    Joint Learning of Word and Label Embeddings for Sequence Labelling in Spoken Language Understanding

    We propose an architecture to jointly learn word and label embeddings for slot filling in spoken language understanding. The proposed approach encodes labels using a combination of word embeddings and straightforward word-label association from the training data. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, our approach does not require label embeddings as part of the input and therefore lends itself nicely to a wide range of model architectures. In addition, our architecture computes contextual distances between words and labels to avoid adding contextual windows, thus reducing memory footprint. We validate the approach on established spoken dialogue datasets and show that it can achieve state-of-the-art performance with much fewer trainable parameters.Comment: Accepted for publication at ASRU 201

    The Fairness Challenge in Computer Networks

    In this paper, the concept of fairness in computer networks is investigated. We motivate the need of examining fairness issues by providing example future application scenarios where fairness support is needed in order to experience sufficient service quality. Fairness definitions from political science and their application to computer networks are described and a state-of-the-art overview of research activities in fairness, from issues such a queue management and tcp-friendliness to issues like fairness in layered multi-rate multicast scenarios, is given. We contribute with this paper to the ongoing research activities by defining the fairness challenge with the purpose of helping direct future investigations to with spots on the map of research in fairness

    Saberes y trayectorias de atención a la salud de poblaciones vulneradas en México: un abordaje interdisciplinario

    El objetivo de este artículo es evidenciar la potencialidad que tiene el abordaje interdisciplinario en la comprensión integral del proceso salud/enfermedad/atención de poblaciones vulneradas de tres comunidades, una rural ubicada en el Estado de Oaxaca (Charco Redondo) y dos en la Ciudad de México (Xochimilco y Magdalena Contreras). La experiencia y los saberes (representaciones y prácticas sociales) se recuperan desde la perspectiva de sus habitantes, siguiendo la estrategia basada en aproximaciones multi método. Con base en referentes teóricos y metodológicos compartidos, se revisó el material empírico producido en tres investigaciones previas. El abordaje interdisciplinario se orientó hacia la reinterpretación histórica, antropológica y psicosocial de los saberes y de las trayectorias de búsqueda de atención de la población, para lograr una comprensión más amplia e integradora del proceso salud/enfermedad que contribuya a la elaboración de políticas públicas orientadas a mejorar las condiciones de salud de poblaciones vulneradas. Al final del trabajo se plantean algunas reflexiones sobre los alcances, limitaciones y los retos para impulsar la investigación interdisciplinaria

    Prevalence and factors associated with preoperative anxiety in children aged 5-12 years

    Abstract Objective: to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with preoperative anxiety in children who wait for outpatient surgery. Method: cross-sectional analysis of baseline data of a prospective cohort study that investigates the predictors of postoperative pain in children aged 5-12 years submitted to inguinal and umbilical hernia repair. It was selected 210 children, which were interviewed in the preoperative holding area of a general hospital. Anxiety was evaluated using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS). Sociodemographic and clinical variables were analyzed as exposure and anxiety (mYPAS final score>30) as outcome. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with preoperative anxiety. Results: forty-two percent (42.0%) of children presented preoperative anxiety (CI95%: 35.7%-48.6%), with mean scores equal to 30.1 (SD=8.4). Factors associated with preoperative anxiety were: age group of 5-6 years (OR=2.28; p=0.007) and socioeconomic status classified as class C (OR=2.39; p=0.016). Conclusion: the evaluation of children who wait for outpatient surgery should be multidimensional and comprise information on age and socioeconomic status, in order to help in the identification and early treatment of preoperative anxiety

    Baseline characteristics of patients in the reduction of events with darbepoetin alfa in heart failure trial (RED-HF)

    <p>Aims: This report describes the baseline characteristics of patients in the Reduction of Events with Darbepoetin alfa in Heart Failure trial (RED-HF) which is testing the hypothesis that anaemia correction with darbepoetin alfa will reduce the composite endpoint of death from any cause or hospital admission for worsening heart failure, and improve other outcomes.</p> <p>Methods and results: Key demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings, along with baseline treatment, are reported and compared with those of patients in other recent clinical trials in heart failure. Compared with other recent trials, RED-HF enrolled more elderly [mean age 70 (SD 11.4) years], female (41%), and black (9%) patients. RED-HF patients more often had diabetes (46%) and renal impairment (72% had an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). Patients in RED-HF had heart failure of longer duration [5.3 (5.4) years], worse NYHA class (35% II, 63% III, and 2% IV), and more signs of congestion. Mean EF was 30% (6.8%). RED-HF patients were well treated at randomization, and pharmacological therapy at baseline was broadly similar to that of other recent trials, taking account of study-specific inclusion/exclusion criteria. Median (interquartile range) haemoglobin at baseline was 112 (106–117) g/L.</p> <p>Conclusion: The anaemic patients enrolled in RED-HF were older, moderately to markedly symptomatic, and had extensive co-morbidity.</p&gt

    Hyaluronic acid hydrogels incorporating platelet lysate enhance human pulp cell proliferation and differentiation

    The restoration of dentine-pulp complex remains a challenge for dentists; nonetheless, it has been poorly addressed. An ideal system should modulate the host response, as well as enable the recruitment, proliferation and differentiation of relevant progenitor cells. Herein was proposed a photocrosslinkable hydrogel system based on hyaluronic acid (HA) and platelet lysate (PL). PL is a cocktail of growth factors (GFs) and cytokines involved in wound healing orchestration, obtained by the cryogenic processing of platelet concentrates, and was expected to provide the HA hydrogels specific biochemical cues to enhance pulp cellsâ recruitment, proliferation and differentiation. Stable HA hydrogels incorporating PL (HAPL) were prepared after photocrosslinking of methacrylated HA (Met-HA) previously dissolved in PL, triggered by the Ultra Violet activated photoinitiator Irgacure 2959. Both the HAPL and plain HA hydrogels were shown to be able to recruit cells from a cell monolayer of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) isolated from permanent teeth. The hDPCs were also seeded directly over the hydrogels (5 Ã 104 cells/hydrogel) and cultured in osteogenic conditions. Cell metabolism and DNA quantification were higher, in all time-points, for PL supplemented hydrogels (p < 0,05). Alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) activity and calcium quantification peaks were observed for the HAPL group at 21 days (p < 0,05). The gene expression for ALPL and COLIA1 was up-regulated at 21 days to HAPL, compared with HA group (p < 0,05). Within the same time point, the gene expression for RUNX2 did not differ between the groups. Overall, data demonstrated that the HA hydrogels incorporating PL increased the cellular metabolism and stimulate the mineralized matrix deposition by hDPSCs, providing clear evidence of the potential of the proposed system for the repair of damaged pulp/dentin tissue and endodontics regeneration.LFDA acknowledges Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) for the grant 2014/12017-8.
