Anomalous precursor diamagnetism at low reduced magnetic fields and the role of Tc inhomogeneities in the superconductors Pb55In45 and underdoped La1.9Sr0.1CuO4
The magnetic field dependence of the magnetization was measured above the
superconducting transition in a high-Tc underdoped cuprate La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 and
in a low-Tc alloy (Pb55In45). Near the superconducting transition [typically
for (T-Tc)/Tc<0.05] and under low applied magnetic field amplitudes [typically
for H/Hc2(0)<0.01, where Hc2(0) is the corresponding upper critical field
extrapolated to T=0 K] the magnetization of both samples presents a diamagnetic
contribution much larger than the one predicted by the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau
(GGL) approach for superconducting fluctuations. These anomalies have been
already observed in cuprate compounds by various groups and attributed to
intrinsic effects associated with the own nature of these high-Tc
superconductors. However, we will see here that our results in both high and
low-Tc superconductors may be explained quantitatively, and consistently with
the GGL behavior observed at higher fields, by just taking into account the
presence in the samples of an uniform distribution of Tc inhomogeneities. These
Tc inhomogeneities, which may be in turn associated with stoichiometric
inhomogeneities, were estimated from independent measurements of the
temperature dependence of the field-cooled magnetic susceptibility under low
applied magnetic fields.Comment: 25 pages, including 6 figures and 1 table. Typos corrected. Compacte
Equivariant Poincar\'e series of filtrations and topology
Earlier, for an action of a finite group on a germ of an analytic
variety, an equivariant -Poincar\'e series of a multi-index filtration in
the ring of germs of functions on the variety was defined as an element of the
Grothendieck ring of -sets with an additional structure. We discuss to which
extend the -Poincar\'e series of a filtration defined by a set of curve or
divisorial valuations on the ring of germs of analytic functions in two
variables determines the (equivariant) topology of the curve or of the set of
divisors
[Carotid atherosclerosis and white matter hypodensities: a controversial relationship]
INTRODUCTION:
White matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin, are recognized as an important cause of morbidity with established clinical and cognitive consequences. Nonetheless, many doubts remain on its physiopathology. Our goal is to clarify the potential role of carotid atherosclerosis and other vascular risk factors in the development of white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
We included patients that underwent CT brain scan and neurosonologic evaluation within a one-month period. Full assessment of vascular risks factors was performed. We seek to find independent associations between white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin, carotid intima-media thickness and vascular risk factors.
RESULTS:
472 patients were included, mean age was 67.32 (SD: 14.75), 274 (58.1%) were male. The independent predictors of white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin were age (OR: 1.067, 95% IC: 1.049 - 1.086, p < 0.001) and hypertension (OR: 1.726, 95% IC: 1.097 - 2.715, p = 0.018). No association was found between IMT (OR: 2.613, 95% IC: 0.886 - 7.708, p = 0.082) or carotid artery stenosis (OR: 1.021, 95% IC: 0.785 - 1.328, p = 0.877) and white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin.
DISCUSSION:
Only age and hypertension proved to have an independent association with white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin. Carotid atherosclerosis, evaluated by IMT and the degree of carotid artery stenosis, showed no association with white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin. Since atherosclerosis is a systemic pathology, these results suggest that alternative mechanisms are responsible for the development of white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin.
CONCLUSION:
Age and hypertension seem to be the main factors in the development of white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin. No association was found between carotid atherosclerosis and white matter hypodensities of presumed vascular origin
Community perceptions about mangrove ecosystem services and threats
The Ecosystem Service Framework discloses the ecosystem’s benefits to society and provides support to preserve threatened systems while considering the economic and social dimensions of the communities more dependent on its resources. Mangroves provide important and valuable goods and services to communities, at different spatial and temporal scales. Nevertheless, over-exploitation of these resources can generate poverty traps, where rural households can no longer use the ecosystem as a source of food security or income. This study uses three communities that live in surrounding areas of mangroves from São Tomé Island (Diogo Nunes, Angolares, and Malanza) as a case study. The main aim was to evaluate locals’ perspectives about ecosystem use, threats, and conservation. Questionnaires were conducted among local populations and provided valuable information to identify the major beneficiaries of mangrove resources. These results also indicated that the services and threats identified locally are different from those identified in the literature. The importance of considering the impact of local values and traditions in the use of ecosystem resources was also highlighted by the obtained results since São Tomé residents do not acknowledge the existence of services that do not bring a direct benefit. The absence of awareness about mangroves and their threats can cause severe damages to the ecosystem’s health, requiring the implementation of specific awareness-raising policies among populations that interact with mangrove ecosystems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Assessing Ecosystem Services in Mangroves: Insights from São Tomé Island (Central Africa)
