    International audienceThe January 2013 Special Issue of IEEE transactions on medical imaging discusses papers on medical imaging and image computing in computational physiology. Aslanid and co-researchers present an experimental technique based on stained micro computed tomography (CT) images to construct very detailed atrial models of the canine heart. The paper by Sebastian proposes a model of the cardiac conduction system (CCS) based on structural information derived from stained calf tissue. Ho, Mithraratne and Hunter present a numerical simulation of detailed cerebral venous flow. The third category of papers deals with computational methods for simulating medical imagery and incorporate knowledge of imaging physics and physiology/biophysics. The work by Morales showed how the combination of device modeling and virtual deployment, in addition to patient-specific image-based anatomical modeling, can help to carry out patient-specific treatment plans and assess alternative therapeutic strategies

    Imaging of non-operated cholesteatoma: Clinical practice guidelines

    SummaryMiddle ear cholesteatoma is an aggressive form of chronic otitis media requiring surgical therapy. The surgical strategy depends on the location of the lesion, its extensions to the middle ear and mastoid, the anatomical conformation of the tympanomastoid cavities and the health status of the patient (as well as his or her interest in aquatic leisure activities). For several years, imaging of the ear has been a routine test in the preoperative work-up of the disease. National guidelines for the topic “Imaging of non-operated middle ear cholesteatoma” were prepared in October 2010, for the annual congress of the French Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (SFORL), by a panel of experts from the SFORL, represented by the French Association of Otology and Neuro-otology (AFON), and the French Radiological Society (SFR), represented by the French Society of Head and Neck Imaging (CIREOL).     Comparison of proteomic profiles of serum, plasma, and modified media supplements used for cell culture and expansion

    BACKGROUND: The culture and expansion of human cells for clinical use requires the presence of human serum or plasma in culture media. Although these supplements have been extensively characterized in their chemical composition, only recently it has been possible to provide by high throughput protein analysis, a comprehensive profile of the soluble factors contributing to cell survival. This study analyzed and compared the presence of 100 proteins including chemokines, cytokines and soluble factors in six different types of media supplements: serum, plasma, recalcified plasma, heat inactivated serum, heat inactivated plasma and heat inactivated recalcified plasma. METHODS: Serum, plasma, recalcified plasma, and heat inactivated supplements were prepared from ten healthy subjects. The levels of 100 soluble factors were measured in each sample using a multiplexed ELISA assay and compared by Eisen hierarchical clustering analysis. RESULTS: A comparison of serum and plasma levels of soluble factors found that 2 were greater in plasma but 18 factors were greater in serum including 11 chemokines. The levels of only four factors differed between recalcified plasma and plasma. Heat inactivation had the greatest effect on soluble factors. Supervised Eisen hierarchical clustering indicated that the differences between heat inactivated supplements and those that were not were greater than the differences within these two groups. The levels of 36 factors differed between heat inactivated plasma and plasma. Thirty one of these factors had a lower concentration in heat inactivated plasma including 12 chemokines, 4 growth factors, 4 matrix metalloproteases, and 3 adhesion molecules. Heat inactivated decalcified plasma is often used in place of heat inactivated serum and the levels of 19 soluble factors differed between these two supplements. CONCLUSION: Our report provides a comprehensive protein profile of serum, plasma recalcified plasma, and heat inactivated supplements. This profile represents a qualitative and quantitative database that can aid in the selection of the appropriate blood derived supplement for human cell cultures with special requirements

    Retarding Sub- and Accelerating Super-Diffusion Governed by Distributed Order Fractional Diffusion Equations

    We propose diffusion-like equations with time and space fractional derivatives of the distributed order for the kinetic description of anomalous diffusion and relaxation phenomena, whose diffusion exponent varies with time and which, correspondingly, can not be viewed as self-affine random processes possessing a unique Hurst exponent. We prove the positivity of the solutions of the proposed equations and establish the relation to the Continuous Time Random Walk theory. We show that the distributed order time fractional diffusion equation describes the sub-diffusion random process which is subordinated to the Wiener process and whose diffusion exponent diminishes in time (retarding sub-diffusion) leading to superslow diffusion, for which the square displacement grows logarithmically in time. We also demonstrate that the distributed order space fractional diffusion equation describes super-diffusion phenomena when the diffusion exponent grows in time (accelerating super-diffusion).Comment: 11 pages, LaTe

    Failure of the empirical OCT law in the Bi2Sr2CuO6+d compound

    We have studied the evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with oxygen doping of single-layered Bi2Sr2CuO6+d thin films and ceramics in the overall superconducting (Tc, S290K) phase diagram. While the universal relation between the room-temperature thermopower S290K and the critical temperature is found to hold in the strongly overdoped region (d>0.14), a strong violation is observed in the underdoped part of the phase diagram. The observed behaviour is compared with other cuprates and the different scenarios are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    Thermopower in the strongly overdoped region of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor

    The evolution of the thermoelectric power S(T) with doping, p, of single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d ceramics in the strongly overdoped region is studied in detail. Analysis in term of drag and diffusion contributions indicates a departure of the diffusion from the T-linear metallic behavior. This effect is increased in the strongly overdoped range (p~0.2-0.28) and should reflect the proximity of some topological change.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
