    Processing of hybrid laminates integrating ZrB2/SiC and SiC layers

    Tape casting technique was used to develop hybrid laminates constituting by SiC and ZrB2-SiC layers; the main aim is obtaining a structure which integrate the unique properties of these materials and potentially extent their application temperature range. Multilayer with ZrB2-SiC layers stacked in between SiC ones were successfully processed. Thin cracks propagated in the composite layers without affecting SiC ones; their formation was due to residual stresses developed in the two materials because of the differences in their shrinkage and coefficients of thermal expansion. However, these cracks did not significantly affect the material properties: relative density, elastic modulus and flexural strength of hybrid laminates was indeed only slightly lower than those of laminates made up of layers with the same composition

    Towards a Social Justice Disposition in Communication and Sport Scholarship

    In this introduction to a special issue on sport communication and social justice, we offer some reflections on the state of the discipline as it relates to social justice. We bring attention to the role of sport communication scholars in the advancement of social justice goals and articulate a set of dispositions for researchers to bring to their practice, predicated on internalizing and centralizing morality, ethics, and the political. Identifying the epistemological (under)currents in the meaningful study of communication and sport, we offer a set of challenges for researchers in the contemporary critique of the communication industries based on “sensibilities” or dispositions of the research to those studied. We then introduce and frame the 13 articles that make up this double special issue of Communication & Sport. Collectively, these articles begin to demonstrate such dispositions in their interrogation of some of the most important and spectacularized acts of social justice campaigns and activism in recent decades alongside investigations of everyday forms of marginalization, resistance, and collective action that underpin social change—both progressive and regressive. We hope this special issue provides a vehicle for continued work in the area of sports communication and social justice

    Finding a Bounded-Degree Expander Inside a Dense One

    It follows from the Marcus-Spielman-Srivastava proof of the Kadison-Singer conjecture that if G=(V,E)G=(V,E) is a Δ\Delta-regular dense expander then there is an edge-induced subgraph H=(V,EH)H=(V,E_H) of GG of constant maximum degree which is also an expander. As with other consequences of the MSS theorem, it is not clear how one would explicitly construct such a subgraph. We show that such a subgraph (although with quantitatively weaker expansion and near-regularity properties than those predicted by MSS) can be constructed with high probability in linear time, via a simple algorithm. Our algorithm allows a distributed implementation that runs in O(log⁡n)\mathcal O(\log n) rounds and does \bigO(n) total work with high probability. The analysis of the algorithm is complicated by the complex dependencies that arise between edges and between choices made in different rounds. We sidestep these difficulties by following the combinatorial approach of counting the number of possible random choices of the algorithm which lead to failure. We do so by a compression argument showing that such random choices can be encoded with a non-trivial compression. Our algorithm bears some similarity to the way agents construct a communication graph in a peer-to-peer network, and, in the bipartite case, to the way agents select servers in blockchain protocols

    Multiple complex intracellular cascades contributing to Hunter syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis type II) pathogenesis have been recognized and documented in the past years. However, the hierarchy of early cellular abnormalities leading to irreversible neuronal damage is far from being completely understood. To tackle this issue, we have generated two novel iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS) loss of function human neuronal cell lines by means of genome editing. We show that both neuronal cell lines exhibit no enzymatic activity and increased GAG storage despite a completely different genotype. At a cellular level, they display reduced differentiation, significantly decreased LAMP1 and RAB7 protein levels, impaired lysosomal acidification and increased lipid storage. Moreover, one of the two clones is characterized by a marked decrease of the autophagic marker p62, while none of the two mutants exhibit marked oxidative stress and mitochondrial morphological changes. Based on our preliminary findings, we hypothesize that neuronal differentiation might be significantly affected by IDS functional impairment

    Consensus Needs Broadcast in Noiseless Models but can be Exponentially Easier in the Presence of Noise

    Consensus and Broadcast are two fundamental problems in distributed computing, whose solutions have several applications. Intuitively, Consensus should be no harder than Broadcast, and this can be rigorously established in several models. Can Consensus be easier than Broadcast? In models that allow noiseless communication, we prove a reduction of (a suitable variant of) Broadcast to binary Consensus, that preserves the communication model and all complexity parameters such as randomness, number of rounds, communication per round, etc., while there is a loss in the success probability of the protocol. Using this reduction, we get, among other applications, the first logarithmic lower bound on the number of rounds needed to achieve Consensus in the uniform GOSSIP model on the complete graph. The lower bound is tight and, in this model, Consensus and Broadcast are equivalent. We then turn to distributed models with noisy communication channels that have been studied in the context of some bio-inspired systems. In such models, only one noisy bit is exchanged when a communication channel is established between two nodes, and so one cannot easily simulate a noiseless protocol by using error-correcting codes. An Ω(ϔ−2n)\Omega(\epsilon^{-2} n) lower bound on the number of rounds needed for Broadcast is proved by Boczkowski et al. [PLOS Comp. Bio. 2018] in one such model (noisy uniform PULL, where Ï”\epsilon is a parameter that measures the amount of noise). In such model, we prove a new Θ(ϔ−2nlog⁥n)\Theta(\epsilon^{-2} n \log n) bound for Broadcast and a Θ(ϔ−2log⁥n)\Theta(\epsilon^{-2} \log n) bound for binary Consensus, thus establishing an exponential gap between the number of rounds necessary for Consensus versus Broadcast

    Intranasal dexmedetomidine and intravenous ketamine for procedural sedation in a child with alpha-mannosidosis: A magic bullet?

    Background: Procedural sedation is increasingly needed in pediatrics. Although different drugs or drugs association are available, which is the safest and most efficient has yet to be defined, especially in syndromic children with increased sedation-related risk factors. Case report: we report the case of a five-year-old child affected by alpha-mannosidosis who required procedural sedation for an MRI scan and a lumbar puncture. We administered intranasal dexmedetomidine (4 \u3bcg/kg) 45 min before intravenous cannulation, followed by one bolus of ketamine (1 mg/kg) for each procedure. The patient maintained spontaneous breathing and no desaturation or any complication occurred. Conclusion: intranasal dexmedetomidine and intravenous ketamine could be a feasible option for MRI and lumbar puncture in children with alpha-mannosidosis needing sedation
