    Evaluating Trade-Offs Between Sustainability, Performance, and Cost of Green Machining Technologies

    The growing demand to reduce environmental impacts has encouraged manufacturers to pursue various green manufacturing technologies and strategies. These solutions, though, may have a direct impact on several productivity metrics including availability, quality, service life, and cost. This study presents an approach to evaluate the trade-offs between the environmental, performance, and financial impacts of green machining technologies by combining green manufacturing principles into life cycle performance evaluation. The approach is validated by investigating the implications of reducing the processing time by increasing the cutting speed and chip load to green a horizontal milling process

    Quantum-mechanical model for particles carrying electric charge and magnetic flux in two dimensions

    We propose a simple quantum mechanical equation for nn particles in two dimensions, each particle carrying electric charge and magnetic flux. Such particles appear in (2+1)-dimensional Chern-Simons field theories as charged vortex soliton solutions, where the ratio of charge to flux is a constant independent of the specific solution. As an approximation, the charge-flux interaction is described here by the Aharonov-Bohm potential, and the charge-charge interaction by the Coulomb one. The equation for two particles, one with charge and flux (q,Ί/Zq, \Phi/Z) and the other with (−Zq,−Ω-Zq, -\Phi) where ZZ is a pure number is studied in detail. The bound state problem is solved exactly for arbitrary qq and Ί\Phi when Z>0Z>0. The scattering problem is exactly solved in parabolic coordinates in special cases when qΊ/2πℏcq\Phi/2\pi\hbar c takes integers or half integers. In both cases the cross sections obtained are rather different from that for pure Coulomb scattering.Comment: 12 pages, REVTeX, no figur

    Polynomial Solution of Non-Central Potentials

    We show that the exact energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Schrodinger equation for charged particles moving in certain class of non-central potentials can be easily calculated analytically in a simple and elegant manner by using Nikiforov and Uvarov (NU) method. We discuss the generalized Coulomb and harmonic oscillator systems. We study the Hartmann Coulomb and the ring-shaped and compound Coulomb plus Aharanov-Bohm potentials as special cases. The results are in exact agreement with other methods.Comment: 18 page

    Towards Energy-Efficient Machine Tools Through the Development of the Twin-Control Energy Efficiency Module

    This open access book summarizes the results of the European research project Twin-model based virtual manufacturing for machine tool-process simulation and control (Twin-Control). The first part reviews the applications of ICTs in machine tools and manufacturing, from a scientific and industrial point of view, and introduces the Twin-Control approach, while Part 2 discusses the development of a digital twin of machine tools. The third part addresses the monitoring and data management infrastructure of machines and manufacturing processes and numerous applications of energy monitoring. Part 4 then highlights various features developed in the project by combining the developments covered in Parts 3 and 4 to control the manufacturing processes applying the so-called CPSs. Lastly, Part 5 presents a complete validation of Twin-Control features in two key industrial sectors: aerospace and automotive.     A Joint Statement from the American Thyroid Association, the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, the European Thyroid Association, the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging on Current Diagnostic and Theranostic Approaches in the Management of Thyroid Cancer

    Background: The American Thyroid Association (ATA), the European Association of Nuclear Medicine, the European Thyroid Association, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging have established an intersocietal working group to address the current controversies and evolving concepts in thyroid cancer management and therapy. The working group annually identifies topics that may significantly impact clinical practice and publishes expert opinion articles reflecting intersocietal collaboration, consensus, and suggestions for further research to address these important management issues. Summary: In 2019, the intersocietal working group identified the following topics for review and interdisciplinary discussion: (i) perioperative risk stratification, (ii) the role of diagnostic radioactive iodine (RAI) imaging in initial staging, and (iii) indicators of response to RAI therapy. Conclusions: The intersocietal working group agreed that (i) initial patient management decisions should be guided by perioperative risk stratification that should include the eighth edition American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system to predict disease specific mortality, the modified 2009 ATA risk stratification system to estimate structural disease recurrence, with judicious incorporation of molecular theranostics to further refine management recommendations; (ii) diagnostic RAI scanning in ATA intermediate risk patients should be utilized selectively rather than being considered mandatory or not necessary for all patients in this category; and (iii) a consistent semiquantitative reporting system should be used for response evaluations after RAI therapy until a reproducible and clinically practical quantitative system is validated
