    Analysis of Minor Component Segregation in Ternary Powder Mixtures

    In many powder handling operations, inhomogeneity in powder mixtures caused by segregation could have significant adverse impact on the quality as well as economics of the production. Segregation of a minor component of a highly active substance could have serious deleterious effects, an example is the segregation of enzyme granules in detergent powders. In this study, the effects of particle properties and bulk cohesion on the segregation tendency of minor component are analysed. The minor component is made sticky while not adversely affecting the flowability of samples. The segregation extent is evaluated using image processing of the photographic records taken from the front face of the heap after the pouring process. The optimum average sieve cut size of components for which segregation could be reduced is reported. It is also shown that the extent of segregation is significantly reduced by applying a thin layer of liquid to the surfaces of minor component, promoting an ordered mixture

    Regulating Clothing Outwork: A Sceptic's View

    By applying the strategies of international anti-sweatshop campaigns to the Australian context, recent regulations governing home-based clothing production hold retailers responsible for policing the wages and employment conditions of clothing outworkers who manufacture clothing on their behalf. This paper argues that the new approach oversimplifies the regulatory challenge by assuming (1) that Australian clothing production is organised in a hierarchical ‘buyer-led’ linear structure in which core retail firms have the capacity to control their suppliers’ behaviour; (2) that firms act as unitary moral agents; and (3) that interventions imported from other times and places are applicable to the contemporary Australian context. After considering some alternative regulatory approaches, the paper concludes that the new regulatory strategy effectively privatises responsibility for labour market conditions – a development that cries out for further debate

    Investigations on the anisotropic yield behaviour of a cohesive bulk solid

    The theoretical treatment of the failure behaviour of bulk solids is often based on the simplifying assumption that the material acts as an isotropic continuum, regardless of the direction in which the stresses are acting. This article describes the results from measurements with both a standard Jenike shear tester and a biaxial tester which indicate that the yield behaviour of a cohesive solid can show significant anisotropic effects depending on the directions of the principal stresses at steady-state and incipient failure. Moreover, it can be concluded from those measurements that neither the flow function nor the density of a cohesive bulk solid can be regarded as an invariant with respect to stress history without taking into account possible anisotropic effects

    Role of lipidomics in assessing the functional lipid composition in breast milk

    Breast milk is the ideal source of nutrients for infants in early life. Lipids represent 2–5% of the total breast milk composition and are a major energy source providing 50% of an infant’s energy intake. Functional lipids are an emerging class of lipids in breast milk mediating several different biological functions, health, and developmental outcome. Lipidomics is an emerging field that studies the structure and function of lipidome. It provides the ability to identify new signaling molecules, mechanisms underlying physiological activities, and possible biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis of diseases, thus laying the foundation for individualized, targeted, and precise nutritional management strategies. This emerging technique can be useful to study the major role of functional lipids in breast milk in several dimensions. Functional lipids are consumed with daily food intake; however, they have physiological benefits reported to reduce the risk of disease. Functional lipids are a new area of interest in lipidomics, but very little is known of the functional lipidome in human breast milk. In this review, we focus on the role of lipidomics in assessing functional lipid composition in breast milk and how lipid bioinformatics, a newly emerging branch in this field, can help to determine the mechanisms by which breast milk affects newborn health

    A comparison of three Potato peeler designs

    This study set out to compare the effectiveness and efficiency of three common potato peeler designs, and whether there were any differences related to gender in terms of use. An experiment was designed involving a timed potato-peeling task using three different potato peeler designs. A balanced group of N = 20 males and females was recruited. The results showed that the vertical peeler with flexible blade resulted in the shortest peeling times. This peeler also produced least waste although these differences were not statistically significant. The results did not reveal any statistically significant gender differences
