenario

A Simple Theory of Condensation
A simple assumption of an emergence in gas of small atomic clusters
consisting of particles each, leads to a phase separation (first order
transition). It reveals itself by an emergence of ``forbidden'' density range
starting at a certain temperature. Defining this latter value as the critical
temperature predicts existence of an interval with anomalous heat capacity
behaviour . The value suggested in literature

Empowering married young women and improving their sexual and reproductive health: Effects of the First-time Parents Project
The Population Council, in partnership with Child In Need Institute in Kolkata, Deepak Charitable Trust in Vadodara, and International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai, initiated the First-time Parents Project in India to develop and test an integrated package of health and social interventions to improve married young womenâs reproductive and sexual health knowledge and practices, enhance their ability to act in their own interest, and expand their social support networks. The project was formulated on the hypothesis that the periods immediately following marriage and surrounding the first pregnancy and birth offer a unique and powerful entry point for improving the situation of married young women. Findings indicate that the intervention had a significant, positive net effect on most indicators reflecting married young womenâs autonomy, social support networks, partner communication, and knowledge of sexual and reproductive health. However, the net effect of exposure to the intervention was mixed with regard to indicators related to gender role attitudes and attitudes toward domestic violence, as well as reproductive health practices. The experience of the intervention demonstrates that it is feasible to improve married young womenâs reproductive health knowledge and practices, expand their sources of social support, and involve them in activities with peers in safe spaces outside the home, and through the process empower them in their marital and familial relationships. The report suggests that this model could also be integrated into existing NGO or government services, and could be tested for implementation on a larger scale
Constraints on Crustal Structure in the Vicinity of the Adriatic Indenter (European Alps) From Vp and Vp/Vs Local Earthquake Tomography
In this study, 3-D models of P-wave velocity (Vp) and P-wave and S-wave ratio (Vp/Vs) of the crust and upper mantle in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps (northern Italy and southern Austria) were calculated using local earthquake tomography (LET). The data set includes high-quality arrival times from well-constrained hypocenters observed by the dense, temporary seismic networks of the AlpArray AASN and SWATH-D. The resolution of the LET was checked by synthetic tests and analysis of the model resolution matrix. The small inter-station spacing (average of âŒ15 km within the SWATH-D network) allowed us to image crustal structure at unprecedented resolution across a key part of the Alps. The derived P velocity model revealed a highly heterogeneous crustal structure in the target area. One of the main findings is that the lower crust is thickened, forming a bulge at 30â50 km depth just south of and beneath the Periadriatic Fault and the Tauern Window. This indicates that the lower crust decoupled both from its mantle substratum as well as from its upper crust. The Moho, taken to be the iso-velocity contour of Vp = 7.25 km/s, agrees with the Moho depth from previous studies in the European and Adriatic forelands. It is shallower on the Adriatic side than on the European side. This is interpreted to indicate that the European Plate is subducted beneath the Adriatic Plate in the Eastern and eastern Southern Alps
Anharmonic properties of double giant dipole resonance

Semiclassical theory of surface plasmons in spheroidal clusters
A microscopic theory of linear response based on the Vlasov equation is
extended to systems having spheroidal equilibrium shape. The solution of the
linearized Vlasov equation, which gives a semiclassical version of the random
phase approximation, is studied for electrons moving in a deformed equilibrium
mean field. The deformed field has been approximated by a cavity of spheroidal
shape, both prolate and oblate. Contrary to spherical systems, there is now a
coupling among excitations of different multipolarity induced by the
interaction among constituents. Explicit calculations are performed for the
dipole response of deformed clusters of different size. In all cases studied
here the photoabsorption strength for prolate clusters always displays a
typical double-peaked structure. For oblate clusters we find that the
high--frequency component of the plasmon doublet can get fragmented in the
medium size region (). This fragmentation is related to the
presence of two kinds of three-dimensional electron orbits in oblate cavities.

The high mobility group transcription factor Sox8 is a negative regulator of osteoblast differentiation
Bone remodeling is an important physiologic process that is required to maintain a constant bone mass. This is achieved through a balanced activity of bone-resorbing osteoclasts and bone-forming osteoblasts. In this study, we identify the high mobility group transcription factor Sox8 as a physiologic regulator of bone formation. Sox8-deficient mice display a low bone mass phenotype that is caused by a precocious osteoblast differentiation. Accordingly, primary osteoblasts derived from these mice show an accelerated mineralization ex vivo and a premature expression of osteoblast differentiation markers. To confirm the function of Sox8 as a negative regulator of osteoblast differentiation we generated transgenic mice that express Sox8 under the control of an osteoblast-specific Col1a1 promoter fragment. These mice display a severely impaired bone formation that can be explained by a strongly reduced expression of runt-related transcription factor 2, a gene encoding a transcription factor required for osteoblast differentiation. Together, these data demonstrate a novel function of Sox8, whose tightly controlled expression is critical for bone formation
Marriage and motherhood: An exploratory study of the social and reproductive health status of married young women in Gujarat and West Bengal
In India, sexual activity and childbearing among young women take place overwhelmingly within the context of marriage. Despite the high prevalence of early marriage, little is known about the lives of married young women, and few interventions have focused on supporting this group. In response, the Population Council, in partnership with Child In Need Institute in Kolkata (West Bengal) and Deepak Charitable Trust in Vadodara (Gujarat), initiated the First-Time Parents project aimed at developing and testing an integrated package of health and social interventions that would improve married young womenâs reproductive and sexual health knowledge and practices, and expand their ability to act in their own interests. As part of a quasi-experimental study to test the effects of the project, the Institute for Population Sciences and the Council conducted a baseline survey in selected rural sites from late 2002 to early 2003. All women meeting the selection criteriaâi.e., newly married, first-time pregnant or first-time mothers, regardless of ageâin the intervention and control villages were invited to be interviewed. Seismicity and geometry of the south Chilean subduction zone (41.5°S-43.5°S): Implications for controlling parameters
In 2005 an amphibious seismic network was deployed on the Chilean forearc between 41.75°S and 43.25°S. 364 local events were observed in a 11-month period. A subset of the P and S arrival times were inverted for hypocentral coordinates, 1-D velocity structure and station delays. Main seismic activity occurred predominantly in a belt parallel to the coast of ChiloĂ© Island in a depth range of 12â30 km presumably related to the plate interface. The 30° inclination of the shallow part of the Wadati-Benioff zone is similar to observations further north indicating that oceanic plate age is not controlling the subduction angle of the shallower part for the Chilean subduction zone. The down-dip termination of abundant intermediate depth seismicity at approximately 70 km depth seems to be related to the young age (and high temperature) of the oceanic plate.
