Tensor hypercontraction: A universal technique for the resolution of matrix elements of local, finite-range -body potentials in many-body quantum problems
Configuration-space matrix elements of N-body potentials arise naturally and
ubiquitously in the Ritz-Galerkin solution of many-body quantum problems. For
the common specialization of local, finite-range potentials, we develop the
eXact Tensor HyperContraction (X-THC) method, which provides a quantized
renormalization of the coordinate-space form of the N-body potential, allowing
for a highly separable tensor factorization of the configuration-space matrix
elements. This representation allows for substantial computational savings in
chemical, atomic, and nuclear physics simulations, particularly with respect to

Effects of Feeding Calcium Salts of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) to Finishing Steers
Thirty crossbred steers were randomly assigned to three treatment groups and fed corn-based finishing diets (88% concentrate) containing 0, 1.0 or 2.5% conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) for an average of 130 days. Steers fed 2.5% CLA consumed less feed and had lower daily gains than control steers. Carcass weights tended to be reduced, and marbling scores were decreased by feeding 2.5% CLA. There were no significant effects of feeding CLA on dressing percentages, yield grades and backfat measurements. The rounds from each animal were physically separated into tissue components. Rounds from steers fed CLA contained a higher percentage of lean tissue and a lower percentage of fat. Feeding CLA increased concentrations of CLA in lipids from fat and lean in rib steaks and rounds. Increasing CLA in beef had no effects on shelf life, tenderness, juiciness, flavor or flavor intensity of rib steaks. Although results indicated that feeding calcium salts of CLA to beef steers decreased performance, concentrations of CLA in tissues could be increased offering the availability of a leaner, more healthful meat product
Experimental study of flow deflectors designed to alleviate ground winds induced by exhaust of 80-by 120-foot wind tunnel
An experimental study directed at finding a deflector ramp that will reduce to an acceptable level the ground winds under the exhaust jet of the 80 by 120 Foot Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Center is described. A one-fifieth scale model of the full-scale facility was used to investigate how the jet flow field was modified by the various design parameters of the ramp. It was concluded that the ground winds were alleviated sufficiently by a ramp with end plates located next to the wind tunnel building along the ground edge of the exhaust opening. At full scale, the ramp should have a slant length of 7.62 m (25 ft) or more, and would be elevated at about 45 degrees to the ground plane. The material should have holes less than 15.2 (6 in) in diameter distributed uniformly over its surface to produce a porosity of about 30%

Phenotypic profiles of cultured glomerular cells following repeated cycles of hydrocarbon injury.BackgroundThe glomerulus has been implicated as a target of hydrocarbon injury in vitro and in vivo. In the present studies, the phenotypic profiles of cultured rat glomerular cells (GCs) following repeated cycles of hydrocarbon injury were evaluated. Cultured GCs were incubated for 24 hours with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP; 3 μmol/L), a prototypical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and were allowed to recover overnight before two additional cycles of chemical challenge during serial propagation in vitro. At the end of this regimen, control cultures were characterized by predominance of fusiform cells that grew in “hills and valleys,” while GCs subjected to hydrocarbon injury displayed an epithelial morphology characterized by a rounded, polygonal shape clearly distinct from that normally exhibited by glomerular mesangial cells (GMCs) in culture.MethodsIndirect immunofluorescent detection of cell markers was conducted to identify cells of mesenchymal or epithelial origin. Measurements of DNA synthesis and cell number were performed to determine proliferative capacities of the different cell types in response to hydrocarbon challenge.ResultsImmunofluorescence studies revealed that control GC cultures contained mostly α-smooth muscle (SM) actin-positive cells, with a few (5.1%± 2.6) E-cadherin–positive cells occasionally identified. In contrast, BaP-treated cultures exhibited a mixed cell population in which E-cadherin–positive cells were predominant (66.6%± 4.1). Single-cell cloning of naive cultures of GCs yielded four clones, three of which exhibited a fusiform morphology and were α-SM actin positive (SCC 1 through SCC 3) and one (SCC 4E) that exhibited epithelial characteristics similar to those found in hydrocarbon-treated cultures. Immunofluorescence studies showed that epithelial cells in hydrocarbon-treated cultures, as well as SCC 4E-derived clones, were vimentin positive and cytokeratin negative, characteristics similar to glomerular visceral epithelial cells (GVECs). DNA synthesis and cell proliferation in clone SCC 1 were decreased following acute BaP challenge, while growth rates in SCC 4E-derived clones were unaffected by hydrocarbon injury. Repeated cycles of hydrocarbon challenge in clonal populations yielded different profiles of DNA synthesis, with significant decreases in SCC 1 and no changes in SCC 4E.ConclusionsThese observations suggest that hydrocarbon injury induces differential responses in cells of the glomerulus, resulting in inhibition of GMCs and selective growth advantage of GVECs. These alterations are reminiscent of critical events described in the pathogenesis of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and raise important questions about the pathogenesis of hydrocarbon-induced nephropathies
Ground‐based measurements of NOx and total reactive oxidized nitrogen (NOy) at Sable Island, Nova Scotia, during the NARE 1993 summer intensive
Measurements of NO, NO2, and total reactive oxidized nitrogen (NOy) were added to ongoing measurements of aerosols, CO, and O3 at Sable Island (43°55′N, 60°01′W), Nova Scotia, during the North Atlantic Regional Experiment (NARE) 1993 summer intensive. Ambient levels of NOx and NOy were found to be highly variable, and elevated levels can be attributed to the transport of polluted continental air or presumably to relatively fresh emissions from sources upwind (e.g., ship traffic). The median values for NOx and NOy are 98 and 266 parts per trillion by volume (pptv), respectively. A multiday pollution episode occurred during which elevated NOx and NOy were observed with enhanced levels of O3, CO, and condensation nuclei. Air masses of recent tropical marine origin characterized by low and constant levels of O3 and CO were sampled after Hurricane Emily. The correlation between ozone and CO is reasonably good, although the relation is driven by the single pollution episode observed during the study. The correlation of O3 with NOy and with NOy‐NOx is complicated by the presumed NOy removal processes in the marine boundary layer. Examination of the radiosonde data and comparisons of the surface data with those obtained on the overflying aircraft provide clear indications of vertical stratification above the site
