Background: The blood volume in pregnant women increases, but thisvolume of blood serum is larger than the growth of blood cells resulting in hemo-dilution that causes anemia. Red guava and green beans are vegetablesthat contain high levels of iron and vitamin C. It is hypothesized that either fruitcan be used as non-pharmacological alternative toanti-anemia therapy. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of guava juice and green bean juice to increase hemoglobin (Hb) level in pregnant women. Subjects and Method: This was a quasi experimental study conducted in Ngasem Community Health Center, Kediri, East Java, from Januari 4 to 10, 2018. A sample of 32 pregnant women of last trimester was selected for this study by random sampling. This sample was allocated into the red guava juicegroup (n1=16) and green bean extract group (n2=16). The independent variables were red guava juice and green bean extract. The dependent variable was Hb level. Hb levels after treatment between the red guava juice and green bean juice were compared and tested by t-test. Results: Before treatment, Hb level in the guava group (mean= 10.38; SD= 0.72) was comparable with the green bean group (mean= 10.48; SD= 0.81) with p= 0.175. This means that at the baseline the Hb level of the two groups were about equal allowing valid comparison of the Hb levels after treatment between the two groups. After treatment, Hb level in the guava group (mean= 11.34; SD= 0.61) was also comparable with the green bean group (mean= 11.43; SD= 0.61) with p= o.679. Conclusion: The effectiveness of red guava juice and green bean juice in increasing Hb level is comparable. The effectiveness of either red guava juice or green bean juice in increasing Hb level can not be established in this study because the design of this study had no placebo control group. It is recommended thata future study be conducted with an RCT design and placebo comparison group. From the current study, no valid recommendation can be provided to advise pregnant women with anemia to consume red guava or green bean juice. Abstract Background: Oral Squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is typically discovered at an early stage; nevertheless, regional lymph node metastases are prevalent; therefore, surgical excision of the primary tumor is commonly coupled with neck dissection and radiotherapy. Cancer cells become invasive by acquiring a mesenchymal phenotype, a process known as the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Vimentin, α-SMA and TGF-β expressions are believed to take part in EMT and tumor progression. Aim: this work aimed to evaluate the expression of Vimentin, α-SMA and TGF-β on OSCC progression and hence propose potential role as potential prognostic markers or therapeutic targets. Materials and methods: twenty-four specimens of different OSCC grades were divided according to Broader`s classification into three groups I, II and III. Mean area fraction of immunopositivity for Vimentin, α-SMA and TGF-β expressions as well as clinical lymph-node involvement was evaluated for each group. Results: α-SMA and TGF-β were significantly upregulated in poorly differentiated OSCC and α-SMA expression correlated with lymph node involvement. Vimentin expression was highest in moderately differentiated OSCC and didn’t correlate with lymph-node involvement. Conclusion: α-SMA is suggested to be a better prognostic factor than vimentin for OSCC progression

    Utilization of FEP energetics

The research and development work on Fountain Effect Pump Systems (FEP systems) has been of interest in the competition between mechanical pumps for He II and FEP units. The latter do not have moving parts. In the course of the work, the energetics have been addressed using one part of a simple four-changes-of-state cycle. One option is the FEP ideal change of state at constant chemical potential (mu). The other option is the two-state sequence mu-P with a d mu=0 state change followed by an isobar. Questions of pump behavior, of flow rate response to temperature difference at the hot end, and related questions of thermodynamic cycle completion and heat transfer have been addressed. Porous media data obtained elucidate differences between vapor-liquid phase separation (VLPS) and Zero Net Mass Transfer (ZNMF)

Neutrophil CD64 in early-onset neonatal sepsis

Background: Neonatal sepsis is a life threatening disease with an incidence of 3.5 to 8 cases per 1,000 live births; and mortality rate 16 to 30%. Cytokines, produced by monocytes, macrophages, and endothelial cells in response to infectious stimuli are important proinflammatory mediators in the early phases of the sepsis syndrome. Elevated serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) had been found in both neonatal and adult sepsis. However, for neonatal sepsis, little is known about a group of molecules playing a central role in the innate immune system. Among them is the neutrophil CD64 which is expressed on neutrophil surface in many inflammatory conditions. Objective: To study the neutrophil CD64 expression in neonates with early onset sepsis and its relation to other laboratory markers as IL6, CRP, total leucocytic count and platelet count. Methods: This study comprised 30 neonates with a gestational age of 28 to 40 weeks with a picture of early onset neonatal sepsis within 48 hours of life admitted to neonatal care unit, Suzan Mubarak Hospital, El-Minia University, Egypt during the period from February, 2008 to January, 2009 and 20 healthy neonates age and sex matched as a control group. Neutrophil surface expression of CD64 was quantified with flow cytometry. We measured plasma IL6, C-reactive protein, complete blood count and blood culture. Results: Neutrophil CD64 expression was increased significantly in neonates with neonatal sepsis than controls (p=0.001). Cases with history of premature rupture of membranes (PROM) ≥48 hours, with positive blood culture or poor outcome had the highest levels of neutrophil CD64 expression (528±50.7, 558±58.4 and 560.9±43.9 relative fluorescence units (RFU) respectively). A significant positive correlation was found between CD64 levels and the levels of IL6 (r=0.71, p=0.001),C-reactive protein (r=0.74, p=0.001) and total leucocytic count (r=0.76 ,p=0.01) and negative correlation with gestational age (r=-0.92, p=0.001) and body weight (r=-0.92, p=0.006), but there was no correlation between it and platelet count (r=-0.32, p=0.08). Conclusion: Neutrophil CD64 expression is increased in neonates with early-onset neonatal sepsis and correlated well with other laboratory markers of sepsis. Keywords: Neonatal sepsis, Cytokines, Neutrophil CD64, IL6, PROMEgypt J Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2010;8(1):19-2
