    Frequency scaling of photo-induced tunneling

    The DC current-voltage characteristics, induced by a driving electric field with frequency Omega, of a one dimensional electron channel with a tunnel barrier is calculated. Electron-electron interaction of finite-range is taken into account. For intermediate interaction strengths, the non-linear differential conductance shows cusp-like minima at bias voltages integer multiples of hbar Omega / e that are a consequence of the finite non-zero range of the interaction but are independent of the shape of the driving electric field. However, the frequency-scaling of the photo-induced current shows a cross-over between Omega^{-1} and Omega^{-2}, and depends on the spatial shape of the driving field and the range of the interaction.Comment: 7 pages, EURO-TeX, 3 figures, to appear in Europhysics Letter

    Strong influence of the complex bandstructure on the tunneling electroresistance: A combined model and ab-initio study

    The tunneling electroresistance (TER) for ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) with BaTiO_{3} (BTO) and PbTiO}_{3} (PTO) barriers is calculated by combining the microscopic electronic structure of the barrier material with a macroscopic model for the electrostatic potential which is caused by the ferroelectric polarization. The TER ratio is investigated in dependence on the intrinsic polarization, the chemical potential, and the screening properties of the electrodes. A change of sign in the TER ratio is obtained for both barrier materials in dependence on the chemical potential. The inverse imaginary Fermi velocity describes the microscopic origin of this effect; it qualitatively reflects the variation and the sign reversal of the TER. The quantity of the imaginary Fermi velocity allows to obtain detailed information on the transport properties of FTJs by analyzing the complex bandstructure of the barrier material.Comment: quality of figures reduce

    Evolution of dopant-induced helium nanoplasmas

    Two-component nanoplasmas generated by strong-field ionization of doped helium nanodroplets are studied in a pump-probe experiment using few-cycle laser pulses in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. High yields of helium ions and a pronounced, droplet size-dependent resonance structure in the pump-probe transients reveal the evolution of the dopant-induced helium nanoplasma. The pump-probe dynamics is interpreted in terms of strong inner ionization by the pump pulse and resonant heating by the probe pulse which controls the final charge states detected via the frustration of electron-ion recombination

    Fractal Dimensions in Perceptual Color Space: A Comparison Study Using Jackson Pollock's Art

    The fractal dimensions of color-specific paint patterns in various Jackson Pollock paintings are calculated using a filtering process which models perceptual response to color differences (\Lab color space). The advantage of the \Lab space filtering method over traditional RGB spaces is that the former is a perceptually-uniform (metric) space, leading to a more consistent definition of ``perceptually different'' colors. It is determined that the RGB filtering method underestimates the perceived fractal dimension of lighter colored patterns but not of darker ones, if the same selection criteria is applied to each. Implications of the findings to Fechner's 'Principle of the Aesthetic Middle' and Berlyne's work on perception of complexity are discussed.Comment: 21 pp LaTeX; two postscript figure

    First hint for CP violation in neutrino oscillations from upcoming superbeam and reactor experiments

    We compare the physics potential of the upcoming neutrino oscillation experiments Daya Bay, Double Chooz, NOvA, RENO, and T2K based on their anticipated nominal luminosities and schedules. After discussing the sensitivity to theta_{13} and the leading atmospheric parameters, we demonstrate that leptonic CP violation will hardly be measurable without upgrades of the T2K and NOvA proton drivers, even if theta_{13} is large. In the presence of the proton drivers, the fast track to hints for CP violation requires communication between the T2K and NOvA collaborations in terms of a mutual synchronization of their neutrino-antineutrino run plans. Even in that case, upgrades will only discover CP violation in a relatively small part of the parameter space at the 3 sigma confidence level, while 90% confidence level hints will most likely be obtained. Therefore, we conclude that a new facility will be required if the goal is to obtain a significant result with high probability.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figure

    Selective Induction of Apoptosis in Melanoma Cells by Tyrosinase Promoter-Controlled CD95 Ligand Overexpression

    Induction of apoptosis has been demonstrated previously by overexpression of CD95 ligand (CD95L) in cultured human melanoma cells. For in vivo approaches based on CD95L, however, targeted expression is a prerequisite and tyrosinase promoters have been considered for selection. Luciferase reporter gene assays performed for a representative panel of melanoma cell lines characterized by strong (SK-Mel-19), moderate (SK-Mel-13, MeWo), weak (A-375), and missing expression (M-5) of endogenous tyrosinase revealed high tyrosinase promoter activities in SK-Mel-19, SK-Mel-13, and MeWo, but only weak activities in A-375 and M-5 as well as in non-melanoma cell lines. After transfection of a CMV promoter CD95L expression construct, melanoma cells were found highly sensitive, as compared with non-melanoma cells. By applying a tyrosinase promoter CD95L construct, apoptosis was selectively induced in SK-Mel-19, SK-Mel-13, MeWo as well as in A-375, which was characterized by high CD95 surface expression and high sensitivity to agonistic CD95 activation. M5 and non-melanoma cell lines remained uninfluenced. Also, resistance to agonistic CD95 activation seen in MeWo characterized by weak CD95 surface expression was overcome by overexpression of CD95L. Our investigations provide evidence that tyrosinase promoter CD95L constructs may be of value for selective induction of apoptosis in therapeutic strategies for melanoma

    Signal of Quark Deconfinement in the Timing Structure of Pulsar Spin-Down

    The conversion of nuclear matter to quark matter in the core of a rotating neutron star alters its moment of inertia. Hence the epoch over which conversion takes place will be signaled in the spin-down "signal_prl.tex" 581 lines, 22203 characters characteristics of pulsars. We find that an observable called the braking index should be easily measurable during the transition epoch and can have a value far removed (by orders of magnitude) from the canonical value of three expected for magnetic dipole radiation, and may have either sign. The duration of the transition epoch is governed by the slow loss of angular momentum to radiation and is further prolonged by the reduction in the moment of inertia caused by the phase change which can even introduce an era of spin-up. We estimate that about one in a hundred pulsars may be passing through this phase. The phenomenon is analogous to ``bachbending'' observed in the moment of inertia of rotating nuclei observed in the 1970's, which also signaled a change in internal structure with changing spin.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Revtex.