Mangroves are some of the most productive coastal systems on the planet and provide valuable ecosystem services (ES). They are especially important in threatened ecosystems and developing countries, where they are likely to have direct impacts on local communities. An approach based on ES allows assessing ecosystems across the domains of ecology, sociology and economy. This study focused on the evaluation of ES in mangroves and started by creating a comprehensive global list of mangrove ES based on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. These services were then quantified using the best available indicators for mangrove systems. The mangroves of Diogo Nunes, São João dos Angolares and Malanza, located in the São Tomé Island, were used to illustrate the challenges in applying ES indicators in this type of ecosystems. The obtained results confirmed that mangroves can provide important and diverse services. However, the high variability among mangrove systems affects their ability to deliver ES, requiring caution for the extrapolation across regions. This assessment emphasizes how the ES framework can be used as a tool to develop management plans that integrate conservation goals and human wellbeing.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Cosmeceutical potential of grateloupia turuturu: using low-cost extraction methodologies to obtain added-value extracts
The invasive macroalga Grateloupia turuturu is known to contain a diversity of bioactive compounds with different potentialities. Among them are compounds with relevant bioactivities for cosmetics. Considering this, this study aimed to screen bioactivities with cosmeceutical potential, namely, antioxidant, UV absorbance, anti-enzymatic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as photoprotection potential. Extractions with higher concentrations of ethanol resulted in extracts with higher antioxidant activities, while for the anti-enzymatic activity, high inhibition percentages were obtained for elastase and hyaluronidase with almost all extracts. Regarding the antimicrobial activity, all extracts showed to be active against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. Extracts produced with higher percentages of ethanol were more effective against E. coli and with lower percentages against the other two microorganisms. Several concentrations of each extract were found to be safe for fibroblasts, but no photoprotection capacity was observed. However, one of the aqueous extracts was responsible for reducing around 40% of the nitric oxide production on macrophages, showing its anti-inflammatory potential. This work highlights G. turuturu’s potential in the cosmeceutical field, contributing to the further development of natural formulations for skin protection.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Liver Transplantation in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Across Milan Criteria
Milan criteria are the most frequently used limits for liver transplantation (LT)
in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but our previous experience with
expanded criteria showed encouraging results. The aim of this study was to
investigate whether our expanded Clinica Universitaria de Navarra (CUN) criteria
(1 nodule up to 6 cm or 2-3 nodules up to 5 cm each) could be used to select
patients with HCC for LT. Eighty-five patients with HCC fulfilling CUN criteria
were included as candidates for LT. Survival of transplanted HCC patients was
compared with survival of patients without HCC (n = 180). After the exclusion of
2 patients with tumor seeding of the chest wall due to pre-LT tumor biopsy,
survival and recurrence rates were compared according to tumor staging.
Twenty-six out of 85 (30%) patients exceeded Milan criteria. Twelve patients had
tumor progression on the waiting list. Patients exceeding Milan criteria had a
higher dropout rate due to tumoral progression. One-, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year
survival rates of the 73 transplanted HCC patients were 86%, 74%, 70%, 61%, and
50%, respectively. Survival of patients with HCC was significantly lower than
that of patients without HCC, but by multivariate analysis, HCC was not
associated with lower survival. Tumor recurrence and survival rates were similar
for patients fulfilling Milan and CUN criteria. Pathological staging showed 55
patients within Milan criteria, 7 patients exceeding them but within CUN
criteria, and 9 patients exceeding CUN criteria. Tumor recurrence rates were 2/55
(4%), 0/7 (0%), and 4/9 (44%) in each of these groups, respectively. In
conclusion, following CUN criteria could increase the number of HCC patients who
could benefit from LT, without worsening the results. Because of the short number
of patients in this series, these data need external validation
Comparative analysis of MIS capacitance structures with high-k dielectrics under gamma, 16O and p Radiation
MIS capacitance structures, with Hafnium Oxide, Alumina and nanolaminate as dielectrics were studied under gamma photons Co, 25 MeV oxygen ions and 10 MeV protons radiation using capacitance-voltage (C-V) characterization. The main trend of the results shows that the nanolaminates stack presents the highest levels of hysteresis and stretch-out of the C-V curves, suggesting that interface layers between dielectrics could play a relevant role in the study of the radiation response.Fil: Quinteros, C. Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue from Local Pig Breeds
When compared to modern lean-type breeds, Portuguese local Alentejano (AL) and BĂsaro (BI) pig breeds present a high potential for subcutaneous and intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition which contributes for better meat quality. The aim of this work was to explore the genome function to better understand the underlying physiological mechanisms associated with body fat accretion. Dorsal subcutaneous fat samples were collected at slaughter from adult animals (n = 4 for each breed) with ~150 kg body weight. Total RNA was obtained and sequenced for transcriptome analysis using DESeq2. A total of 458 di erentially expressed (DE) genes (q-value < 0.05) were identified, with 263 overexpressed in AL and 195 in BI. Key genes involved in de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, elongation and desaturation were upregulated in AL such as ACLY, FASN, ME1, ELOVL6 and SCD. A functional enrichment analysis of the DE genes was performed using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Cholesterol synthesis is suggested to be higher in AL via SREBF2, SCAP and PPARG, while lipolytic activity may be more active in BI through GH and AMPK signalling. Increased signalling of CD40 together with the predicted activation of INSIG1 and INSIG2 in BI suggests that this breed is more sensitive to insulin whereas the AL is less sensitive like the Iberian breed
