Wage differentials in domestic work: The impact of contractual arrangements

The regulation of employment relationships dates back to the process of industrialization where workers had dangerous and injurious working conditions. However, pervasive poor conditions, together with a wide range of contractual arrangements, demand additional efforts from national and international institutions. The Employment Relationship Recommendation (Recommendation 198) (ILO 2006) and the Decent Work Agenda, illustrate the International Labor Organization’s (ILO 2002) efforts to guarantee protection of workers’ rights in labor laws and other regulations, including collective agreements. These initiatives also attempt to bring more hidden types of employment relationships under the protection of the law. However, the assessment of the impact of such initiatives is still missing in the literature. Our article attempts to fill this gap and to offer empirical evidence on the role of regulations in the labor market of domestic workers (...)FC

Wage differentials within a female dominated occupation: domestic workers in informal and flexible jobs in Portugal

    Get PDF
We use an original dataset to examine the impact of informal and flexible contractual arrangements on wages of a sample of domestic workers hired by private employers in Portugal. All arrangements should be formal involving declaration of employment relationship to social security authorities. Our results suggest formality benefits workers whether they have stable or flexible contract. However, social and labour market processes help shape and maintain inequality, especially for migrant workers. Specific and general skills are undervalued and are unable to generate rewards. Compensation was identified for contingent work, multiple employers and elderly caregivers but this hides exploitation and insecurity.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Low-field microwave absorption and magnetoresistance in iron nanostructures grown by electrodeposition on n-type lightly-doped silicon substrates

In this study we investigate magnetic properties, surface morphology and crystal structure in iron nanoclusters electrodeposited on lightly-doped (100) n-type silicon substrates. Our goal is to investigate the spin injection and detection in the Fe/Si lateral structures. The samples obtained under electric percolation were characterized by magnetoresistive and magnetic resonance measurements with cycling the sweeping applied field in order to understand the spin dynamics in the as-produced samples. The observed hysteresis in the magnetic resonance spectra, plus the presence of a broad peak in the non-saturated regime confirming the low field microwave absorption (LFMA), were correlated to the peaks and slopes found in the magnetoresistance curves. The results suggest long range spin injection and detection in low resistive silicon and the magnetic resonance technique is herein introduced as a promising tool for analysis of electric contactless magnetoresistive samples.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

Workplace abuse and harassment: the vulnerability of informal and migrant domestic workers in Portugal

    Get PDF
Policy makers and researchers are alarmed by the pervasive substandard working conditions and mistreatment in domestic work worldwide. Using an original dataset from a sample of domestic workers in Portugal (n=684), our study explores types of abuse and harassment and tries to unveil the potential factors affecting the likelihood of having been a victim. Empirical evidence pointed to three segments of domestic workers: victims of labour abuses related to contract and wages, victims of multiple abuses including mistreatment and also psychological and sexual harassment, and a segment with no occurrence of abuse. Informal workers are more often victims of labour abuses, while migrants, especially Brazilian women, are more likely to report all types of abuse and harassment. On the other hand, carers of the elderly often suffered multiple abuses. The results suggest that despite the prevalence of labour abuses in Portugal, the most severe abuses are uncommon.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Typology of abuse and harassment in domestic work in Portugal

Using an original dataset, our study explores types of abuse and harassment suffered by a sample of domestic workers in Portugal (n=684). Empirical evidence based on multiple correspondence and cluster analyses pointed to three segments of domestic workers: victims of labour abuse related to contract and wages, victims of multiple abuse including mistreatment and also psychological and sexual harassment, and a segment with no occurrence of abuse. Descriptive statistics suggest migrants, especially Brazilian women, prevail in all types of abuse and harassment, but carers of the elderly are often victims of multiple abuse. Domestic workers seem to be protected from the risk of mistreatment by trust related issues and child caring.FCT
