Estimative for the size of the compactification radius of a one extra dimension Universe
In this work, we use the Casimir effect to probe the existence of one extra
dimension. We begin by evaluating the Casimir pressure between two plates in a
manifold, and then use an appropriate statistical analysis in
order to compare the theoretical expression with a recent experimental data and
set bounds for the compactification radius
On Lorentz violation in scattering at finite temperature
Small violation of Lorentz and CPT symmetries may emerge in models unifying
gravity with other forces of nature. An extension of the standard model with
all possible terms that violate Lorentz and CPT symmetries are included. Here a
CPT-even non-minimal coupling term is added to the covariant derivative. This
leads to a new interaction term that breaks the Lorentz symmetry. Our main
objective is to calculate the cross section for the
scattering in order to
investigate any violation of Lorentz and/or CPT symmetry at finite temperature.
Thermo Field Dynamics formalism is used to consider finite temperature effects.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in PL
Nonlinear mirror instability
Slow dynamical changes in magnetic-field strength and invariance of the
particles' magnetic moments generate ubiquitous pressure anisotropies in weakly
collisional, magnetized astrophysical plasmas. This renders them unstable to
fast, small-scale mirror and firehose instabilities, which are capable of
exerting feedback on the macroscale dynamics of the system. By way of a new
asymptotic theory of the early nonlinear evolution of the mirror instability in
a plasma subject to slow shearing or compression, we show that the instability
does not saturate quasilinearly at a steady, low-amplitude level. Instead, the
trapping of particles in small-scale mirrors leads to nonlinear secular growth
of magnetic perturbations, . Our theory explains
recent collisionless simulation results, provides a prediction of the mirror
evolution in weakly collisional plasmas and establishes a foundation for a
theory of nonlinear mirror dynamics with trapping, valid up to .Comment: 5 pages, submitte

Algorithms for network piecewise-linear programs
In this paper a subarea of Piecewise-Linear Programming named network Piecewise-Linear Programming (NPLP) is discussed. Initially the problem formulation, main efinitins and related Concepts are presented. In the sequence of the paper, four specialized algorithms for NPLP, as well as the results of a preliminary computational study, are presented
Low redshift constraints on energy-momentum-powered gravity models
There has been recent interest in the cosmological consequences of
energy-momentum-powered gravity models, in which the matter side of Einstein's
equations is modified by the addition of a term proportional to some power,
, of the energy-momentum tensor, in addition to the canonical linear term.
In this work we treat these models as phenomenological extensions of the
standard CDM, containing both matter and a cosmological constant. We
also quantitatively constrain the additional model parameters using low
redshift background cosmology data that are specifically from Type Ia
supernovas and Hubble parameter measurements. We start by studying specific
cases of these models with fixed values of which lead to an analytic
expression for the Friedmann equation; we discuss both their current
constraints and how the models may be further constrained by future
observations of Type Ia supernovas for WFIRST complemented by measurements of
the redshift drift by the ELT. We then consider and constrain a more extended
parameter space, allowing to be a free parameter and considering scenarios
with and without a cosmological constant. These models do not solve the
cosmological constant problem per se. Nonetheless these models can
phenomenologically lead to a recent accelerating universe without a
cosmological constant at the cost of having a preferred matter density of
around instead of the usual . Finally we
also briefly constrain scenarios without a cosmological constant, where the
single component has a constant equation of state which needs not be that of
matter; we provide an illustrative comparison of this model with a more
standard dynamical dark energy model with a constant equation of state.Comment: 13+2 pages, 12+1 figures; A&A (in press
On direction of spontaneous magnetization in a "cubic" ferromagnet
The magnetic properties of anisotropic films have been studied using
3D-neutron polarization analysis. The experimental facts refer to essential
distinction of the sample states, magnetized in opposite directions. For an
explanation of asymmetrical effects the model is offered, in which the
fundamental theoretical principles of structural phase transitions are used.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX (phbauth) and 4 figures (epsfig
